Operating the compass

  1. Method 1 (with illustration):

  2. Keep the compass level and align the destination, arrow on the baseplate, and observer in line.

  3. Keep the baseplate still and align the arrow on the scale dial with the pointer to set the direction.

  4. Align the arrow on the dial with the pointer and follow the indicated direction on the baseplate to reach your destination.

  5. Method 2 (with illustration):

  6. Align compass edge with travel route on map, ensuring forward arrow points to destination.

  7. Rotate the compass housing, aligning “N” on the dial with the map’s north. Check if the compass’s north/south line is parallel to the map’s meridian.

  8. Hold the compass flat and turn until the red needle aligns with “N” on the dial (matching the red needle with the red north arrow). The forward arrow now points to your destination.Look straight ahead and choose a visible landmark on land as a reference point. Walk towards it. Repeat the above steps until you reach your destination.

Magnetic Declination and Correction

Magnetic declination refers to the deviation between True North (map meridian) and Magnetic North (red end of compass needle). It is displayed on a map to indicate the magnitude and direction of the deviation. For example, a 20-degree eastward magnetic declination can be compensated for by:

If your compass has a declination scale, align the red end of the needle with 20.Edecl. The forward arrow will show the correct direction (check the specific declination for your area online).-

Compass Design Instructions

  1. Liquid-Filled Dial: Internal damping oil reduces wear, ensuring smoother and more precise needle rotation. It enhances the product’s appearance, but it may slightly slow down the speed at which the needle aligns.

  2. Air-Filled Dial: The air interior causes significant needle oscillation and slower settling. Without damping oil, the needle’s accuracy is compromised, leading to a shorter lifespan.

Attention

  1. The luminous dial must be illuminated by sunlight or fluorescent light to store energy and emit light at night.
  2. Hold the compass horizontally; it cannot be used properly when the pointer tilts at a large angle.
  3. When using or storing the compass, keep it away from iron products and electrical appliances. Otherwise, it may not work correctly.
  4. When observing the direction on a desktop, pay attention to whether an iron frame under the table may affect the compass.
  5. For routine maintenance, use a soft cloth to wipe the compass gently; do not use alcohol.
  6. Store the compass in a cool and ventilated place; do not expose it to high temperatures or subject it to impact. Otherwise, there may be oil leakage.
