  • With your new Speed Changer you can operate your David Bradley Garden Tractor at any speed desired with full engine power.
  • Your Tractor will have increased pulling power for heavy loads. Low ground speeds for difficult maneuvering with full engine speed and power- excellent with Weed Cutters and Mowers.
  • High transport speeds, start heavy loads at low speed, and advance speed to the desired rate after getting underway – 4 M.P.H. cart hauling.
  • Reduce speed at will when going gets too heavy and engine labors – maintain full engine power.
  • Reverse Attachment drives tractor to rear at .585 of forward speed.
  • Reduced speed assists in controlling the tractor. Drives to the rear with full power on both wheels. Backs up heavy cart loads.
  • Safety control that stops reverse drive as soon as the operator releases pressure on the handle.
  • Stops tractor if the operator should trip or fall. Automatic reversing pawls in wheels, ratchet for easy turning in both forward and reverse drives.
  • Either wheel can be locked into forward or reverse drive or reversed automatically.
  • Finger-actuated lock on each wheel hub. Wheel width can be changed without affecting the reverse mechanism function- full travel.
  • Although the Speed Changer and Reverse Attachment are simple to operate, care for them is very important. Instructions as outlined in this manual should be studied and followed very closely.

SETTING UP INSTRUCTIONS

SPEED CHANGER

Clip all bundling wires and remove parts from the carton. Lay parts out on a clean floor for readiness of assembly.

  1. Remove the regular motor pulley and belt and discard.
  2. (Not illustrated). Adjust engine governor speed to 3600 R.P.M, when governor control is wide open with no load on the engine. This R.P.M. will give 2-1/2 H.P. on the “Super Power” engine and 2 H.P., on the regular engine.
    • NOTE: See Briggs and Stratton or conventional instruction books for method of adjusting governor speed.
  3. Loosen the 4 nuts on the engine base bolts and later model tractors the nut on the hitch bar bolt and the belt adjusting bolt. Also, loosen the straps on the gas tank. Slide engine base towards transmission as far as possible. Retighten the 4 nuts on the engine base.
  4. Assemble the bearing clamp to pivot on the slotted arm side with the concave side of the clamp towards the arm. Assemble clamp U-Bolt around right handle pipe between motor base and trans-mission and through clamp. Assemble nuts on U-Bolt — leave loose. (Figure C)
  5. Assemble bearing clamp over a pivot and left frame pipe between engine base and trade mission. Add 15/16 I.D. washers between single hole arm on the pivot and bearing clamp for correct spacing of bearings with 1/16 maximum end play. Assemble the U-Bolt around the frame pipe through the bearing clamp; leave the nuts loose. (Figure D)
  6. Slide clamps forward until the side of clamps are 1/8° Irom back of the engine base. Tighten U-Bolt nuts on clamps, alternate tightening of nuts so that the bearing will not bind on the shaft during tightening. When U-Bolts are tight, the pivot should turn freely in bearings with 1/16° maximum end play. (Figures C and D)
  7. Assemble spindle and sheave to the outside of slotted pivot arm with two 7/16* x 1° cap acrews and 15/32″ I.D. washers. Head of the cap screw and washer on the inside of the pivot arm. Leave the cap screw sufficiently loose to slide the spindle up. See Figures C and D.
    • NOTE: Gas Line must be reshaped to provide clearance for spindle sheave on some Garden Tractors.
  8. Assemble the long changer belt over the transmission pulley and inner changer sheave. Assem- ble changer motor pulley on the engine shaft and key with the small groove nearest the large groove towards the engine, leave set screw loose. Place a special short changer belt over the outer sheave and small groove of the motor pulley. See Figures C and D. Adjust the motor pulley in and out on the engine shaft until the sheaves are in line. Push the key so that the key end is flush with the inner side of the motor pulley, Tighten the set screw fully tight.
  9. Pull the spindle up in pivot slots until both belts are in tension. Tighten cap screws in the spindle fully tight, see Figure D. Loosen engine base bolts and adjust the engine base forward until both belts are just tight enough to prevent slipping. Belts that are too tight will wear rapidly and shift hard. Tighten engine base bolts.
    • NOTE: Retighten belts as needed by moving the engine base until full travel is used, then move the engine base to the rear and re-adjust the spindle. SHEAVES WILL FLOAT SIDEWAYS ON THE SPINDLE IN OPERATION FOR SELF-ALIGNMENT.
  10. Hook the undrilled end of the control rod through the hole in the handle pivot and push through until the bent portion is beyond the hole. Hold the control rod parallel to the top of the handle pivot and-turn the bent end so that it extends beyond the flat portion of the handle pivot and parallel to the tub abaft. Refer to Figure D.
  11. Assemble the handle over the stub shaft so that the control rod extends through the handle slot and the straight side of the handle is forward. Assemble washer with 17/32″ hole over stub shaft adjacent to handle, Figures C and D.
  12. Assemble flat slotted spring over stub shaft with control rod through a slot in spring and spring holes aligning with handle pivot holes. Assemble U-Bolt over the left handle pipe and through the pivot and spring, Figures C and D. Assemble hex nuts on U-Bolt.
  13. Put control rod (drilled end) through pivot arm hole from outside and cotter, see Figures C and D.
  14. Start engine. Rotate the control bandle to forward most positions (knob towards the engine as far as possible). Pull the handle pivot up on the handle pipe until the inner belt is riding at the outside of the changer sheave and the control rod is in tension. Refer to Figures C and D. Rotate the handle pivot until the control rod rests against the side of clamp. Tighten U-Bolt nuts to retain pivot in position. Pull the knob back, as shown in Figure D; the outer belt should move out to flush with the O.D. of the outer changer sheave. Push kaob forward, the inner belt should come to flush with the O.D. of the inner changer sheave.
    • NOTE: This adjustment must be checked whenever belt adjustment is changed or new belts are assembled.

REVERSE ATTACHMENT

  • A. SPRING TYPE CLUTCH
1. Disengage clutch.
2. Drive out groove pin (support shaft end while driving out pia).
3. Remove the clutch plate.
4. Assemble the adjusting sleeve over the shaft-align the same diameter hole in a sleeve with the shaft hole. Drive in new groove pin provided (support shaft end while driving in pin), vital flush with fat on the sleeve.
5. Coat threads of clutch sheave with a light film of grease and screw sheave on ad-jousting sleeve threads with the clutch face side of the sheave towards the transmission pulley.
  * **NOTE:** Check that the clutch facing is still in place on transmission pulley.
6. Turn clutch sheave until it locks the transmission pulley between the inner clutch plate and the clutch sheave. Turn back clutch sheave exactly 1/2 turn. Choose the set screw hole nearest an unthreaded flat on the adjusting sleeve. Center set screw hole on flat. Insert the set screw and tighten it very tight.
7. Engage the clutch then disengage the clutch–transmission pulley should turn freely.
  • B. BALL TYPE CLUTCH
1. Disengage clutch.
2. Turn the pressure ring so that the hole in the groove is at the top.
3. Remove the set screw from the adjustable clutch plate.
4. Remove the adjustable clutch plate.
  * **NOTE:** Do not allow the transmission pulley to move out from the transmission as balls will fall out of the clutch and require additional disassembly and replacement.

  1. Coat threads of clutch sheave with a light film of grease and screw sheave on adjusting sleeve threads with the clutch face side of sheave towards the transmission pulley.
    • NOTE: Check that the clutch facing is in place on the transmission pulley.
  2. Adjust the ball clutch (See Garden Tractor Instruction Book).
  3. Remove the lower hex head cap screw (3/8° 1-1/2″) and lock the washer from the left rear handle clamp on the transmission. Put lock washer on (3/8 x 1-3/4*) hex head cap screw provided and in at thrower ora aide a bracket let had lagere laser be to to deckeD. Tighten the cap screw.
  4. Remove the right rear handle clamp on the transmission and discard the clamp and bolts. Assemble the idler and bracket to transmission in place of the handle clamp using two 3/8 1-1/2 hex head cap screws, (1) provided, (1) removed from left rear handle clamp, leave cap screws loose. 1/4″ cap screw in bracket should be screwed through the bracket until ap- proximately 1/4° of tip extends through the bracket, Figures C and D. Alternate tightening of 3/8 cap screw to keep friction ring on idler parallel to transmission pulley. Adjust the 1/4″ cap screw so that the ball bearing will just clear the edge of the transmission pulley when the pulley is pulled out as far as possible and the ball bearings are pushed in as far as possible.

Final adjustment:

  1. The back edge of the bracket rests against the pipe. 3/8″ cap screws tight, 1/4″ cap screw must bear against transmission side. Friction ring centered on transmission pulley belt. Friction ring parallel to transmission pulley. The ball bearing will cleared of enemies a plus the pulley is pulled out as far as possible and the ball
  2. Assemble the belt over the clutch sheave and idler sheave. Hook a small hook of belt tension spring in a hole drilled in the top end of the idler arm. Hook a large spring hook in the spring hole in the bracket, Figures C and D. This spring will hold the reverse belt in tension and keep the friction ring free of the transmission pulley belt. Rotate the roller arm forward and check that ball ball-bearing roller is centered on the back of the reverse belt. If rotated forward under force the roller will depress the reverse belt forcing the friction ring into engagement with the back of the transmission pulley belt, affecting the reverse drive. Readjust bracket bolts if necessary.
    • NOTE: Check that the friction ring does not rub on the handle brace rod in either the engaged or disengaged position.
  3. Assemble the control rod (drilled end) through a hole in roller arm with arm finger above con- trol rod and cotter. See Figures C and D. Assemble 13/32 I.D. washer, compression spring, and control knob on control rod in the order listed. Tighten the control knob on rod end by hand. Assemble a clamp shim in the pocket of each control clamp and assemble two control clamps around R.H., handle, and control rod between the washer and the idler assembly. Lasers 3/8 x 1-1/4″ hex head cap screw and nut in clamps as shown in Figures C and D. Slide clamps up handle until roller arm is rotated to the rear and spring is compressed about 1/8*. Align clamps and tighten the bolt just sufficiently to prevent clamps from moving on the handle. Pushing on the control knob should rotate roller until the friction ring engages the back of the transmission pulley belt without fully closing the compression spring. When the koob is released, the roller arm should return to the rearmost position and the friction ring should disengage from the belt; the reverse belt in tension from the spring.
  4. Remove wheels, wheel hubs, and pawl holders from the tractor. Remove hub clamps and pawl holders from wheel hubs. Discard pawl holders pawls and springs. Check reverse pawl units to see that reverse pawl and springs are in location with finger pins on the side of pawls, as shown in Figure C. Insert pawl units in wheel hubs, rotate, and depress pawls to assist in assembly. Assemble hub clamps do not tighten and assemble over clean axles with hub clamp outside.
  5. Reverse fingers must pass through the hole in the friction block freely, see Figures C and D. If necessary bend fingers slightly to align with friction block holes. Care must be main- tained in inserting the axle through the friction wheel bore and pawl holder bore to prevent damage to the friction wheel. Bores must be aligned in the axle assembly. Insert axle keys flush with the clamp end of the pawl holder and maintain the keys flush when changing tread width. Tighten hub clamps.
  6. Remove drilled W.B.H. rivet from R.H. side of cowling, discard and replace with drilledW.B.H. rivet 5/16 x 2-1/2 and bushing 1/4* long between cowling and bracket; record ter. Refer to Figure C.

REVERSE ATTACHMENT

Pawl Locks: Extending beyond the inside of the friction wheel on the pawl unit. (Figures C and D.)

  • A. Automatic Reversing pawls-push pawl lock with finger as close to the axle as it will go.
  • B. To lock the wheel into forward or reverse drive (no automatic reversing) drive the tractor in the direction desired, stop the tractor, do not move the tractor, and push the pawl lock as far from the axle as it will go. The wheel will then drive only in that direction and ratchet in the reverse direction.
    • NOTE: Locking one wheel in the forward drive will ensure manual turning in one direction without lock-up.
  • To Reverse: Forward clutch disengaged. Push the control knob forward until, the tractor drives to the rear. Light pressure only on the knob is required, but if the drive should slip under high loads increase the pressure. To stop — release the control knob.
  • CAUTION: Back up slowly and be sure of footings and grip on tractor handles. The tractor will stop moving if you should fall and release the control knob.
  • CAUTION: It has been found that on a few Garden Tractor transmissions the reverse idler can not be aligned to the center of the clutch pulley because a case rib interferes with proper adjustment of the reverse idler and bracket. If this difficulty is experienced, grind of file off a portion of the rib under the teverse bracket.
