- The sensor is to be used to detect magnetic fields in explosive areas.
Intended use includes having read and understood these instructions completely, especially the section „Notes on Safety“.
Improper use
- The sensor must not be used for any application not stated in these instructions.
- The sensor must not be used under any operating conditions not stated in these instructions.
Personnel qualifications
Assembly and commissioning require basic electrical and pneumatic knowledge.
Assembly and commissioning may therefore only be carried out by qualified
electrical or pneumatic personnel or an instructed person under the direction
and supervision of qualified personnel. Qualified personnel are those who can
recognize possible hazards and institute the appropriate safety measures due
to their professional training, knowledge, and experience, as well as their
understanding of the relevant directives pertaining to the work to be done.
Qualified personnel must observe the rules relevant to the subject area and
have qualifications according to TRBS 1203.
General safety instructions
- Observe the local regulations to protect the environment in the country of use and to avoid workplace accidents.
- Do not change or modify the device.
- Only use the device within the performance range provided in the technical data. O Do not place any improper mechanical loads on the product under any circumstances.
- The warranty will not apply if the system is incorrectly assembled.
- Observe the requirements in the installation regulations.
Safety instructions related to the product and technology
During assembly
- Make sure the relevant system component is not under pressure or voltage before assembling the product or when connecting and disconnecting plugs.
- Only qualified persons (trained specialists) are permitted to install the electrical connector.
- Observe the general technical rules for the selection and operation of devices. O Take suitable measures to prevent unintended activation or impermissible interference.
- Do not place any mechanical loads, such as deflection, torsion, or impact loads, on the sensor. Install the sensor in a protected location.
During operation
- Only commission the sensor after it has been completely assembled, as well as correctly connected and tested.
- Observe the operating conditions and data imprinted on the relevant sensor or stated on its rating plate.
- Do not disconnect plugs or lines when the sensor is under voltage.
- Do not loosen any cables, lines, or valves if the system is under voltage or pressure.
ATEX – Information on explosion protection
The ATEX sensors from the SN6 series are certified and labeled according to
the enclosed declaration of conformity. They can be used in areas
- with gases, mists or vapors in zone 2
- with flammable dust particles in zone 22
Explanations on identification
Information on the year of manufacture of the sensor can be found in the
5-digit date code, which is located on one of the sides next to the rating
plate. The first two digits indicate the year and the last two digits indicate
the week.
WARNING
Danger of an ignition source due to impermissible operating conditions, connections, and parameters. Operating the sensor under impermissible operating conditions can result in an explosion.
- Observe the permissible operating conditions, in particular the ambient temperature and the mechanical protection for the device.
- Note the limited temperature range for ATEX conditions.
- Do not disconnect the electrical connector, plug connectors, and connecting cable from the sensor if it is under voltage.
- Do not disconnect the electrical connector from the sensor if it is under voltage.
- Only mount the SN6 sensor onto pneumatic valves or pneumatic cylinder-valve units (from AVENTICS GmbH), which have been tested in compliance with the valid ATEX guidelines or qualified as devices without own potential source of ignition.
- Observe the relevant Ex guidelines for installation, maintenance, and repair, especially EN 60079-14.
The device will lose its Ex approval if these instructions are not complied with.
Delivery Contents
- 1 x SN6 sensor (with electrical connector)
- 1 x set of operating instructions (R499050077)
About This Product
The SN6 sensor is a magnetic field switch with electrical connector. The SN6 sensor is a proximity sensor and is generally used to query the position of the piston in pneumatic cylinders that are operated in explosive atmospheres. Switch operation is indicated by an illuminated diode in the SN6 sensor.
Product identification
Observe the product information on the product and packaging.
Transport and Storage
There are no special transport instructions for this product. Nevertheless, observe the information in section 2 „Notes on Safety“.
Montage
CAUTION
Danger of injury if assembled under pressure or voltage!
Assembling when under pressure or voltage can lead to injuries. Make sure that
all relevant system parts are not under pressure or voltage before assembly.
Observe the following safety information during assembly:
- Observe the Ex guidelines EN 60079-14.
- The installation of electrical devices must be carried out in accordance with applicable national regulations and performed or supervised by an electrical specialist (in compliance with TRBS 1203 or equivalent).
- First compare the information on the device with the information in the operating instructions before installation.
- Take special care that no dirt or other foreign particles come into contact with the electrical connector components or the sensor seal.
- Install the sensor protected against mechanical impact and UV light (depending on the requirements/operating conditions).
- Install cables with protection or provide for strain relief. To avoid short circuits and interruptions, prevent sharp bending in the connection cables and strands.
Installing the switch unit
- Loosen the center screw in the electrical connector.
- Loosen the electrical connector from the sensor.
- Place the sensor on the appropriate clamp mounting
- Fasten the sensor to the clamp mounting with the mounting screw. Tightening torque for mounting screw: 1.5 Nm
- Ground the switch unit if you install electroconductive clamp mountings.
Connecting the cable
-
Disassemble the electrical connector.
-
Carefully remove the cable sealing ring and center screw.
IMPORTANT
The electrical connector is equipped with connection terminals that may be used as sleeve or flat terminals (screw head terminals). Preferably use wire end sleeves for the sleeve terminals and cable lugs for the flat terminals. Assign the terminals as shown in the wiring diagram 2. -
When feeding the cables through, make sure you comply with the component order and their orientation.
-
Connect the cables (see Technical Data).
-
Carefully insert the center screw. Make sure that the seal seat under the screw head is not damaged. Tightening torque for the plastic screw: 2.5 – 3.75 Nm.
-
Place the electrical connector on the sensor. Make sure that the sealing surfaces on the sensor and electrical connector are not dirty and that the seal is in the correct position.
Tightening torque for the center screw: 0.6 + 0.1 Nm
Setting the switch unit
- Slide the clamp mounting on the pneumatic cylinder tie rod to set the appropriate switch position (piston position).
- Fasten the clamp mounting to the tie rod with two hexagonal socket-head screws.
- Check that the switch unit sits close to the cylinder.
IMPORTANT
High inrush current loads, such as those occurring with purely capacitive
loads such as in capacitors, cables with a length greater than 20 m, or
incandescent lamps, can be compensated for to a certain extent through the use
of a series resistor. Here, the series resistors limit the maximum value of
the switching current for the switch unit. Purely inductive loads should be
protected by a recovery diode on the load. We recommend using protective
circuits for capacitive and inductive loads, such as those from long cables
and relays/contactors according to safety information R412013397.
Commissioning
Before commissioning, make sure that the device and entire machine or system comply with the EMC directive.
Operation
The given values for switching current and voltage (see Technical Data) must not be exceeded.
Disassembly and Exchange
When ordering spare parts, include the ID number located on the devices (label, rating plate).
IMPORTANT
If, by loosening the center screw, the electrical connector has been
separated from the sensor five times, the electrical connector and the flat
seal must be exchanged for original spare parts.
Service and Maintenance
The described sensors are maintenance-free.
Disposal
Scrap the device in accordance with local regulations.
Extension and Conversion
Do not change or modify the device.
Troubleshooting
In the case of malfunctions, check the line connections and the operating voltage. If the malfunction continues, proceed as follows:
- Ensure that the device is not under pressure.
- Disconnect the device from the power supply and hand the defective unit over to a qualified person (see Personnel qualifications).
