ADAM SubP Studio Subwoofer
Introduction
ADAM Studio Monitors are built to a maximum in reproduction quality and perfection. To enjoy the capabilities of your new speakers please read the following hints and considerations, as the positioning and the acoustical properties of the control room often play a bigger role than you might think.
General Recommendations For The Set Up
- The speakers should be positioned on firm ground or a stand as vibrating parts of nearby objects can mask the sound.
- It is recommended to position the subwoofer between the front speakers, if possible, with a minimum distance of 20 cm to the back wall.
- Avoid positioning the subwoofer in a corner. Due to a resulting physical peak in the frequency response there will always be a tendency for resonances and boominess.
Transportation
If you have to send your speaker to any other location, it is of vital interest to have the original packaging materials as experience shows that it is very difficult to avoid damages without these. We will not be responsible for damages due to improper packaging.
Have fun …
We very much hope that you enjoy your new subwoofer and its unigue sonic
capabilities. If there are questions please do not hesitate to contact us – we
will be happy to advise you.
The ADAM people.
Controls On The Backside
Level
Input Sensitivity: ± 10 dB relative to 775 mV input voltage when used via the symmetrical XLR input or relative to 250 mV input when used via the asymmetrical Cinch (RCA) input.
Choice Of The Crossover Frequencies
As the properties of the satellites you will be using are unknown for us, and
as room size and the positioning within the room is not known either, you can
tune the cutoff frequency of the woofer and the satellites individually.
We recommend to start with the controls in the vertical position. Normally it
is soundwise superior to have a dip in the crossover frequency area rather
than a peak. For example, if your satellites work from 100 Hz on, you should
choose a 100 Hz crossover for the satellites and a 80 Hz cut off for the
woofer. Thus unwanted overemphasizing of the crossover region is avoided.
Crossover Subwoofer
The upper frequency limit of the subwoofer can be varied between 50 Hz and 150 Hz. For sound reasons we use variable Linkwitz Riley filters, 4th order, that promise the best integration between the woofer and the satellites. To realize these filters it will be necessary to turn 8 potentiometers around at a time, so you will need to put forth a small effort to make your settings. For the best results, musically speaking, we consider this to be adequate.
Crossover Satellite
The low frequency response of the satellite speakers also can be changed between 50 Hz and 150 Hz. Variable Linkwitz Riley filters are used here as well.
Phase Switch
With the Phase switch you can alter the phase of the SubP relative to the
satellites.
Practically, this means you can change the polarity of the bass unit.
Depending on the distance between woofer and satellites 0° or 180° may be the
better position. There is no “right” or “wrong” position, you have to find out
for yourself what sounds more exact and more homogenous in the low end.
Final Recommendation
After changing the set up a few times we recommend to prove the position of the controls again. In most cases, once the excitement of the new bottom end has settled, you may prefer a solution with less bass level.
