IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS

⚠ WARNING: When using electric gardening appliances, basic safety precautions should always be followed to reduce the risk of fire, electric shock, and personal injury, including the following safety instructions.
Read all instructions and warnings.

1. Avoid dangerous environment – Don’t use appliances in damp or wet locations.
2. Don’t use in rain.
3. Dress properly – Do not wear loose clothing or jewelry. They can be caught in moving parts. Use of rubber gloves and substantial footwear is recommended when working outdoors. Wear protective hair covering to contain long hair.
4. Use safety glasses – Always use face or dust mask if operation is dusty.
5. Use right appliance – Do not use appliance for any job except that for which it is intended.
6. Avoid unintentional starting – Don’t carry battery-installed appliance with finger on switch. Be sure switch is off when installing batteries.
7. Don’t force appliance – It will do the job better and with less likelihood of a risk of injury at the rate for which it was designed.
8. Don’t overreach – Keep proper footing and balance at all times.
9. Stay alert – Watch what you are doing. Use common sense. Do not operate appliance when you are tired.
10. Store idle appliances indoors – When not in use, appliances should be stored indoors in dry, and high or locked-up place – out of reach of children.
11. Maintain appliance with care – Keep cutting edge sharp and clean for best performance and to reduce the risk of injury. Follow instructions for lubricating and changing accessories. Keep handles dry, clean, and free from oil and grease.
12. Check damaged parts – Before further use of the appliance, a guard or other part that is damaged should be carefully checked to determine that it will operate properly and perform its intended function. Check for alignment of moving parts, binding of moving parts, breakage of parts, mounting, and any other condition that may affect its operation. A guard or other part that is damaged should be properly repaired or replaced by an authorized service center unless indicated elsewhere in this manual.
13. Keep hands away from blades.

Training/ Information

1. Do not insert key into the equipment until it is ready to be used.
2. Be familiar with the controls and proper use of the equipment.
3. Never allow children or people unfamiliar with the instructions to use the machine. Local regulations can restrict the age of the operator.
4. Never work while people, especially children, or pets are nearby.
5. Keep in mind that the operator or user is responsible for accidents or hazards occurring to other people or their property.

Preparation

1. While working, always wear substantial footwear and long trousers. Do not operate the equipment when barefoot or wearing open sandals.
2. Thoroughly inspect the area where the equipment is to be used and remove all objects which can be thrown up by the machine.
3. Before using, always visually inspect to see that the tools are not worn out or damaged. Replace worn out or damaged elements and bolts in sets to preserve balance.

Operation

1. Work only in daylight or in good artificial light.

2. When working on slopes:
   – Make sure that there are no children or other people within a working range of 20 meters (66 ft), also pay attention to any animals in the working vicinity. Otherwise stop using the tool.
   – always be sure of your footing,
   – work across the slopes, never up and down,
   – exercise extreme caution when changing direction on slopes.

3. Do not work on excessively steep slopes.

4. Walk, never run with the machine.

5. Use extreme caution when reversing or pulling the machine towards you.

6. Start the motor carefully according to
   manufacturer instructions and with feet well away from the tool(s).

7. Do not put your hands or feet near or under rotating parts.

8. Never pick up or carry a machine while the motor is running.

9. Switch off the equipment and remove the lock key in the cases below:
   – whenever you leave the machine unattended,
   – before clearing blockages.

10. Pay particular attention on hard or stony field because the machine tends to be much less stable than on cultivated ground and use slow speed for ploughing.

Maintenance and storage

1. Before storing the machine in a confined or closed place, let it cool down for a sufficient period of time.
2. Keep all nuts, bolts and screws tight to ensure the equipment is in safe working condition.
3. To reduce the fire hazard, keep the motor, battery compartment and storage area free of vegetative material and excessive grease.
4. Switch off the equipment and remove the lock key in the cases below:
   – before checking, cleaning or working on the machine,
   – after striking a foreign object. Inspect the machine for damage and make repairs before restarting and operating the machine,
   – if the machine starts to vibrate abnormally. Inspect for damage and replace or repair any damaged parts. Check for and tighten any loose parts.

IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS

FOR BATTERY CARTRIDGE

1. Before using battery cartridge, read all instructions and cautionary markings on (1) battery charger, (2) battery, and (3) product using battery.
2. Do not disassemble battery cartridge.
3. If operating time has become excessively shorter, stop operating immediately. It may result in a risk of overheating, possible burns and even an explosion.
4. If electrolyte gets into your eyes, rinse them out with clear water and seek medical attention right away. It may result in loss of your eyesight.
5. Do not short the battery cartridge: (1) Do not touch the terminals with any conductive material. (2) Avoid storing battery cartridge in a container with other metal objects such as nails, coins, etc. (3) Do not expose battery cartridge to water or rain. A battery short can cause a large current flow, overheating, possible burns and even a breakdown.
6. Do not store the tool and battery cartridge in locations where the temperature may reach or exceed 50 C (122 F).
7. Do not incinerate the battery cartridge even if it is severely damaged or is completely worn out. The battery cartridge can explode in a fire.
8. Be careful not to drop or strike battery. 9. Do not use a damaged battery.

Tips for maintaining maximum battery life

1. Charge the battery cartridge before completely discharged. Always stop tool operation and charge the battery cartridge when you notice less tool power.
2. Never recharge a fully charged battery cartridge. Overcharging shortens the battery service life.
3. Charge the battery cartridge with room temperature at 10 C – 40 C (50 F – 104 F). Let a hot battery cartridge cool down before charging it.
4. Charge the battery cartridge once in every six months if you do not use it for a long period of time.

PARTS DESCRIPTION

FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION

Installing or removing battery cartridge

CAUTION:

• Always switch off the tool before installing or removing of the battery cartridge.
• Hold the battery cartridge firmly with both hands when installing or removing battery cartridge. Failure to hold the battery cartridge firmly may cause it to slip off your hands and result in damage to the tool and battery cartridge and a personal injury.
• Be careful not to have your thumb and fingers pinched when closing the battery hood.

Unfasten the buckle on the both side of the tool, and open the battery hood. To remove the battery cartridge, slide it from the tool while sliding the button on the front of the cartridge. To install the battery cartridge, align the tongue on the battery cartridge with the groove in the housing and slip it into place. Insert it all the way until it locks in place with a little click. If you can see the red indicator on the upper side of the button, it is not locked completely. Close the battery hood, and fasten the buckle. This tool can equip up to two battery cartridges. You can install one or two batteries. The battery can be installed on either side of the slot.

⚠ CAUTION: · Do not install the battery cartridge forcibly. If the cartridge does not slide in easily, it is not being inserted correctly.

NOTE: If you install two batteries, you can choose which battery you are going to use by flipping the battery selector switch.
Battery protection system Lithium-ion batteries are equipped with a protection system. This system automatically cuts off power to the tool to extend battery life. The tool will automatically stop during operation if the tool and/or battery are placed under one of the following conditions: · Overloaded:
The tool is operated in a manner that causes it to draw an abnormally high current. In this situation, release the switch trigger on the tool and stop the application that caused the tool to become overloaded. Then pull the switch trigger again to restart. If the tool does not start, the battery is overheated. In this situation, let the battery cool before pulling the switch trigger again. · Low battery voltage: The remaining battery capacity is too low and the tool will not operate. In this situation, remove and recharge the battery.
Battery remaining capacity indicator (only for models with Battery BL3622A) Battery BL3622A is equipped with the battery remaining capacity indicator.

1. Indicator lamps
2. CHECK button

Press the CHECK button to indicate the battery remaining capacity. The indicator lamps will then light for approx. three seconds.

• When only the lowermost indicator lamp (next to the “E”) blinks, or when none of the indicator lamps light, the battery capacity has run out, so the tool does not operate. In these cases, charge the battery or replace the empty battery with a fully charged one.
• When two or more indicator lamps do not light even after charging is complete, the battery has reached the end of its service life.
• When the upper two and lower two indicator lamps light alternately, the battery may have malfunctioned. Contact your local Makita authorized service center.

NOTE:

• The indicated capacity may be lower than the actual level during use or immediately after using the tool.
• Depending on the conditions of use and the ambient temperature, the indication may differ slightly from the actual capacity.

Battery converters (optional accessory)
WARNING: · Before installing or removing the battery converters
BCV01/BCV02, remove the lock key.
BCV01 (optional accessory)
WARNING:

• When using the BCV01, be sure to use the holder (optional accessory) to retain its cord. Failure to use the holder leaves the cord loose. This may cause the cord to be entangled by the blade, resulting in damage to the tool and a personal serious injury.
• When using the BCV01, never attach it to any part of your body. Attaching the BCV01 to any part of your body may cause a serious injury.

Hook the battery converter BCV01 onto installation section of the handle.
Holder (optional accessory)
When using the BCV01, be sure to use the holder (optional accessory) to retain its cord.

Fit the holder (optional accessory) in the hole on the left side of the handle from the operator’s view. And then push the cord into the holder so that the cord tension is not too loose. Make sure the cord is secured with the cord holder.

Open out the battery hood and then slide all the way and click the product mounting adapter of the BCV01 into the battery port 1.

Bend the cord of the battery converter BCV01 over the product attachment section. Then run the cord of the BCV01 through the slit in the lower housing and close the battery hood.

To remove the BCV01, follow the installation procedure in reverse.

BCV02 (optional accessory)

Open the battery hood and click in the BCV02 into the battery port. Close the battery hood. To remove the BCV02, press on the hook of the BCV02 and withdraw it with both hands.

Indication lamp
WARNING:

• Do not use the battery selection switch during the operation.
• After flipping the battery selection switch, the main switch is turned off. To start the tool, the operator needs to press the main switch.

You can switch the battery by flipping the battery selection switch when the tool is equipped two batteries. (The indication lamps shows the status No.1 or No.6.) If the tool is equipped one battery, flip the battery button to chose one side which the battery is equipped. · If the tool is equipped one battery and you switch to a battery port in which no battery cartridge is mounted, the indication lamps shows the status No.2 or No.5. The warning lamp lights up when a problem occurs, and the tool is automatically switched off about 10 seconds after the warning lamp has lighted. The indication of the warning lamp means as follows.

• Lighting-up-red: There are two possibility why the red lamp lights up.

  • The motor is overheated. (The indication lamp shows the status No. 3.) Turn off the main switch, and restart the tool after the motor cools down. ·
  • The battery capacity is low. (The indication lamp shows the status No.2 or No.5.) Turn off the main switch, and recharge the battery cartridge.

• Blinking red: The blade becomes overloaded by getting stuck because of digging too deep, or clogged up by weeds or stone. (The indication lamp display shows the status No.4.) Switch off the tool by pressing the main switch, lift the blade by holding the handle, and check whether a obstacle blocks the blade.
  CAUTION:

• Always switch off the tool and remove the battery cartridge before removing the obstacle.

• Do not forcibly rotate the blade, or hit it with a hammer, the tool may be damaged. If there is a obstacle stuck on the blade, remove it carefully. Turn on the main switch, and check the red light is off.

Power switch action
WARNING: · Before inserting the battery cartridge in the
tool, always check to see that the switch lever actuates properly and returns to the original position when released. Operating a tool with a switch that does not actuate properly can lead to loss of control and serious personal injury.
NOTE: · The motor does not start if the motor is overloaded.
In that case, change the depth of cultivation much shallower. · The tool does not start without pressing the lock-off button even if the switch lever is pulled. This tool equips the lock key to prevent children from accidentally starting up the tool. The lock key locates under the battery hood. Insert the lock key before you switch on the tool. The tool does not start up when the lock key is pulled out.

To switch on the tool, press the main switch. One of the indication lamp lights up when you switch on the tool. To switch off the tool, press the main switch again. To prevent the tool from unintentional starting, a lock-off button is provided. To start the blades’ rotating, depress the lock-off button and then pull the switch lever. Release the switch lever to stop.

Drag bar
The drag bar adjust the depth of the cultivation. The drag bar also prevents sudden uncontrollable move of the tool. You can change the depth of the cultivation by changing the position of the drag bar.

CAUTION: · Always be sure that the transport wheel is in the transporting position before you adjust the drag bar. 1. Remove the stopper which holds the drag bar. 2. Adjust the position of the drag bar, then hold the
position with the stopper. Positioning guide · Deep cultivation – A · Middle depth cultivation – B · Shallow cultivation – C · Transport position – D
NOTE: · If the field is solid and the tool advances too fast, set
the drag bar at the deep cultivation position – A. If the field is soft and the blade sinks in the field, set the drag bar at the shallow cultivation position – C. · When you transport the tool, place the drag bar at transport position – D.

ASSEMBLY

⚠ WARNING: · Always be sure that the tool is switched off and battery cartridge is removed before carrying out any work on the tool. Failure to switch off and remove the battery cartridge may result in serious personal injury from accidental start-up. · Never start the tool unless it is completely assembled. Operation of the tool in a partially assembled state may result in serious personal injury from accidental start-up.
Installing the drag bar and stopper
To install the drag bar with stopper, refer to the section titled “Drag bar” in FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION.

Setting the lock key

To set the lock key, refer to the section titled “Power switch action” in FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION.
Assembling and adjusting the angle of the handle
CAUTION:

• Always perform the adjusting on the flat surface to avoid accidents.
• Always be sure that the transport wheel is in the transporting position before you adjust the angle of the handle.
• Always hold the handle while adjusting, or the handle may fall on person and cause injuries.
• When adjusting the angle of the handle, be careful not to have your thumb and fingers pinched between the handle and the frame.

To assemble the handle on the equipment, put the corn spring over the handle locking knob and firmly screw them into the handle piercing it through one of the three handle-retaining-shaft holes. At this time, put the corn spring over the handle locking knob so that the swollen surface of the corn spring faces the handle locking knob. Make sure that the handle is secured after assembling it. You can adjust the angle of the handle from three angles. Hold the handle by one hand, and then turn and remove the handle locking knob. Choose the favorable angle from one of the three holes, and return the handle locking knob and tighten it firmly.
CAUTION: Always be sure that the handle locking knob is tightened firmly, or the handle may fall on you and cause injuries.

OPERATION

Starting forward
WARNING: · Make sure that you hold the handle firmly
before starting the tool. When the field is solid, the tool runs forward suddenly because the blade does not dig enough into the field, and may cause injuries. Push down the handle and place the drag bar into the field to cultivate. Control the handle up and down, and adjust the depth of the drag bar in accordance with solidity of the field. You can dig deeper when you push down the handle more and place the drag bar deeper. The tool moves faster and lighter when you lift the handle and pull the drag bar out from the field. The tool stops when you release the switch lever.

Changing the tilling width
WARNING: · Always be sure that the tool is switched off and battery cartridge is removed before carrying out any work on the tool. Failure to switch off and remove the battery cartridge may result in serious personal injury from accidental start-up. · Do not forget to lock the outer blade by lock pin and snap pin when you attach it.

The blade can be separated in accordance with the width for cultivation. To cultivate narrow area, you can remove both outer side blades. To remove the outer right side blade, pull out the lock pin and snap pin on the right side which locks the outer blade, then remove the outer blade slowly. Mount the lock pin and snap pin on the inner blade in the original position. Take this procedure for the outer left side blade. To attach the outer blades, follow the installation procedure in reverse.

Transporting the tool
WARNING:

• Always be sure that the tool is switched off and battery cartridge is removed before carrying out any work on the tool. Failure to switch off and remove the battery cartridge may result in serious personal injury from accidental start-up.
• To avoid the tool becoming unstable and lose balance, make sure that the drag bar stays on the ground when you change the position of the transport wheel.
• When you pull down transport wheel, make sure the tool keeps balance, or the tool may fall down and cause injuries.
• Be careful not to have your thumb and fingers pinched or sustain a bruise due to an impact by the spring-loaded transport wheel when changing the transport wheel position.

The transport wheel is used when you transport the tool. The position of the wheel can be changed easily by hand. Pull down the transport wheel, place the drag bar at transport position. Push down the handle and lift up the blade, then transport the tool.
NOTE: You can place the drag bar up side down if you feel difficulties to transport the tool. Storing the tool
WARNING: · Always be sure that the tool is switched off and battery cartridge is removed before carrying out any work on the tool. Failure to switch off and remove the battery cartridge may result in serious personal injury from accidental start-up. The handle can be folded for easy carrying and storing.
CAUTION:

• Always perform on the flat floor to avoid accidents.
• Always be sure that the transport wheel is in the transporting position before you bend the handle.
• Always hold the handle while loosening the handle locking knob, or the handle may fall on person and cause injuries.
• When folding the handle, be careful not to have your thumb and fingers pinched between the handle and the frame.

Hold the handle by one hand, and then turn and remove the handle locking knob. Then fold the handle slowly.

NOTICE · Always be sure that any cable is not squeezed between handle and the tool, it may damage the cable. · After folding the handle, temporarily screw lightly the handle locking knob into the original hole to avoid losing it. If you put the tool on a car etc, fold the handle, and hold the front carry handle and the rear carry handle.

MAINTENANCE

WARNING: · Always be sure that the tool is switched off
lock key and battery cartridge are removed from the equipment before storage or attempting to perform inspection or maintenance. Failure to switch off and remove the lock key and the battery cartridge may result in serious personal injury from accidental start-up. NOTICE: Never use gasoline, benzine, thinner, alcohol or the like. Discoloration, deformation or cracks may result.
Checking and replacing the blade

Replace the blades when they are worn to the extent shown in the figure.
NOTE:

• Replace the blades when they are worn to about a half of it. Blade replacement is recommended as early as possible for a good performance with a Makita original blade.

There are two types of blades. Mount a blade in the right direction as shown in the figure.
NOTE:

• Mount the blades symmetrically on right and left sides.
• Mount the lock pin and snap pin in in the right direction shown in the figure so that it does not come off by itself.

MAINTENANCE

1. REMOVE THE LOCK KEY. Store it in a safe place out of the reach of children.
2. Remove mud, straw waste, weeds and the like from the blade and the equipment. Clean your equipment with running water. Do not run or splash water in the electric part area (main switch, lock-off switch, switch lever, motor, indication lamp). After cleaning, wipe the equipment with a dry rag.

NOTE:

• When cleaning the equipment with water, do not fold the handle or do not keep the handle in contact with the ground. Cleaning the equipment with the handle folded or keeping in contact with the ground may cause the switch breakage.
• When using a power washer to clean the equipment, use an adjustable spray-type nozzle with as low power dispersion as possible and keep the equipment more than 2 m (7 ft.) away from the equipment. Failure to do this may cause removal of warning/caution labels, above- mentioned-electrical part damage and flood into the gearbox casing resulting in damage to mechanical parts, such as gears, bearings and the like. Follow warnings, cautions and instructions stated in labels and instruction manual of the power washer for proper use. Failure to do this may cause a personal injury and failure, damage or breakage to the equipment.
• If the battery ports or the area around them should be splashed with water or flooded during cleaning, wipe it off with a rag immediately.
  3. Check all nuts, bolts, knobs, screws, fasteners etc. for tightness.
  4. Inspect moving parts for damage, breakage, and wear. Have repairs made on any damaged or missing parts.

To maintain product SAFETY and RELIABILITY, repairs, any other maintenance or adjustment should be performed by Makita Authorized Service Centers, always using Makita replacement parts.

Warranty Policy
Every Makita tool is thoroughly inspected and tested before leaving the factory. It is warranted to be free of defects from workmanship and materials for the period of ONE YEAR from the date of original purchase. Should any trouble develop during this one year period, return the COMPLETE tool, freight prepaid, to one of Makita’s Factory or Authorized Service Centers. If inspection shows the trouble is caused by defective workmanship or material, Makita will repair (or at our option, replace) without charge.
This Warranty does not apply where:

• repairs have been made or attempted by others:
• repairs are required because of normal wear and tear:
• the tool has been abused, misused or improperly maintained:
• alterations have been made to the tool.
