WARNING: The warnings and safety instructions in this manual must be followed to reduce the risk of fire, electric shock, or injury, and to provide reasonable safety and efficiency in using this unit. The operator is responsible for following the warnings and instructions in this manual and on the unit. Read the entire Operator’s Manual before assembling and using the unit! Restrict the use of this unit to persons who read, understand, and follow the warnings and instructions in this manual and on the unit. Never al- low children to use this unit.

OPERATOR SAFETY

• Always wear safety glasses or similar eye pro- tection when operating, servicing, or performing maintenance on your unit. Wearing eye protection can help to prevent rocks or debris from being blown or ricocheting into eyes and face which can result in blindness or serious injury.
• Always wear a respirator or facemask when working with the unit in dusty environments.
• Dress safely in long pants. Do not go barefoot or wear short pants or sandals.
• Do not operate the unit when you are tired, ill, upset, or if you are under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or medication.
• Keep loose hair, loose clothing, fingers, and all other parts of the body away from open- ings and moving parts. Jewelry, loose clothing, or clothing with loosely hanging straps, ties, tassels, etc., can be caught in moving parts. Secure hair so it is above shoulder length.

ELECTRICAL SAFETY

• Use only a voltage supply as shown on the name plate of the unit.

• Avoid dangerous situations. Do not use in pres- ence of flammable liquids or gases to avoid creating a fire or explosion and/or causing damage to unit.

• TO REDUCE THE RISK OF ELECTRICAL SHOCK–Do not use in damp or wet locations or. around swimming pools, hot tubs, etc. Do not ex- pose to snow, rain, or water. Do not handle exten- sion cord plug or unit with wet hands.

• To reduce the risk of electrical shock, use extension cords specifically marked as suitable for outdoor ap- pliances having electrical rating not less than the rating of the unit. The cord must be marked with the suffix “W-A” (in Canada, “W”). Use a polarized cord. Make sure your extension cord is in good condition. If damaged, have the cord replaced. An undersized extension cord will cause a drop in line voltage resulting in loss of power and overheating. If in doubt, use the next heavier gauge. The smaller the gauge number, the heavier the cord.
  (NOTE: The correct size to be used depending on the cord length is shown in this manual).

• Inspect the insulation and connectors on the unit and extension cord before each use. If there is any damage, do not use until damage is repaired by an Authorized Service Dealer.

• Do not pull or carry by cord; do not use cord as a handle, close a door on cord, or pull cord around sharp edges or corners. Keep cord away from heated surfaces. Do not unplug by pulling on cord. To un- plug, grasp the plug, not the cord.

• To reduce the possibility of the extension cord disconnecting from the unit during oper- ation, tie cord to cord retainer and connect to re- cessed plug as shown in this manual.

• Do not use the unit if the switch does not turn the unit on and off properly. Have the unit re- paired by an Authorized Service Dealer.

• Keep the extension cord clear of operator and obstacles at all times. Do not expose cords to heat, oil, water, or sharp edges.

• Avoid any body contact with any grounded conductor, such as metal pipes or wire fences, to avoid the possibility of electric shock. Do not handle plug or unit with wet hands.

• Do not use with damaged cord or plug If unit is not working as: sit should, has been dropped, dam- aged, left outdoors, or dropped into water, return it to an Authorized Service Dealer for repair.

• Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) protection should be provided on the circuit or out- let to be used for this unit. Receptacles are available having built-in GFCI protection and may be used for this measure of safety.

• To reduce the risk of electrical shock, this equipment has a polarized plug. This plug will fit into a polarized outlet of extension cord only one way (one blade is wider than the other). If the plug does not fit fully into the outlet, reverse the plug. If it still does not fit, contact a qualified electrician to install the proper outlet. Do not change the plug in any way.

UNIT/MAINTENANCE SAFETY

• Turn off all controls and allow the motor to stop before disconnecting the unit from the power source.

• Disconnect the unit from the power source when not in use. Do not leave the unit when it is plugged into an outlet.

• Avoid dangerous environments. Do not use in unventilated areas or where dust or explosive va- pors can build up.

• Do not set the unit on any surface except a clean, hard area while the unit is running. Debris such as gravel, sand, dust, grass, etc., could be picked up by the air intake and thrown out through the discharge opening, damaging the unit, property, or causing serious injury to bystanders or operator.

• Do not overreach or use from unstable sur- faces such as ladders, trees, steep slopes, rooftops, etc. Use extra care when cleaning on stairways. Keep firm footing and balance at all times.

• Inspect the entire unit before each use for worn, loose, missing, or damaged parts. Do not use until the unit is in proper working order.
  Disconnect unit from power source before servicing, cleaning, performing maintenance, or storing.

• This unit is Double Insulated. See the “DOUBLE INSULATION” section. Have all inter- nal service performed by qualified service repair personnel to avoid creating a hazard or voiding
  your warranty.

• Have all maintenance other than the recom- mended procedures described in the Operator’s Manual performed by an authorized service dealer.

• Always see an authorized service dealer to re- place a damaged impeller. Parts that are chipped, cracked, broken, or damaged in any other way can fly apart and cause serious injury. Replace damaged parts before using the unit.

• Never place any object in the air intake open- ing as this could restrict proper air flow and cause damage to the unit.

• Never douse the unit with water or other liq- uids or squirt with a water hose. Clean with a damp sponge and mild soap. See “STORAGE.”

• Check air intake openings and tubes fre- quently, always with the unit stopped and power source disconnected. Keep vents and tubes free of debris which can accumulate and restrict proper air flow.

• Do not burn, incinerate, or expose this unit to ex- treme heat.

• Store the unit unplugged in a high, cool, dry, indoors area out of the reach of children.

• Use only recommended attachments and re- placement parts to avoid creating a hazard and/or voiding your warranty.

• Maintain the unit according to recom- mended procedures.

• Use only for jobs explained in this manual.

BLOWER SAFETY

• Keep others including children, animals, by- standers, and helpers a minimum of 30 feet (10 meters) away. Stop the motor immediately if you are approached. Do not allow the unit to be used as a toy.
• Use only in daylight or in good artificial light.
• Inspect the area before using the unit. Re- move all debris and hard objects such as rocks, glass, wire, etc., that can ricochet, be thrown, or oth- erwise cause injury or damage during operation.
• Avoid accidental starting. Be sure the switch is in the “off” position and keep your hand and fingers away from the switch while connecting the unit to the power source or when carrying a unit connected to the power source.
• Never run the unit without the proper equip- ment attached. When used as a blower, always in- stall a blower tube. Use only recommended attach- ments.
• To avoid spreading fire, do not use blower near leaf or brush fires, fireplaces, barbecue pits, ash- trays, etc.
• Never place objects inside the blower tubes; always direct the blowing debris away from people, animals, glass, and solid objects such as trees, auto- mobiles, walls, etc. The force of air can cause rocks, dirt, or sticks to be thrown or to ricochet which can hurt people or animals, break glass, or cause other damage.
• Never use for spreading chemicals, fertilizers, or any other substances which may contain toxic materials.

VACUUM SAFETY (If applicable)

• Stop the motor and disconnect the power source before opening the air inlet door or at- tempting to insert or remove the vacuum tubes. The motor must be stopped and the impeller blades no longer turning to avoid serious injury from the ro- tating blades.
• When using the vacuum attachment, the unit is designed to pick up dry material such as leaves, grass, small twigs, and bits of paper. Do not vacuum stones, gravel, metal, broken glass, etc., to avoid se- vere damage to the impeller. To avoid the possibility of electrical shock, do not attempt to vacuum water or other liquids.
• Never run the unit without the proper equip- ment attached. When used as a vacuum, always install vacuum tubes and collection bag assembly. Make sure the collection bag assembly is completely zipped when unit is running to avoid flying debris. Use only recommended attachments.
• Avoid situations which could set the collec- tion bag on fire. Do not vacuum discarded matches, cigars, cigarettes, or ash from fireplaces, barbecue pits, brush piles, etc. To avoid spreading fire, do not use blower near leaf or brush fires, fire- places, barbecue pits, ashtrays, etc.
• Always use the collection bag shoulder strap when vacuuming to avoid loss of control.
• Check air intake openings, elbow tube, and vacuum tubes frequently, always with the unit stopped and the power source disconnected. Keep vents and tubes free of debris which can accumulate and restrict proper air flow.

B. UNPACKING INSTRUCTIONS

1. Remove contents from the carton if you have not done so.
2. Check parts against the Carton Contents List.
3. Examine parts for damage. Do not use damaged parts.
4. Notify your Authorized Service Dealer immediately if a part is missing or damaged.

NOTE: These parts are also available in Accessory Kit VA1905 for use with Model 2540. Refer to “Accessories” to order.

C. DOUBLE INSULATION CONSTRUCTION

Your unit is Double Insulated to help protect against electric shock. Double insulation construc- tion

consists of two separate “layers” of electrical in- sulation instead of grounding.
Tools and appliances built with a double insulation system are not intended to be grounded. No grounding means is provided on this unit, nor should a means for grounding be added to this unit. As a result, your unit can be plugged into any standard 120 volt electrical outlet.

Safety precautions must be observed when op- erating any electrical tool. The double insulation system only provides added protection against injury resulting from an internal electrical insulation failure.

WARNING
All electrical repairs to this unit, including hous- ing, switch, motor, etc., must be diagnosed and re- paired by an Authorized Service Dealer. Replace- ment parts for a double insulated appliance must doub be identical to the parts they replace. A double in- sulated appliance is marked with the words “DOUBLE INSULATION” or “DOUBLE INSU- LATED.” The symbol (square within a square) may also be marked on the appliance. Failure to have the unit repaired by an Authorized Ser- vice Dealer can cause the double insulation con- struction to become ineffective and result in seri- ous injury.

ASSEMBLY

A. PREPARATION

Your Operator’s Manual has been developed to help you assemble the unit and to understand its safe opera- tion. It is important that you read your manual com- pletely to become familiar with the unit before you be- gin assembly. 1. READ YOUR OPERATOR’S MANUAL.
2. A standard screwdriver is required for vacuum tube assembly.

B. BLOWER TUBE ASSEMBLY.

For using your unit as a blower:

1. Assemble the blower tube to the blower outlet. Fig- ure 1. Turn the blower tube clockwise until secure.
2. Assemble the nozzle to the blower tube. Figure 1. Turn the nozzle clockwise until secure.

C. VACUUM TUBE ASSEMBLY (Model 2560)

For using your unit as a vacuum:

NOTE: Before installing the vacuum tubes and vacu- um bag, stop the unit and disconnect the power source. Remove the blower tube and nozzle (if installed) before installing the vacuum tubes and vacuum bag.

WARNING
Unplug the unit before opening the vacuum inlet door or attempting to insert or remove the vacu- um tubes. The motor must be stopped and the im- peller blades no longer turning to avoid serious injury from the rotating blades.

1. Set the unit on a flat surface (Figure 2). Open the vacuum inlet cover as follows:

a. Insert a screwdriver into the latch area as shown in Figure 2 (inset).
b. Gently twist the tip of the screwdriver and open the vacuum vacuum inlet cover with your other hand.

2. Locate the arrows on the upper vacuum tube and on the vacuum inlet. Figure 3.

3. Hold open the vacuum inlet cover and align arrow 1 with the arrow on the vacuum inlet. Figure 3.

4. Insert the upper vacuum into the vacuum inlet; twist upper vacuum tube clockwise until arrow 2 is aligned with the arrow on vacuum inlet. Figure 4.
   

5. Assemble the vacuum tubes by aligning the arrow on the lower vacuum tube with the arrow on the up- per vacuum tube. Figure 5. Push the two tubes to- gether until lower vacuum tube bottoms out inside upper vacuum tube (about 3 inches). **Figure 5.

D. VACUUM BAG ASSEMBLY – (Model 2560)

1. Make sure the zipper on the bag is closed completely and the zipper is tucked under the flap.

2. Slide the opening of the vacuum bag over the collar. Figure 6. Pull the velcro strap tightly through the metal ring; secure as shown in Figure 6.
   NOTE: Make sure the velcro strap is located between the motor housing and the collar. Figure 6.

3. Adjust the vacuum collection bag until the shoulder strap is aligned with the upper handle. Figure 8.

E. SHOULDER STRAP ADJUSTMENT (Model

1. Carefully loop the strap through the buckle as shown in Figure 7. Notice the first in and last in pass through the same hole.

2. Hold the unit in an upright position, supporting the lower vacuum tube on the ground. Figure 8. Make sure the blower and collection bag are positioned on your right-hand side. Figure 8.

3. Place the collection bag strap on your left shoulder.

4. Hold the handle with your left hand and extend your right arm toward the rear of the collection bag as shown in Figure 8.

5. Adjust the shoulder strap until the collection bag/ shoulder strap seam lies between your thumb and index finger. Figure 8.
   

6. Make sure the shoulder strap is adjusted to allow a free flow of air from the blower outlet. Figure
   If the bag is kinked, the unit will not operate properly.

F. BLOWER CONVERSION

1. Stop the unit and disconnect the power source.
2. Remove vacuum tubes and collection bag assembly.
3. Secure the vacuum inlet cover by making sure that the cover latch is securely fastened.
4. Reinstall blower tubes as instructed in section “B. Blower Tube Assembly

G. PRE-OPERATION CHECKS

Before operating your unit, always:

1. CHECK OVER WARNINGS AND SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS in this Operator’s Manual. Make certain you completely understand and fol- low each one.
2. CHECK THE UNIT FOR LOOSE SCREWS OR FITTINGS.
   Tighten, repair, or replace parts as necessary. Use only genuine replacement parts as recommended by the manufacturer.

H. EXTENSION CORD

1. Use only a voltage supply as shown on the nameplate of the unit.

2. The extension cord used to reach the power source must be:
   a. Polarized and specifically marked as suitable for outdoor use. The cord must be marked with the suffix “W-A.” (“W” in Cana- da).
   b. Heavy enough to carry the current from the power source the full length of the extension cord to the unit. Otherwise, loss of power and overheating can occur causing damage to the unit. Refer to Figure 9 for mini- mum wire gauge recommendations. The cord must be marked with the proper wire gauge. (Appropriate extension cords are available.)
   c. In good condition. Cord insulation must be intact with no cracks or deterioration. Plug connectors must be undamaged.
   NOTE: Do not use multiple cords.

3. Secure extension cord to unit as follows:
   a. Tie the cord onto the cord retainer. Figure 10.
   b. Insert the cord receptacle into the recessed plug. Figure 10.

To reduce the risk of electric shock, this unit has a polarized plug (one blade is wider than the other). This plug will fit in a polarized extension cord only one way. If the plug does not fit fully into the extension cord, re- verse the cord. If it still does not fit, make sure you have a polarized extension cord. If the extension cord does not fit into the outlet, reverse the cord. If it still does not fit into the outlet, contact a qualified electrician to install the proper outlet. Do not change the plug or socket of the unit or extension cord in any way.

USING YOUR UNIT

A. OPERATOR SAFETY

As a blower, the unit is designed to sweep debris, grass, straw, leaves, or small twigs. Never use for spreading or misting chemicals, fertilizers, or any oth- er materials which may contain toxic substances. Your vacuum is designed to pick up dry material only, such as sawdust, grass, small leaves, small twigs, and bits of paper.

DANGER
Do not attempt to vacuum water or other liquids or wet objects such as leaves. Vacuuming water or other liquids will cause damage to the unit and could result in injury, including death by electro- cution.

WARNING
Vacuuming very hard objects such as nails, bolts, and rocks will severely damage the unit. Hard ob- jects can be thrown through the collection bag or the housing and become dangerous missiles which can cause serious injury to the operator or others. Avoid situations that could catch the col- lection bag on fire. Do not operate near an open flame. Do not vacuum discarded cigars or ciga- rettes or ash from fireplaces, barbecue pits, brush piles, etc.

WARNING
Do not assemble or disassemble the vacuum tube while the unit is running. Inserting or removing the vacuum tube while the unit is running can re- sult in serious injury. Always stop the unit and disconnect the power source before unclogging the unit or performing any maintenance on the collection bag.

WARNING
Do not use the unit as a vacuum without the vacu- um tubes and collection bag properly attached to avoid flying debris and/or impeller contact which can cause serious injury. Always make sure the collection bag is completely zipped before the unit is started.

1. Read your Operator’s Manual. Make sure you completely understand and can follow all warnings and safety instructions in the manual before operat- ing the unit.
2. Always wear eye protection when opperating, servicing, or performing maintenance to your unit. Rocks or debris can be blown or ricochetted into eyes and face which can result in blindness or other serious injury.
3. Always wear a respirator or facemask when working in dusty environments.
4. Always wear heavy, long pants, boots, and gloves. Do not go barefoot or wear short pants, sandals, jewelry, loose clothing, or clothing with loosely hanging straps, ties, tassels, etc.; they can be caught in moving parts. Secure hair so it is above shoulder length. Being fully covered will help pro- tect you from pieces of toxic plants such as poison ivy thrown by the blade, which could be more of a hazard than touching the plant itself.
5. Check the unit before each operation. Look 6. for worn, loose, missing, or damaged parts. Do not use the unit until it is in proper working order.
6. Inspect area before operating the unit. Re- move all debris and objects such as rocks, glass, wire, large sticks, nails, etc., that can cause damage during operation.
7. Keep children, bystanders, and animals safe- ly away. Before starting the unit and during opera- tion, make certain children, people, and animals are a minimum of 30 feet away from the work area.
8. Always use the collection bag shoulder strap to avoid loss of control.
9. Check air intake opening, blower tubes, and vacuum tubes frequently, always with the motor stopped and the power source disconnected. Keep vents and discharge tubes free of debris which can accumulate and restrict proper air flow. .
10. Do not plug unit into any receptacle other than a normal 120 volt household outlet.
11. Never immerse any part of the unit into any liquid.
12. Use the correct operating position. Figures 11 & 12. Do not overreach or use from unstable sur- faces such as ladders, trees, steep slopes, roof tops, etc. Keep firm footing and balance at all times.
13. Never place objects inside the blower tubes; always direct blowing debris away from people, ani- mals, glass, and solid objects such as trees, automo- biles, walls, etc. The force of air can cause rocks, dirt, or sticks to be thrown or to ricochet, which may hurt people or animals, break glass, or cause other damage.
14. When using unit as a vacuum, always use collec- tion bag shoulder strap to avoid loss of control.
15. Never run the unit without the proper equip- ment attached. When using your unit as a blower, always install blower tubes. When using your unit as a vacuum, always install vacuum tubes and col- lection bag assembly. Make sure collection bag as- sembly is completely zipped.
16. Adjust shoulder strap to fit properly before oper- ation of unit equipped with optional vacuum kit.

B. OPERATING TIPS – BLOWER

WARNING
Do not use the unit as a blower without the blow- er tubes properly attached to avoid flying debris and/or impeller contact which can cause serious injury.

WARNING
Always wear eye protection to prevent rocks or debris from being blown or ricocheting into the eyes and face which can result in blindness or se- rious injury.

1. Always work going away from solid objects such as walls, large stones, automobiles and fences.
2. Clean corners by starting in corners and mov- ing outward to straight areas to prevent an accu- mulation of debris which could fly into face.
3. Be careful when working near plants. The force of the air could damage tender plants.
4. Direct air flow by directing the nozzle down or to one side.
5. Vary the air flow by adjusting the 2-speed switch to the desired position.
6. Uses For Your Blower:
   a. Sweeping debris or grass clippings from drive- ways, sidewalks, patios, etc.
   b. Blowing grass clippings, straw, or leaves into piles.
   c. Removing debris from corners, around joints, and between bricks.

C. OPERATING TIPS – VACUUM

1. When using your vacuum, best results are achieved when the unit is operated on high speed.
2. Move the unit slowly back and forth over de- bris to be vacuumed. Avoid forcing the lower vacuum tube into a pile of debris as this can clog the unit.
3. The vacuum can pick up objects that are too big to pass through the impeller. This type of object will fall out of the vacuum adapter/tubes when the unit is stopped.
4. If the unit becomes clogged:
   a. Stop the unit and disconnect the power source. Do not attempt to remove obstructions when the unit is running.
   b. Wait until the impeller has completely stopped turning, then remove vacuum tube assembly.
   c. Carefully reach into the vacuum opening and clear out debris.

GENERAL MAINTENANCE

A. MAINTAIN UNIT WITH CARE

WARNING
This blower is provided with double insulation. Use only identical replacement parts. All electri- cal repairs to the unit, including housing, switch, motor, etc., must be diagnosed and repaired by an Authorized Service Dealer. Failure to do so can cause the double insulation construction to be- come ineffective and result in serious injury to the operator.

1. Keep air intake clean and air vents free of debris to avoid overheating the motor. Figure 13. Prevent foreign objects from entering fan area.

2. If an object is drawn into the unit through the air intake, do the following:
   a. Disconnect the unit from the power source.
   b. Open the inlet cover (Figure 14).

c. Locate and remove the object(s).
d. Inspect impeller for cracks. If damaged, do not operate unit to avoid injury to operator or oth- ers and/or damage to the unit. Have impeller replaced by an Authorized Service Dealer. Do not attempt to replace it yourself.
e. Rotate the impeller to be certain it turns freely. If it does not, check for additional foreign ma- terial or have unit inspected and repaired by an Authorized Service Dealer.

3. If unit vibrates abnormally, stop motor im- mediately. Abnormal vibration usually indi- cates a mechanical problem and continued opera- tion could lead to injury to operator or others and/ or damage to the unit.

4. The unit is equipped with self-lubricating bearings. Periodic relubrication is not required.

5. If the unit fails to operate, disconnect cord from the unit and the power source. Make sure the cord is undamaged and that house fuses are not blown or circuit breakers tripped. If the unit still fails to operate, take or send it to an Autho- rized Service Dealer for repair. Do not attempt to
   repair it yourself.

6. Store indoors in a cool, dry location out of the reach of children.

7. Unplug unit from power source when servic- ing, cleaning, or storing the unit.

8. Do not attempt to repair unit. Repairs must be performed by authorized service dealer.

9. Do not plug extension cord into any receptacle other than a normal 120 volt houshold outlet.

10. Never immerse any part of unit into any liquid.

11. Do not incinerate or expose unit to extreme heat

WARNING
Maintain the unit according to recommended procedures.

WARNING
Avoid all types of detergents, cleaners or sol- vents. Never submerge the unit or douse it with water or any other liquid.

B. STORAGE

1. Unplug unit from power source when servic- ing, cleaning, or storing the tool.
2. Clean the unit before storing. Make sure the unit is unplugged from the power source. Pay par- ticular attention to the air intake and air vents; keep them free of debris. Use a mild detergent and sponge dampened with warm water to clean the plastic surfaces. Avoid all other types of deter- gents, cleaners, or solvents; they can contain chemicals, such as aromatic oils (lemon, pine) or kerosine, that can seriously damage the plastic housing. Do not spray the unit with water.
