Introduction

Dear customer,
Thank you for choosing an ADAM Audio monitor of the F-Series. ADAM loudspeakers are built for maximum quality reproduction and audio perfection. With the F-series you have selected a precise, high-resolution speaker system that allows you to both evaluate and enjoy audio recordings. This monitor meets highest expectations in sound quality and craftsmanship.
This manual is intended to provide you with information about your new ADAMs. It contains important information regarding safety, setting up, handling, and warranty. We suggest that you read these sections carefully to ensure easy set up and prevent potential problems.
Our F-series nearfield monitors are perfectly suitable for a wide variety of stereo and multi-channel professional applications including small control rooms, desktops, mobile facilities and postproduction edit bays as well as connection to your favourite mp3-players and gaming consoles … in other words, in any situation where a combination of no-compromise sound reproduction and a small footprint is required.
Each loudspeaker of the F-Series consists of a two-way ported active system that uses ADAM’s proprietary X-ART folded ribbon tweeter ensuring full compatibility with the latest expanded high frequency resolution media formats along with a bass/midrange cone driver. There is an individual power amp for each driver with continuous output. The amplifiers of the F5 and F7 models have been optimized for output impedance profiles that are best suited for the associated drivers.
All models of the F-Range are equipped with a signal sensing circuitry. In order to cut power consumption to a minimum when not actually in use this circuitry switches the device into a standby mode when no signal is present at any input for a time longer than approx. 20mins. The F7 and F5 models have a built-in thermal protection that will mute the output signals in case internal and back panel temperatures should exceed safe limits.
If you have any questions about this or any other of our products, please don’t hesitate to contact us – our support team (support@adam- audio.de) will be happy to assist you in any matter. Quick Start / Connections

Important Information for set up

After having unpacked your loudspeakers, please allow the system to acclimate to the temperature of the room for approximately an hour.
It is important to ensure the speakers sit firmly on a solid surface!
We recommend that you retain the original packaging, as it is the best way to guarantee safe transportation should the need to do so arise.
Please note that the loudspeakers will take some break-in time to achieve optimum sonic performance.

Connecting the F5 / F7 speakers

a) Before connecting the loudspeakers to your audio components and the power source make sure that both the loudspeakers and your audio source are switched off and set the level controls fully counterclockwise.
b) Connect your sound source or mixing console to the speakers. Use either the RCA (unbalanced), XLR (balanced) or 1/4” TRS (balanced/unbalanced) connectors. In most professional applications XLR/TRS will be the typical choice, while RCA is more common in HiFi applications. Each one of the two loudspeakers has to be connected to one channel of the sound source. Both RCA and XLR/TRS inputs have the same sensitivity.

Please note:
On the F5/F7 the RCA input takes precedence over the XLR/TRS input. Whenever a cable is plugged into the RCA input, any signal from the XLR/TRS Input is cut off (but still used for signal sensing of the Standby Mode). Therefore, best practice is to connect only one single cable to the input you are actually using.

c) Check if the mains voltage selector of the product matches your local mains voltage range you use. If this is not the case do not connect the loudspeakers to a power source! Please contact your local dealer or national distributor. Use the included power cables to connect the loudspeaker to the AC sockets.
d) Make sure that the line out level (volume) of your stereo is either at a low level or all the way off. Then, switch on your audio system.

e) On the rear panel of the loudspeakers, set the volume at low level and switch on the mains switch and wait for about 5 secs. The loudspeaker is now in Standby Mode and armed to automatically switch into Operating Mode as soon a signal is detected at any of the inputs.
f) Turn on your source of music and adjust the volume slowly and carefully until the loudspeakers switch from Standby into Operating Mode, first using the volume control of your source. If your audio level is still too low, turn up the speaker’s volume control.

Please note:
After inital mains power-up (via the mains switch) and after a switch-off into Standby Mode, the signal detector will need about 5 sec. Even with a signal present, the speaker will not immediately switch back on into Operating Mode.

At the front of the F5 and F7 models you will find two LEDs next to the ADAM logo that indicate the following conditions:

GREEN:
Operation Mode, main power is present and speaker is active.

DIM RED:
Standby Mode, meaning the speaker has switched to low power mode with automatic signal sensing.

BRIGHT RED + GREEN LED:
Overtemperature condition, the speaker stops putting out sound and will wait some minutes until it cools down to resume operation. The thermal protection will nominally never engage in normal use but may engage when using high output levels over extended periods of time, notably together with high room temperatures and high mains voltages.

Speaker Placement

Please make sure that there are no obstacles in the way from the monitor to your ears. You should be able to see the speakers completely.

Vertical set up

The F-series has been designed for a vertical set up. The speakers must be positioned on a solid surface or a stand. Please note that vibrating parts of nearby objects can mask the sound.

Horizontal set up

If you choose to use your speakers in horizontal position as indicated below, please make sure that the set up is mirrored/ symmetrical, i.e. that the tweeters both face either the outwards or inwards. This is crucial for a precise stereo signal.

Tweeter at the height of ears

The Tweeter should be positioned approximately at the height of your ears. In case you need to position the speaker in a significant lower or higher position, the monitor should be angled accordingly.

The Stereo Triangle

If the loudspeaker is going to be used for stereo applications, the optimum listening position should be at the top of an imaginary equilateral triangle with the two loudspeakers to be placed at the other two points of this triangle. The loudspeakers should be aligned with the listener’s position.

Surround Placement

Speaker positioning for multi-channel stereo purposes is ideally based on a circle with speakers placed at 0° (Center), 30° (Front Right), 110° (Rear Right), 250° (Rear Left), 330° (Front Left), with the listener being the circle’s center (Radius between 0.7-2.0 m). This ITU recommended configuration may vary depending on the purpose of the control room (music or film). However, it is recommended to create a symmetrical listening position with the front side and surround speaker pointing to the listener’s ear. The distance to the surrounding walls should be at least 40 cm to avoid early reflections, which can degrade the sound.
Speaker Placement

Stand/Wall Mounting

On the F5 and F7 speakers you will find two metric M6 (6 mm) strew threads for stand/wall mounting on the rear side. Further equipment for mounting is also available. Please contact us for more information.

Please mount these loudspeakers onto indoor dry wood/plaster panel walls only. For other wall materials an additional isolation panel is required. The rear panel, and thus the wall mount hardware, is directly connected to the Audio- Ground of the speaker and the source device. Please keep this in mind when using the wall mount option and DO NOT connect the rear panel to anything possibly conductive.

Speaker Adjustment

Controls

On the rear side you will find controls that allow detailed fine-tuning of your loudspeakers to your particular room acoustics and personal listening preferences. The following tips are intended to assist you at using the controls in the best manner.

Please note that using the controls may have a great impact on the overall sound characteristics of your loudspeakers. We recommend using the controls with utmost care and only after several audio tests with familiar recordings.

EQ > 5kHz

The EQ > 5kHz is a shelving filter, which progressively raises or lowers the frequencies above 5kHz up to ±6 dB (at 20kHz).

Level

The Level control works for the whole frequency range and lets you adjust the overall volume of the speaker from -∞ dB to +6dB (+12dB for SubF).
While the speakers are designed to withstand full power operation with normal music signals there is a slight risk of permanently damaging the tweeter when continuous sine-waves or other test signals at high power and with frequencies above 2kHz are applied. Be careful with this kind of anomalous signals.

EQ < 300Hz

The EQ < 300Hz is a shelving filter, which progressively raises or lowers the frequencies below 300Hz up to ±6 dB (at 100Hz). When using a subwoofer, you may want to increase or decrease the sub’s volume accordingly, for a seamless integration with the subwoofer.

Highpass Filter (80Hz)

If you want to use your F-speakers as satellites in conjunction with the SubF, it is advisable to cut the low frequencies on your monitors which will result in improved clarity and dynamic range since they do not have to deliver large amplitudes. Further, correct phase and magnitude response of the Sub+Sat combination is assured this way for a typical setup.

Connecting the SubF Subwoofer

Connections

On the rear side of the SubF you can find two sets of balanced XLR/TRS combo inputs and unbalanced RCA connectors.

a) Before connecting the subwoofer to your audio components and the power source make sure that the subwoofer, the loudspeakers and your audio source are switched off and set the level controls fully counterclockwise.
b) Choose your preferred connection as described under 5.2.
c) Check if the mains voltage selector of the product matches your local mains voltage range you use and check if the installed fuses have the correct ratings for the selected settings. If this is not the case do not connect the subwoofer to a power source! Please contact your local dealer or national distributor. Use the included power cables to connect the SubF to the AC sockets.
d) Make sure that the line out level (volume) of your source is at a low level. Then, switch on your audio system.
e) On the rear panel of the SubF, set the volume at low level and switch on the mains switch and wait for about 5 secs. The SubF is now in Standby Mode and armed to automatically switch into Operating Mode as soon a signal is detected at any of the inputs.
f) Turn on your source of music and adjust the volume slowly and carefully until the SubF switches from Standby into Operating Mode, first using the volume control of your source. Adjust now the bass level to your liking by turning up or down the subwoofer’s volume control.

Input

Connect the left and right line-level signal from your signal source (preamplifier etc.) to the LEFT and RIGHT INPUT jacks. Use either the combo input for balanced XLR or 1/4“-TRS cables or the unbalanced RCA input jack.
When using two subwoofers (one for each stereo channel), connect only the respective channel.
Both the RCA and XLR/TRS inputs have the same sensitivity and are wired to sum up the inputs of their respective channel. Note that all four input channels (2x RCA, 2x XLR/TRS) are further summed together to form the signal to be used by the subwoofer channel, both for actual sound output and for signal sensing (for the automatic standby function).

Output To Satellite

Connect the LEFT and RIGHT OUTPUT TO SATELLITE jacks to the inputs of the left and right main powered speakers or the inputs of the amps powering the main speakers. Again, when using two subwoofers (one for each channel), connect only the respective channel. Both the RCA and XLR outputs have the same output level, and do not apply any gain change to the satellite signal. The output is a buffered copy of the input (however, a 80Hz high pass filter may additionally be engaged).

Please note:
The Satellite Outputs are not active (do not carry any signal) when the Subwoofer is in Standby Mode. This means that when both the Subwoofer and the Satellites are in Standby Mode, an input signal is needed.

Subwoofer Placement

It is common knowledge that single sources at low frequencies (below about 100Hz) are perceived as being non-directional under free field conditions, meaning they can hardly be located by the listener. It is, however, a common misunderstanding that therefore the placement of a mono (or two stereo) subwoofer(s) does not matter. It does matter. Due to the fact that every room (geometry, furniture, etc.) is unique, the following descriptions intend to be a first introduction to the subject. The aim is to assist you tackling the most common problems with subwoofers and room acoustics, notably interference and standing waves.

Distance to satellites

In most setups it is advisable to place the subwoofer not too far (preferably less than 2 meters) from the satellites and at about the same distance to the listener to minimize the chance of Interferences. Interference means the superposition of two or more waves resulting in an attenuation/cancellation or enhancement of the specific frequency/frequencies. Furthermore, big reflecting surfaces in close range of the subwoofer should be avoided if possible.

Walls/Distance to walls

Generally, every wall in relative close distance to the subwoofer enhances its sound pressure by about 6 dB. For instance, placing the subwoofer in a corner of a room will make it about 18 dB louder. It is likely that this will result in an impairment of the precision of the musical reproduction.
Another problem related to the geometrics of the room concerns the so called ‘standing waves’. These are sound waves being reciprocated between reflecting objects, so they ‘stand’ (don’t seem to  move)in between these objects. The speaker continues to produce new waves that combines its force with the first wave(s): a vicious circle that results in local imbalances of the particular frequencies.

Finding the optimum position

Give it a try! The most important tool for finding the best position for your subwoofer are your ears. There are two rather easy ways:
You can determine your listening spot first and then compare the sound of the subwoofer at different positions.
Another option is to place the subwoofer at the listening position and then move around. Whereever the sound is the best the subwoofer should be positioned.

SubF Controls

Controls for the Sub Level, Sub Filter, the signal phase and the satellite filter are located on the back panel of the subwoofer. The following tips are intended to assist you at using the controls in the best manner.

Level

This controls the Input Sensitivity in a range from -∞dB to +12dB. In order to accommodate personal taste and any influence of Low Shelf controls of the satellites (when used), the volume control has a bigger maximum range than the satellites.
However, keep the level settings for subwoofer(s) and satellites at approximately the same indicated scale levels, as a starting point. For example, if the satellite volume control is set to, say, “0dB” (center position), also use “0dB” at the subwoofer. This equally applies to setups with either one mono or two stereo subwoofers.

Low Pass Frequency (Sub Filter)

The upper frequency roll-off of the subwoofer’s output is variable and can be set to any value between 50 and 120Hz.
In a typical setup with a stereo source, use the following settings:

  • set the variable Low Pass Frequency on the SubF to 80Hz
  • switch the Satellite High Pass Filter on both the SubF and the satellites (i.e. HP 80Hz on F5 + F7 models) to 80Hz
  • switch the Subwoofer Phase to 0°
  • set the level controls on the subwoofer and the satellites to equal dB values, indicated by the scales around the knobs. If you are using the Low Shelf controls on the satellites, you may want to increase/decrease subwoofer level according to the Low Shelf control’s setting.

In setups using a surround receiver and the like which have their own speaker management, it is typically best to use the satellites in flat mode (80 Hz highpass not engaged on the satellite rear panel) and to dial in the highest possible cut-off frequency for the subwoofer (120 Hz) on its rear panel.

Subwoofer Phase

With the Phase Switch you can alter the phase of the subwoofer relative to the satellites. That means to change the polarity of the bass unit. Depending on the distance between woofer and satellites and on room acoustics, either 0° or 180° may be the better position. We recommend to try out what position sounds better within your system, but in most cases and in conjunction with F5/F7 speakers the phase switch should be left in the 0° position.

Satellite Filter

The satellites in a system can be fed full range from the subwoofer or with a restricted downward range of 80Hz, selectable with a slide switch on the subwoofer rear panel. If possible, send the main signal into the subwoofer. Connect your satellites to the subwoofer output, either via XLR (balanced) or RCA (unbalanced).

When engaging this high pass filter, in many cases clarity and dynamic range of the speakers can be improved if they do not reproduce very low frequencies since they do not have to deliver large cone excursions. Further, correct phase and magnitude response of the combination is assured this way in a typical setup consisting of F-Series components. Please note that both High Pass switches, on the subwoofer as well as on the satellites, should be activated for this.

Please note:
At the front of the SubF you will find two LEDs next to the ADAM logo that indicate the following conditions:

GREEN:
Main power is present and the subwoofer is active.

RED:
Standby Mode, meaning the subwoofer has switched to low power mode with automatic signal sensing.

Troubleshooting

All ADAM products are designed and manufactured to the highest quality standards. However, if any problems with your speaker occur, we recommend to proceed as follows:

Problem: The LED shows normal operation (green) but there is either no or only a distorted audio signal. If both (all) speakers are affected, the reason can probably be found within the signal path. If only one speaker is affected, the problem will probably be within this speaker.

a) Check the wiring.
Is the cable defective? Are all cables connected correctly? Please note that a cable plugged into the RCA input switches off the XLR/TRS input.
b) Check the signal path. Swap the cables of both loudspeakers. Does the problem change with one of the cables?
c) Connect the monitor as directly to the signal source as possible (please mind the volume!). Is another part of the signal path (e.g. mixer, subwoofer) defective?

If the answer to all these questions is ‘no’, the problem is being caused by the loudspeaker with the utmost probability.
If the answer to at least one of these questions is ‘yes’, there will probably be another defective device within the signal path.

Problem: You hear parasitic noises (like humming, buzzing, soughing, cracking).

a) Please disconnect the signal cables. If the noises disappear, check the signal path.
b) If the noises can still be heard, check for other electrical devices close to the speakers (mobile phones, switching power supplies, etc.). If the noise disappears by removing other electrical devices, they will cause the noise in most cases.
c) Connect your monitor to a different power socket, if possible with an extra fused phase. If the noise disappears use a different power source.

If after performing tests a) – c) the noise is still audible, it is most likely the speaker causing it. Please see 13.2 for claiming repairs under warranty.
