Pre-installation Checklist
Before starting the installation process, check that your package includes
the following items:
- RTH6300B thermostat (wallplate attached to the back)
- Quick reference card
- Operating manual
- Wall anchors and mounting screws (2 each)
- Caution card
- Wire labels
Old Thermostat Removal
- Turn off power at the heating/cooling system or fuse/circuit-breaker panel.
- Remove the cover and thermostat, but leave the wallplate with wires attached.
- If your old thermostat contains a sealed tube of mercury, refer to the inside front cover of the manual for proper disposal instructions. Do not place it in the trash.
Wire Identification
Count the number of wires coming out of the wall and attached to terminals
in your old thermostat. If any of them are attached to a terminal marked C or
C1, do not count that wire in your total. If the total (not counting C or C1)
is 5 wires or less, proceed to the next page. If you have 6 or more wires,
your new thermostat may not be compatible with your system. Stop installation
and call 1-800-468-1502 for advice.

Your new thermostat has been designed for fast, easy installation. Just follow the simple, step-by-step instructions in the following pages.
Install in three simple steps
- Label wires and remove your old thermostat (see pages 5-8).
- Install and wire your new thermostat (see pages 9-15).
- Set your new thermostat to match your heating/cooling system (see pages 16-21).
Installation tips
- Have everything you need ready to go before you begin (see pages 3-4).
- Do not use wire color as a guide. Use wire labels instead (see page 8).
Pre-installation checklist
Check to make sure your package includes the following items:

Required tools & supplies
- No. 2 Phillips screwdriver
- Small pocket screwdriver
- Drill
- Drill bit (3/16” for drywall, 7/32” for plaster)
- Hammer
- Pencil
- Electrical tape
- Level (optional)
- Two fresh AA alkaline batteries
Remove your old thermostat
- Turn off power at heating/cooling system (or fuse/circuit-breaker panel).
- Remove cover and thermostat, but leave wallplate with wires attached.
Did you purchase right thermostat? Count wires to check.
Count the number of wires coming out of the wall and attached to terminals in
your old thermostat. If any of them are attached to a terminal marked “C” or
“C1” do not count that wire in your total.
If the total (not counting C or C1) is 5 wires or less, proceed to the next
page. If you have 6 or more wires, your new thermostat may not be compatible
with your system. Stop installation and call
1-800-468-1502 for advice.
Identify wires you will not use
If any wires are not attached to terminals in your old thermostat, do not
connect them to your new thermostat.
If a wire is attached to a terminal marked “CC” or “CC11,” disconnect it.You
will not connect it to your new thermostat.
Wrap the bare metal ends of each unused wire with electrical tape, so it
cannot touch and short out other wires.
Label wires and remove old wallplate
Use a screwdriver to disconnect wires one by one.As you disconnect each wire,
wrap it with the label matching the letter on your old thermostat. (Adhesive
labels are supplied in your thermostat package.)
Remove the old wallplate only after all wires are labeled. Be careful not to
let loose wires fall into the wall opening.
IGNORE WIRE COLORS : Use only letter designations to identify wire types.
Remove wallplate and install quick reference card
- Insert finger into wire hole and pull to remove wallplate from new thermostat.
- Insert quick reference card into slot in back of thermostat.
Mark wallplate mounting position
Mount wallplate
- Drill holes at pencil-marked locations 3/16” holes for drywall 7/32” holes for plaster
- Use hammer to tap anchors into holes until flush with wall
- Place wallplate over anchors and insert screws. Check level if desired, then tighten screws.
Connect wires (typical installation)
- Match each labeled wire with same letter on terminal
- Use a screwdriver to loosen screw terminals, insert wires, then tighten screws
- Push any excess wire back into the wall opening.
Labels don’t match?
If labels do not match letters on thermostat, see next page.
Connect wires (less common wire designations)
If labels do not match letters on the thermo-stat, check the chart at right
and connect to terminal as shown here (see notes, below).
- If wires will be connected to both R and Rc terminals, remove metal jumper (see page 12).
- Do not connect both O and B if you have a heat pump. Connect O wire to O/B W. Wrap B wire with electrical tape and do not use.
- Do not use C, X or B. Wrap bare end of wire with electrical tape.
Install batteries
Install two fresh AA alkaline batteries in back of the thermostat.
After installation, batteries can be changed without removing the thermostat
from the wall (see Operating Manual for more information).
Mount thermostat and restore electrical power
- Align the 4 tabs on the wallplate with corresponding slots on the back of the thermostat, then push gently until the thermostat snaps into place.
- Restore electrical power at the heating/cooling system, or at the fuse/circuit-breaker panel.
TIP: If wires interfere when you try to mount the thermostat, push excess wire back into the wall opening.
System setup (set the thermostat to match your system)
Next, you must set the thermostat to control the heating and cooling system in
your home. Press and hold the and FFAANN buttons to enter system setup.
To begin, press and hold the buttons until the and FAN display changes:
- Press or to change settings.
- Press NEXT to advance to next function.
- Press DONE to exit and save settings.
Function 1: System type
Press to change setting. When correct setting is selected, press NNEEXXTT to display next function.
Press the or button to select the type of climate control system you have in your home:
- Heating & cooling: Gas, oil or electric heating with central air conditioning.
- Heat pump: Outside compressor provides both heating and cooling.
- Heating only: Gas, oil or electric heating without central air conditioning.
- Heating only with fan: Gas, oil or electric heating without central air conditioning. (Use this setting if you could turn the fan on and off with a fan switch on your old thermostat.)
Function 2: Heat pump changeover valve
Press to change setting. When correct setting is selected, press NNEEXXTT to display next function.
Press the or button to select whether your changeover valve is used in heating or cooling:
- Cooling changeover valve: Use this setting ifc you connected a wire labeled “O” to the O/B W wire terminal (see page 13).
- Heating changeover valve: Use this setting if you connected a wire labeled “B” to the O/B W wire terminal (see page 13).
Note : If Function 2 does not appear, please turn to the next page to continue.
Function 3: Heating fan control
Press to change setting. When correct setting is selected, press NNEEXXTT to display next function.
Press the or button to select your heating system and fan operation:
- Gas or oil heat: Use this setting if you have a gas or oil heating system (system controls fan operation).
- Electric heat: Use this setting if you have an electric heating system (thermostat controls fan operation).
Note: If Function 3 does not appear, please turn to the next page to continue.
Function 5: Heating cycle rate
Press to change setting. When correct setting is selected, press NNEEXXTT to display next function.
Press the or button to select your heating system and optimize its operation:
- 5 Gas or oil furnace: Use this setting if you have a standard gas or oil furnace that is less than 90% efficient.
- 9 Electric furnace: Use this setting if you have any type of electric heating system.
- 3 Hot water or high-efficiency furnace: Use this setting if you have a hot water system or a gas furnace of greater than 90% efficiency.
- 1 Gas/oil steam or gravity system: Use this setting if you have a steam or gravity heat system.
Note: If Function 5 does not appear, please turn to the next page to continue.
Function 14: Temperature display
Press the or button t o s elect Fahrenheit or Celsius temperature display:
- Fahrenheit temperature display (°F)
- Celsius temperature display (°C)
Press to change setting. When correct setting is selected, press DDOONNEE to exit and save changes.

Limited 1-year warranty
Honeywell warrants this product, excluding battery, to be free from defects in
the workmanship or materials, under normal use and service, for a period of
one (1) year from the date of purchase by the consumer. If at any time
during the warranty period the product is determined to be defective or
malfunctions, Honeywell shall repair or replace it (at Honeywell’s option).
If the product is defective,
- return it, with a bill of sale or other dated proof of purchase, to the place from which you purchased it; or
