Planting Instructions

Follow these steps for successful planting:

  1. Spade or rototill the soil to a depth of 12 inches.
  2. Add organic matter to the soil by mixing in a 2-4 inch layer of dehydrated manure, garden compost, shredded leaves, and/or peat moss.
  3. Dig a hole large enough to spread out the roots without bending them. Set the crown with buds about 2-3 inches below the soil surface.

Continuing Care
Follow these care instructions to ensure the health and growth of your plants:

  • Watering: Water the plants well and keep the soil moist but not soggy.
  • Mulching: Apply a 2-4 inch layer of mulch around the plants to promote moisture retention and maintain even soil temperatures.
  • Weeding: Regularly remove weeds from the area around your plants to prevent competition for resources.
  • Grooming: After flowering, remove spent flower stems to maintain an attractive bush-type perennial throughout the summer.
  • Winterizing: In zones 3-7, dig the bulbs in the fall before the first frost. Store them indoors in a cool, dry place for the winter. Let the bulbs dry and cure for a few weeks prior to storing. In zones 8-10, apply a small layer of winter mulch.
