Important Precautions

Warning: Possible Injury Or Death. This product is intended for use as an adjustable mattress platform that contours for resident/patient comfort with adjustable height for resident/patient and caregiver convenience. Use of this product in a manner for which it was not designed could result in unproven or unsafe configuration, potentially resulting in injury or death.

Warning: Possible Injury. Before adjusting bed, ensure that area under and near bed perimeter is free of people and obstructions. Failure to do so could result in injury or damage to the bed.

Warning: Possible Injury. Keep bed in lowest position except when providing care (bathing, clothing changes, etc.). Bed should be at lowest convenient height for entry or exit. Failure to do so could result in injury.

Warning: Possible Injury Or Death. Resident/patients may become entangled in pendant cord. Resident/patients with reduced mental acuity should not be allowed access to pendant. Unsupervised use of pendant could result in injury or death.

Warning: Possible Injury Or Death. Bed safe working load is 600 pounds. This is total weight counting resident/patient, mattress, bedding accessories and any other equipment or persons likely to be on bed. Do not exceed 600-pound safe working load. Exceeding the safe working load could result in property damage, injury or death.

Warning: Possible Injury Or Death. Do not roll bed over abrupt thresholds with resident/patient in bed. Bed is not designed for transporting resident/patient. Transporting resident/patient in the bed could result in injury or death.

Warning: Possible fire hazard when used with oxygen administrating equipment other than nasal, mask or ½ bed length tent type. Not for use with full bed length tent or hyperbaric oxygen chamber. Oxygen tent should not extend below mattress support platform. Lock hand control at foot of bed when using oxygen administering equipment.

Warning: Possible Shock Hazard. Unplug power cord from wall outlet before performing any maintenance, cleaning or service to the bed. Resident should be removed from bed prior to any service being performed on the equipment. Failure to do so could result in injury or death. Note: In case of unexpected movement, unplug bed from any outlet.

Warning: Possible Shock Hazard. Position the bed in a manner that allows ease of access to the power cord and wall outlet. Injury may result from improper routing of the power cord. Always follow the proper factory- installed routing configuration. Failure to do so could result in injury or death.

Warning: Possible Injury Or Death. Use a mattress that is properly sized to fit mattress deck, that will remain centered on mattress deck relative to State and Federal guidelines. Joerns Healthcare recommends the use of a mattress with minimum dimensions of 35 inches wide and 6 inches deep. Length should match mattress support platform. Use of an improperly fitted mattress could result in injury or death. If using the CareWide accessory or the bed is equipped with Care-Fit integrated width expansion, Joerns Healthcare recommends the use of a mattress with a minimum width of 39 inches for a 39 inch setting and 42 inches for 42 inch setting.

Warning: Possible Injury Or Death. If a resident/patient’s mental or physical condition could lead to resident/patient entrapment, the mattress support platform should be left in the flat position when unattended. Failure to do so could result in injury or death.

Warning: An optimal bed system assessment should be conducted on each resident by a qualified clinician or medical provider to ensure maximum safety of the resident. The assessment should be conducted within the context of, and in compliance with, the state and federal guidelines related to the use of restraints and bed system entrapment guidance, including the Clinical Guidance for the Assessment and Implementation of Side Rails published by the Hospital Bed Safety Workgroup of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Important Note: When using the mattress system, always ensure that the resident/patient is positioned properly within the confines of the bed. Do not let any extremities protrude over the side or between the bed assist devices when the mattress is being used.

Warning: Possible Injury Or Death. Use a properly sized mattress in order to minimize the gap between the side of mattress and assist device. This gap must be small enough to prevent resident/patient from getting his/her head or neck caught in this location. Make sure that raising or lowering bed, or contouring the sleep surface, does not create any hazardous gaps. Excessive gaps may result in injury or death.

Warning: Possible Injury Or Death. Locate mounting brackets for assist devices strictly according to instructions. Gap between head/foot panel and assist device must be small enough or large enough to prevent resident/patient from getting his/her head or neck caught in this location (see specific Assist Device Installation Instructions for more information). If multiple assist devices are used, position each so that gap between them is large enough for trunk and hips to pass through easily. Make sure raising or lowering bed, or contouring sleep surface does not create any hazardous gaps. Failure to do so could result in injury or death. Important Note: Powered air mattress surfaces may pose a risk of entrapment. Prior to use, ensure the therapeutic benefits outweigh the risk of entrapment

Warning: Possible Injury Or Death. Do not use an assist device if any openings within assist device body allow resident/patient to get his/her head or neck lodged within these openings. Use of assist devices with large openings may result in injury or death.

Warning: Possible Injury Or Death. Do not use any Joerns® assist device until you verify it is designed specifically for EasyCare® and it is locked in place. Failure to lock assist devices may result in injury or death.

Warning: Possible Injury Or Death. Do not use any replacement parts not manufactured, marketed or provided by Joerns Healthcare on any Joerns bed. Use of unapproved replacement parts may result in injury or death.

Warning: Possible Injury Or Death. If using accessories not manufactured, marketed or provided by Joerns Healthcare for Joerns beds, consult with the manufacturer for compatibility and limitations prior to use. Failure to do so may result in injury or death.

Warning: Possible Shock Hazard. If the bed power cord has a hospital- grade, 3-prong grounding plug, grounding reliability can only be achieved when equipment is connected to an equivalent receptacle marked hospital-grade.

Warning: Possible Injury. Sitting on or sliding over the Mattress Side Stop can cause skin injury if the bed mattress compresses to less than 1.5 inches under user’s weight.

Warning: Possible Injury. Risk of entanglement or injury may occur if mattress used with Mattress Side Stop does not fill the entire width between stops or which compresses to less than 1.5 inches under user’s weight.

Warning: Possible Injury or Death. NEVER permit more than (1) person in /on the bed at any time. NEVER exceed the weight capacity of this bed. The weight capacity of this bed is 600 lbs (272 kg) including accessories and options (not all accessories and options may be used at the same time). Subtract residents weight from beds capacity 600 lbs (272 kg) to determine allowable weight for mattress, bed panels, accessories, and optional equipment. See Accessories Section for accessory weights.

Warning: Possible Injury or Death. Floor locks increase bed stability and resident safety. Make sure the bed is in a locked position with respect to the floor by ensuring the casters are off the floor or if equipped, the Care-Lock is in the locked position before attempting any resident transfers. Failure to do so could result in injury or death.

Warning: Possible Injury. Use caution when activating the Care-Lock function. This feature was designed to be activated by your foot. Using your hand to activate the CareLock system could result in injury.

Caution: In the absence of line voltage, all bed adjustments can be achieved via an externally available backup battery (Joerns P/N N111).

Caution: Radio transmitting equipment, cellular phones, or similar electronic devices, used in proximity of bed, may affect bed performance.
Note: Electromagnetic disturbances may contribute to the improper operation of medical devices. In the case of a bed, it may affect the performance of the bed movement when a function is selected. Do not place the bed in a location that is known to have high electromagnetic fields.

Warning: Use of this equipment adjacent to or stacked with other equipment should be avoided because it could result in improper operation. If such use is necessary, this equipment and the other equipment should be observed to verify that they are operating normally.

Warning: Use of accessories, transducers, and cables other than those specified or provided by the manufacturer of this equipment could result in increased electromagnetic emissions or decreased electromagnetic immunity of this equipment and result in improper operation.

Warning: Portable RF communications equipment (including peripherals such as antenna cables and external antennas) should be used no closer than 30 cm (12 inches) to any part of the bed, including cables specified by the manufacturer. Otherwise, degradation of the performance of this equipment could result.

Note: The EMISSIONS characteristics of this equipment make it suitable for use in industrial areas and hospitals (CISPR 11 class A). If it is used in a residential environment (for which CISPR 11 class B is normally required) this equipment might not offer adequate protection to radiofrequency communication services. The user might need to take mitigation measures, such as relocating or re-orienting the equipment.

Caution: This device complies with EMC requirements of IEC 60601-1-2. Radio transmitting equipment, cellular phones or similar electronic devices, used in proximity of bed, may affect bed performance.

Caution: Particular precaution must be considered during exposure to strong emission sources such as High Frequency surgical equipment and similar devices. Do not route High Frequency cables on or near device. If in doubt, contact a qualified technician.

Caution: The Joerns’ EasyCare bed is intended for use within institutional healthcare environments 2, 3 and 5 (ie: skilled nursing, transitional care, rehabilitational care, assisted living). Joerns Healthcare recommends compliance to the regulations and guidelines specified to your locality.

Joerns assist devices are designed to be used with specific Joerns bed frames. Once mounted on the appropriate bed frame, assist devices become an integral part of the Joerns bed system. As such, these mounted assist devices, meet the IEC 60601-2-52 Bed Standard, within normal use conditions, of the appropriate bed to which they are mounted.

Assemble, install, utilize, and maintain Joerns Assist Devices as described in their accompanying Joerns User/ Service Manual, which also lists the bed type or model with which these devices may be used.

Bed System Entrapment Information

In April 1999, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in partnership with representatives from the hospital and post-acute bed industry, including Joerns Healthcare, national healthcare organizations, resident advocacy groups, and other federal agencies formed the Hospital Bed Safety Workgroup (HBSW). The workgroup’s goal is to improve the safety of bed frames for patients and residents in all health care settings who are most vulnerable to the risk of entrapment. The efforts of the FDA and the HBSW culminated in the FDA’s release of recommended guidelines intended to reduce the risk of entrapment, including dimensional limits for critical gaps and spaces between bed system components and clinical guidance for assessment and implementation of bed side rails in various health care settings.

Entrapment zones involve the relationship of bed components often directly assembled by the healthcare facility rather than the manufacturer. Therefore, compliance is the responsibility of the facility.

Head Panel Installation:

  1. Locate the head panel; the head panel has a label on the back.

  2. Lay panel on a flat soft surface, face down, with the threaded t-nuts facing away from the bed occupant.

  3. Head panel brackets have rubber bumpers mounted on them.

  4. The panel brackets are right-left oriented. Items welded to the side of the panel mounting tube should be placed to the inside (Figure 1). Install head panel brackets with four screws provided. Do not tighten at this time.

  5. Insert the brackets into the bed frame sockets (Figure 2); maintain support of the bed panel. Insert the safety pins on each side and latch them (Figure 3).

  6. Press the mounting bracket against the bed frame and tighten the four panel mounting screws; right and left side.

Foot Panel Installation:

  1. Locate the foot panel; the foot panel does not have a label on the back.

  2. Lay panel on a flat soft surface, face down, with the threaded t-nuts facing towards the bed occupant.

  3. The panel brackets are right-left oriented. Items welded to the side of the panel mounting tube should be placed to the inside (Figure 4). Install foot panel brackets with four screws provided. Do not tighten at this time.

  4. Insert the brackets into the bed sockets (Figure 5); maintain support of the bed panel. Insert the safety pins on each side and latch them (Figure   6).

  5. Press the mounting bracket against the bed frame and tighten the four panel mounting screws; right and left side.

Caution: Carefully remove the packaging straps (orange zip ties) before attempting to operate the bed.

  1. Place the baseboard bumper as shown (Figure 7).

  2. Tap into place with a rubber mallet or press firmly with the sole of your shoe until it locks into place as shown (Figure 8).

The bed will ship with the standard bumper installed.

Caution: Facility Damage. The bed will ship with a wall bumper that provides clearance from the wall for the Gravity Assist bed position; the bed frame is tilted head down approximately 4-5° to assist in repositioning a patient back towards the head of the bed with minimal effort. If the Trendelenburg position is desired, ~12° bed frame head down, then a wall bumper is available for order, 11012608AL, to best protect the facility walls from inadvertent damage.

  1. Remove the shorter bumper by tapping the tangs on either side of the leg with a rubber mallet.
  2. Place the 12° baseboard bumper, 11012608AL, available for order.
  3. Tap into place with a rubber mallet or press firmly with the sole of your shoe until it locks into place.

Installation of Mattress Stop

Warning: Possible Injury. Sitting on, or sliding over, mattress side stop, can cause injury to the skin when used with mattress that compresses to less than 1.5 inches under load.

Warning: Possible Injury. Make sure mattress fills the entire width between side stops. Failure to do so could result in injury.

Mattress Stops are designed to help keep the mattress from sliding laterally and longitudinally on the mattress support platform.

Installation Steps
Required tool – #2 Phillips screwdriver

  1. Locate the screws at each corner of the inside tube at the foot end of the mattress support platform; one per side (Figure 9).

  2. Remove the screws using the #2 Phillips screwdriver; do not discard the screws.

  3. Position and insert the mattress stops in the holes provided (Figure 10). Reinstall the screws removed in step 2.

  4. Repeat at each corner of the head end of the mattress support platform.

IV Sockets

Joerns® EasyCare® bed has four IV sockets as standard equipment. There are two sockets at head end of bed and two at foot end (Figure 11 and Figure 12). The IV sockets are compatible with Joerns IV poles and most ½” IV poles.

Installation of Staff Control Panel (Optional)

  1. Mount the foot panel on the bed as indicated in previous instructions.

  2. Align and insert the staff control cable plug into the cable jack, located on the bed (Figure 13).

  3. Ensure that the cable plug is fully inserted into the cable jack.

  4. To secure tighten the union nut on both cables (Figure 14).

Operation

The pendant allows the patient / resident to operate the bed. Lockouts will light up if a function has been locked out by the caregiver.

Your EasyCare bed comes standard with the pendant shown in Figure 19. The pendant plugs into a jack under either side of the seat pan.

  1. Unscrew the union nut (Figure 15) and insert the cable plug, with the arrow facing up into jack (Figure 16).

  2. Ensure that the cable plug is fully inserted into the jack (Figure 17).

  3. Screw on the union nut from the cable to secure cable (Figure 18).

  4. The pendant has raised, high-contrast buttons and graphics.

One-Touch Button Positioning

Back Section 30° / 45° Pause: Press and hold the back raise or lower button to reposition as normal. The back section will pause at 30° and 45°. Continue to press the button to reposition as needed.

Hi / Low Pause: Press and hold the bed Hi / Low button, when the bed reaches the AutoTransfer Height in either direction the bed will pause. Continue to press or press again to reposition as needed. To change to a tailored transfer height, use the programmable AutoTransfer Height function on staff control.

Comfort Chair: Press and hold to raise the knee, tilt the bed, and raise the back section for a reclining position. To exit Comfort Chair, use AutoTransfer Height.

AutoTransfer Height: Press and hold to level the bed, flatten the head and knee, and lower to a transfer height. To change to a patient-specific transfer height, use the programmable AutoTransfer Height function on staff control.

Staff Control Panel Operation (Optional) (Figure 20)

The staff control panel allows the caregivers to operate the bed from the foot panel without walking to the bedside. The caregiver can also individually lock out all functions, both pendant and staff control.

  1. To lock out a function, press and hold the “Lock” graphic on the panel and push the function to lock out. Illuminated amber LED indicates that the function is now locked out on both pendant and staff control.
  2. To unlock a function, press and hold the “Lock” graphic on the panel and push the function to unlock. Amber LED is no longer illuminated, signaling that the function is now operable on both pendant and staff control.

Programmable AutoTransfer Height
(Staff control function only, Figure 20)

To change the pre-set transfer height:
Place bed at new desired transfer height for the specific patient using the up or down buttons. Simultaneously press and hold “AutoTransfer Height” + “Comfort Chair” buttons for five (5) seconds. The lockout LED between the two buttons will blink once, select “raise” bed button to confirm new transfer height within ten (10) seconds. Bed hi-low lockout LED will blink twice to confirm new transfer height setting.

To change back to the default pre-set transfer height:
Simultaneously press and hold the “AutoTransfer Height” + “Comfort Chair” buttons for five (5) seconds. The lockout LED between the two buttons will blink once, within ten (10) seconds select the “lower” bed button to confirm the default pre-set transfer height is desired. Bed hi-low lockout LED will blink once to confirm the pre-set default transfer height has been enabled.

Setting 12 Degree Trendelenburg Mode
(Staff control function only, Figure 20)

The bed will ship set to 4° Gravity Assist mode. This mode limits the head down angle to 4°. The bed angle setting can be changed to 12° Trendelenburg mode to enable Trendelenburg functionality.

  1. Install staff control panel as described previously.

  2. Simultaneously, press and hold Trendelenburg and reverse Trendelenburg (Figure 20 ) buttons for 5 seconds on Staff Control Panel.

  3. Trendelenburg/Reverse Trendelenburg lock icon will begin flashing indicating that the system is ready for bed angle selection.

  4. Press bed up (Figure 20 ) button to select full 12° Trendelenburg mode.

  5. Bed hi-low lockout icon will flash twice confirming the bed angle setting is set to 12° Trendelenburg mode.
    Caution: Facility Damage. If the Trendelenburg position is desired, ~12° bed frame head down, then a wall bumper is available for order, 11012608AL, to best protect the facility walls from inadvertent damage.

  6. To return bed to 4° Gravity Assist, repeat steps 2 and 3, then press bed down (Figure 20). Bed hi-low lock icon will blink once confirming the system is now in 4° Gravity Assist mode. Install correct baseboard bumper.

  1. To keep the bed from rolling when in the lowest position, press down on the locking lever to lock casters (Figure 21).

Care-Lock Feature (Optional)

The bed features a rolling base that allows it to be rolled or locked at any bed height.

To stop motion of the bed, enable the Care-Lock feature:

  1. Engage the steering locks, located on the dual wheel casters at the head of the bed (Figure 22).

  2. Engage the Care-Lock at the foot end of the bed by pressing down on the red or right side pedal (Figure 23)

To resume bed movement, disable the Care-Lock feature:

  1. Disengage by pressing down on the green or left pedal (Figure 24). The steering locks may remain in place for desired maneuverability.
    Operation

Warning: Possible Injury. Before leaving the bed unattended, check that the Care-Lock feature is in the locked position. Never leave an unlocked bed unattended.

Warning: Possible Injury. Check that the Care-Lock feature is in the locked position before allowing the resident to enter or exit the bed.

For best practices, the Care-Lock feature should be locked at all times, except when the bed is being moved.

Care-Fit Integrated Width Expansion (optional)

The EasyCare Care-Fit Integrated Width Expansion option allows the mattress support platform (MSP) to be set at a bed width of 35″, 39″, or 42″. If your Joerns bed has been configured with the Care-Fit option the following steps will provide adequate instruction on the operation of this feature.

  1. If applicable, remove the sleep surface.

  2. Locate the width expansion spring pin with tether on any of the six MSP extensions (Figure 25).

  3. Pull the tether in the direction towards the floor to allow the MSP extension to move freely.

  4. Slide the MSP extension to the desired width. Note the width indicator found on the head and foot extensions (Figure 26 and Figure 27).

  5. Release the tether to engage the detent (Figure 25).

  6. Repeat the above steps on the remaining MSP extensions.

Warning : Possible Injury Or Death. Use a mattress that is properly sized to fit mattress deck, that will remain centered on mattress deck relative to State and Federal guidelines. Joerns Healthcare recommends the use of a mattress with minimum dimensions of 35 inches wide and 6 inches deep. Length should match mattress support platform. Use of an improperly fitted mattress could result in injury or death. If using add-on CareWide or the bed is equipped with Care-Fit, Joerns Healthcare recommends the use of a mattress with a minimum width of 39 inches for a 39 inch setting and 42 inches for 42 inch setting.

Warning: Possible Injury or Death. Do not apply any width expansion accessory kit to a Joerns bed equipped with the Care-Fit integrated width expansion feature. Failure to comply may cause the bed to become unstable, leading to a possible injury or equipment failure.

Warning: Possible Injury. Ensure side assist fastener is hanging down when not in use (Figure 28). Ensure the side assist fastener is not trapped and positioned in a manner that the fastener would not come into contact with exposed skin.

EasyLift Leg Positioner Operation

  1. To raise: The knee should be in a raised position prior to adjusting the leg positioner. Grasp the bed’s foot deck and raise to the desired position (Figure 29).

  2. To lower: Grasp the foot end of the bed’s deck and raise ½-inch to ¾-inch above present notch, then lower gently; or, grasp the foot end of the bed deck, raise to the highest position, and lower gently.

  3. Lower the knee section with the pendant or staff control. Note: The EasyLift should be lowered before the knee section.

Caution: Be careful not to damage power cord when moving or placing bed. After placing bed in service, monitor power cord positioning carefully to prevent damage as you fully op rate all bed functions.

Caution: When power cord is not plugged into a wall outlet, place it on sleep surface to prevent it from contacting floor. This will help prevent cord damage when transporting bed.

Caution: If a power cord is damaged, remove bed from service until repairs are performed.

Servicing

Warning: Never perform maintenance with a resident/ patient on or near the device. Only qualified personnel should attempt to perform maintenance on this bed. Failure to properly follow all warnings and instructions may result in personal injury or damage to the device. Failure to properly care for the device may decrease the device life and increase the need for maintenance.

Power Cord and Grounding Connectors

Inspection of power cord and grounding connectors (if present) should be conducted on a yearly basis to ensure efficient bed operation.

  1. Check the power cord to make sure it has not been damaged. If the power cord needs replacement due to damage, remove the bed from use/service until the power cord has been replaced.
  2. Check the grounding connectors (if present) to ensure they remain intact and are securely fastened to their intended connection point.

Warning: Possible Shock Hazard. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet before performing any maintenance/service to the control box.

Warning: Possible High Temperature. Prior to servicing any electrical component ensure the component has cooled to room temperature.

To Remove Control Box

  1. Plugs and outlets are numbered so they can be easily reinstalled later (See Actuator And Control Box Identification).

  2. Unplug from wall outlet.

  3. Elevate the knee section of the sleep deck to ease the removal of the control box.

  4. Open the cable cover from the control box using the small flat screwdriver to pry both locking tabs free at both ends (Figure 32). Unplug the actuator cables and the pendant or staff control cable.

  5. Remove the main power cord by pressing in the red tabs on both sides of the housing with the small flat screwdriver and pulling the plug out of the housing (Figure 33).

  6. If installed remove battery patch cable from control box

  7. Using the small flat screwdriver, detach the control box from mounting bracket connected to the Hi-Lo actuator by pressing the internal tab gently inwards (Figure 34).

  8. Now the control box can be separated from the actuator by sliding it off the actuator’s mounting bracket connected to the Hi-Lo actuator housing (Figure 35).

  9. To replace the control box, reverse these instructions.

To Remove Actuator

Recommended Tools: Screwdriver, Hammer, Masking Tape, Zip Ties

  1. Identify the actuator to be replaced.
  2. Tip the bed on its side to replace high/low actuator(s).
  3. Unplug the actuator cord.
  4. The actuator is held in place by two pins. Use a screwdriver to remove the lock ring on each pin.
  5. Slide the pins out of holes. If necessary, use the hammer to tap out the pins.
  6. You may now replace the actuator(s).
  7. To reassemble the bed, reverse the previous steps, making note of the following two important items:
    • Assemble the pin and lock rings as originally installed.
    • Zip-ties should be replaced, with cords returned to their original position and routing direction to the control box.

To Remove AC Power Cable

  1. Raise the bed so that there is about 27 inches of clearance between the floor and the mattress support platform of bed.

  2. Unplug the power cable from the outlet.

  3. Cut the zip-ties that hold the power cable to the frame. Tape the remaining cables in their original position. It is very important to keep the actuator cables routed along the frame in their original factory-installed positions. If this step is not followed, damage to cables or electric shock may result.

  4. Detach the ground wire from the bed frame if equipped.
    Warning: Possible Shock Hazard. Injury may result from improper power cable routing. Always follow proper factory-installed routing configuration. Be sure to check condition of the power cable on a regular basis. Do not use damaged or frayed power cables.

  5. Using a small screwdriver, alternately depress the small red latch tabs above and below AC receptacle on the control box. Simultaneously, pull gently outward on the power cable where it connects to the control box, until the plug comes out.

  6. Plug the replacement cable into the control box until it latches. Attach the ground wire to the bed frame.

  7. Re-route the power cable along the frame in the same position as the original routing.

  8. Replace zip-ties along with cables in their original position and routing to the control box. If this step is not followed, damage to the cables or electric shock may result.

Troubleshooting

Any loss of electrical function should be investigated with the following steps:

  5. If these steps fail to resolve the problem, call Technical Support at 800-826-0270.

All lockout indicators flashing|

  1. Unplug bed for 60 seconds and plug back in.
  2. Push and hold Hi-Lo up and down on staff control or pendant simultaneously until flashing stops (No more than 15 seconds).
  3. If only the back or hi-low lockout LED now flashes, the specific function needs to be fully lowered or raised for a position re-sync.
  4. If these steps fail to resolve the problem, call Technical Support at 800-826-0270.

Hi-Low lockout indicator flashing|

  1. Thermal overload condition. This should self correct in 2 minutes or less. Do not surpass 10% duty cycle (2 min on/ 18 min off).
  2. If these steps fail to resolve the problem, call Technical Support at 800-826-0270.

Back lockout indicator flashing|

  1. The back sleep deck needs to be fully lowered or raised for a position re-sync. When lowered ensure the actuator has stopped moving to confirm fully lowered position has been attained.
  2. If these steps fail to resolve the problem, call Technical Support at 800-826-0270.

Knee Lockout indicator flashes when attempting articulation|

  1. Bed is in a reverse Trendelenburg or comfort chair position, level bed (Figure 18).
  2. Lower or raise Hi-Low to end of travel

Note: Electrical damage can occur if a non-approved pendant is connected to the electrical system.

Maintenance

Maintenance/Inspection Information:

Visually inspect the bed and accessories for broken welds or cracks and check for loose hardware on a monthly basis.

If any broken welds or cracks are found, remove bed from service immediately and replace affected part(s). If necessary, contact Technical Support, 800-826-0270, for assistance. Tighten any loose hardware.

Preventative Maintenance

To ensure maximum life of your product, follow all warnings and cautions in the User Manual and maintain your bed with care, as outlined below. The maintenance required will be dictated by your bed’s usage and care – a thorough inspection should be conducted monthly.

To Maximize Service Life

  1. Keep the bed clean.

  2. Observe bed operation and report any discrepancies or problems to Joerns Healthcare Technical Support at 800.826.0270

  3. After initial week of use, check all threaded fasteners for looseness, and make sure all pins are in their normal location and fastened securely. Check monthly for loose bolts, nuts, pins and other retaining hardware. Tighten any loose hardware, and contact Joerns Healthcare to order any appropriate service parts.

  4. Make sure each inspection includes the underside of the bed frame and mattress support platform.

  5. Visually inspect the bed frame and accessories for any cracking, bending, or hole enlargement. If found, contact Joerns Technical Support at 800.826.0270, remove the bed from service immediately, and replace the affected parts.

  6. Check wiring for proper connections and damage (fraying, kinking, or deterioration). Report any damage to Joerns Technical Support at 800.826.0270

  7. Check actuators for correct mounting at attachment points and ensure all related pins are mounted securely and properly to the bed frame. Actuators are not serviceable, but are replaceable if required.

  8. Lubricate pivot point, pins and bolts as required. The recommended lubricant is Joerns-approved grease #12500013, available from Joerns Technical Support at 800.826.0270.
    Caution: Avoid using liquid lubricants to avoid causing a slip hazard.

  9. Properly stow pendant. Place pendant in pendant holder right side up, or use hook to avoid excessive bending of cable. Avoid dropping or stretching pendant during use to maximize service life.

If any discrepancies are noted during inspection, they must be corrected before continuing bed frame use. Major service and repairs must be performed by authorized Joerns Healthcare Technical Support, which you may contact at 800.826.0270.

End of Life Disposal

  • Many components of this product may be recycled.
  • Please dispose of non-recyclable items properly.

To prevent possible harm to the environment or human health from uncontrolled waste disposal, recycle it responsibly to promote the sustainable reuse of material resources.

Cleaning

Caution: Possible damage to electrical parts, and/or shock hazard.
Warning: Possible Injury or Burns. Do not use flammable liquids or solvents to clean the bed, its components, or surfaces placed on top of it.

  1. Clean all the electrical components (actuators, control box, pendant and cords) on your Joerns® bed with damp, well-wrung out cloth. Excess water in or on electrical parts, could damage these components. Do not submerge the pendant in liquid.
  2. Your Joerns bed features a durable, baked-on epoxy finish that is easily cleaned with a mild solution of antiseptic cleaner and warm water. Read and follow all label instructions on your cleaning products.
  3. Wood veneer surfaces should be maintained by cleaning with furniture cleaner or polish.

Trapeze And Trapeze Adapter

Warning: Possible Injury Or Death. Improper installation of the Trapeze Adapter could alter or dislodge the head panel position, increasing the risk of injury or suffocation.

  5. Adjustment and use of a Trapeze should be in accordance with instructions from a healthcare professional (doctor or therapist).

  1. Length Extender is designed to extend bed deck approximately four inches to allow using 84-inch mattress on 80-inch mattress support platform or 80-inch mattress on 76-inch mattress support platform.   3. It is important to operate all bed functions through their entire ranges to ensure that items attached to the Holder have proper clearance and are not pinched or caught.

  5. Many items that attach to the Holder are gravity fed and must be below bed user to function. Joerns Healthcare Warranty Program for Joerns® EasyCare® Bed, Model ECS

Joerns EasyCare bed is guaranteed for a period of four years from the date of delivery, against defects in materials and workmanship, under normal use and service.

This four-year warranty includes all mechanical and electrical components

Steel structural components on beds are covered under warranty for a period of 15 years from the date of delivery

Welds are covered under warranty for the lifetime 1 of the product.

Damage caused by use in unsuitable environmental conditions, abuse or failure to maintain the product in accordance with user and service instructions is not covered.

Any alteration, modification, or repair unless performed by, or authorized in writing by, Joerns Healthcare, will void this warranty.

Parts

Joerns beds contain various parts that wear from normal use. These parts, such as DC batteries or pendants, are not covered under the four-year warranty but are covered for 90 days after date of delivery.

Joerns Healthcare’s obligation under this warranty is limited to supplying replacement parts, servicing or replacing, at its option, any product which is found by Joerns Healthcare to be defective.

Warranty replacement parts are covered by the terms of this warranty until the product’s original four-year warranty period expires.

When requested by Joerns Healthcare, parts must be returned for inspection at the customer’s expense. Credit will be issued only after inspection.

Service

Most service requests can be handled by the facility Maintenance Department with assistance from the Joerns Healthcare Product Service Department.

Most parts requested can be shipped next day air at the customer’s expense.

Should a technician be required, one will be provided by Joerns Healthcare, at our discretion. Only the Joerns Healthcare Product Service Department can dispatch authorized technicians.

This warranty is extended to the original purchaser of the equipment.

Weld lifetime defined as 20 years.
