How to Use
How to use the Starter Kit in your AeroGarden® Harvest2.0
The included Starter Kit provides you with the materials needed to plant your own seeds or root cuttings in your AeroGarden Harvest2.0. This guide will assist you in deciding what to plant and how to plant it, provide advice on starting cuttings and clones, and detail basic plant care in the AeroGarden.
Note: AeroGarden pre-seeded kits offer the benefit of years of research and testing, and our seeds are backed by a germination guarantee.* Planting with your own seeds or cuttings, however, can be a bit of an experiment. We hope that your efforts will be successful and that you enjoy the discovery process!
Selecting Seeds
Try plants that will not grow taller than the space allowed, or choose plants that can be easily pruned to stay within your model’s height restriction (such as basil). The maximum grow height of AeroGardens varies depending upon the model. Your AeroGarden Harvest2.0 maximum grow height is about 12” Tuberous plants, or root crops such as carrots, beets, potatoes or peanuts should not be planted in an AeroGarden unless you plan to transplant them soon after germination.
- Tomatoes are popular, but it is important to choose the right varieties to grow in your AeroGarden Harvest2.0. For best results, choose compact and determinate varieties (your seed pack should give this information). Never plant an indeterminate variety unless you plan to transplant it within 5 weeks.
- Compact miniature varieties work best in the AeroGarden.

How to use the Starter Kit in your AeroGarden® Harvest2.0
- STEP 1: Labeling Write the name of seeds or plant cuttings directly on Seed Pod Label(s) with permanent marker. Labels allow for easy identification of plants. They also block light, help prevent algae, and control moisture levels. Keep Seed Pod Labels on after sprouting.
- STEP 2: Attaching Label Adhere label to the baskets.
- STEP 3: Insert Seeds
- Insert your seeds into the Grow Sponge opening using fingertips or tweezers. Plant several seeds per Grow Sponge. For large seeds (e.g., pea, squash), cut opening 1/2″ deep with scissors (see photo) and insert 1–2 seeds.
- Insert Grow Sponge into Grow Basket. Use care not to dislodge seeds.
- STEP 4: Planting
- Insert Grow Pods into Grow Deck openings.
- Use cool water and fill to the indicator. Most tap water works great. If you have hard or softened water at home, using a 50/50 mix of distilled and tap water may give you better results.
- Make sure the Light Hood is at the lowest position on the Light Post.
Planting Date:
Tip: Plant whatever number of pods that make you happy, but always cover any unplanted holes with the included AeroGarden Plant Spacers to prevent algae growth.
Cuttings and Clones
“Cuttings” or “Clones” are the terms used to describe rooting a piece of one plant to create an identical clone of that plant. Many plants, such as tomatoes, are very easy to clone. Some woodier plants, such as rosemary or blueberry, require more effort and trial.
- Saturate Grow Sponge with water.
- Cut the Grow Sponge open lengthwise.
- Place cutting in Grow Sponge and close.
- Carefully push Grow Sponge (with cutting in place) through Seed Pod Label and into Grow Basket.
- Follow Step 4: PLANTING on the previous page of this guide.
- Make a shallow lengthwise cut, about halfway…
- …and place a single cutting inside the Grow Sponge opening
Tips:
- Choose cuttings from the freshest new growth of a plant.
- Choose cuttings that are short and small, with limited top growth.
- New cuttings like high levels of humidity; mist them daily and cover them with a clear plastic cup or container to hold in humidity.
- Try stripping some bark off the cuttings of woodier plants to stimulate rooting.
- Check cuttings regularly and remove any unhealthy (rotten or dried up) plants.
- Some cuttings may take weeks to show signs of root development.
- Your plants don’t have roots yet, so too much light and heat can hurt them. To ease their adjustment, turn the light hood off for the first 24-48 hours.
Garden Settings
Plant Food
- • Add Liquid Plant Food to the Bowl when you first plant your Seed Pod Kit and when the ‘Add Plant Food’ reminder starts to flash at you every 2 weeks.
- Lightly touch and hold the ‘Light On/Off’ button at the top of your LED light for a couple of seconds to turn the alert off and to reset the Plant Food Timer.
Follow directions on the Liquid Plant Food bottle for feeding amounts and top off the water level to the ‘Fill To Here’ line.
Lights
- Touch the ‘Light On/Off’ button to temporarily turn LED Grow Lights ON or OFF. This will not affect the timing of your light cycle and occasional use will not harm your plants. Once touched, the Light will stay ON/OFF until the next time you are set to go ON/OFF.
Set Lights ‘ON’ Time
- When you plug in your AeroGarden for the first time the Grow Light will come ON, and will continue to come ON at this time every day.
- It will turn OFF automatically 15 hours later.
- If you would like to change the time of day when the Light comes ON, follow these steps:
- Gently Touch and hold your finger over the ‘Light On/Off’ button for about 5 seconds and release when the small light (Add Plant Food alert) blinks once.
- Your Grow Light will now come ON at this time each day and will stay ON for 15 hours.
An Important Note About Lights:
- Your AeroGarden Harvest2.0 has a built-in timer for the Grow Light that automatically provides your plants with the perfect amount of “sunlight.” As long as your plants get this amount of light, it does not matter what time the lights are Off. You may find it most convenient to have the Light turn on in the morning and off at night, to match your personal schedule.
Watering
- Plants grown in the AeroGarden are designed to thrive with most municipal tap water. If your water is especially hard, improved results can be seen with distilled water or reverse osmosis water, but this is not needed in most cases.
- It’s okay to add water to the ‘Fill To Here’ line any time. For best growth, keep your garden topped off!
Good To Know: Your pump will be ON when your Grow Light is ON, and it will be OFF, when your Grow Light is OFF.
An Important Note About Lights:
Your AeroGarden has a Low Water shut off feature. If your reservoir runs empty, your pump will stop and your LED Grow Light will turn OFF. This will alert you that your AeroGarden needs water, and will help slow down your plants water intake needs for a short while. After you fill your reservoir with water, your LED Grow Light will turn back ON and continue its Light ON cycle/personal wake and sleep schedule.
Helpful Garden Tips
Light Height
- Keep the Grow Light 4-6″ over the plants. Your plants love all the light they can get. When growing different types of plants together in one AeroGarden®, expect different growth patterns, shapes & sizes.
- Basil is a classic example of a plant that sprouts within days and grows tall very quickly. If the Grow Light is raised just for the Basil, it will take over and the other plants will not thrive. When it comes to Basil, remember to prune early and often.
Different Grow Rates
- Seeds seem to have a mind of their own. While some sprout in a few days, others may take up to a month. Some plants grow fast, some grow slow, some grow tall, some short. Even the same variety of plants can grow differently. Each is unique!
Plants Per Pod
- With herbs, lettuce and flowers, let as many sprouts grow per pod as you like. This will lead to bigger harvests down the road.
Ho`wever, tomatoes and peppers grow best with just one plant per pod. With shears, carefully cut out smaller seedlings, leaving one healthy plant per pod.
Water Quality Matters
- Municipal tap water works well in most areas, but if you have really hard water or softened water, consider mixing bottled distilled water (50-50 at first) with your tap water for best results.
+ Add Fresh Water Often
- As plants mature they start to use more water. For best growth, keep water level topped off. You don’t need to wait for the Add Water Alert. A full water bowl is always better than empty.
Be Brave. Prune!
- Pruning does not hurt your plants, it helps them. `Pruning brings greater health and encourages dense, compact growth for bigger yields.
- Never prune more than 1/3 of your plant. Pruning roots is not recommended.
Rinse & Refill
- Rinse and refill your Water Bowl monthly with fresh cool water (every other time you add plant food). Empty the Water Bowl, refill with fresh cool water, and add recommended plant food.
Re-Planting AeroGarden
Let’s Re-Plant Your AeroGarden®!
Make sure you start with a clean and sanitized bowl. Sanitizing your AeroGarden between plantings cleans out the roots and residue that plants leave behind. This will help your new plants grow happy and healthy. Remove your pump filter and place the water bowl and grow deck ONLY in the top rack of your dishwasher and run in a regular cycle with normal dishwasher detergent. Find additional cleaning tips and instructions at aerogarden.com /ideas-and-inspiration
- STEP 1: Sanitize Your Garden
- STEP 2: Reset Your Plant Food Timer When your ‘Add Plant Food’ alert is OFF, gently touch and hold your finger over the ‘Light On/Off’ button for about 10 seconds. The ‘Add Plant Food’ alert light will blink 3 times to confirm your AeroGarden has been reset. All of your timers will be reset to start at this point and you will be ready to plant again.
- STEP 3: Set Your Light Hood to the Lowest Position
- STEP 4: Plant Your Seed Pod Kit
Tip: Little bugs can find their way to your garden by riding in on clothing, on other plants or through an open window or door. If you find some unwanted guests, spray your plants with water to wash them off. Make sure you spray UNDER the leaves, as bugs usually reside there. For more persistent pests, an insecticidal soap may help.
