Introduction

The swiss air supplies an approved mask with filtered fresh air. When used correctly, the user is protected from dust and particles in the air they breathe.

Safety instructions

Please read these operating instructions carefully before using the swiss air. Incorrect use can endanger life and health and invalidate all warranty and liability claims against optrel.

Warning notices / protection restrictions and risks

The swiss air (PAPR) does not protect against gaseous substances. Before starting work, assemble the swiss air and turn it on. You may only safely enter a danger zone after switching on the swiss air. If the swiss air malfunctions, leave the danger zone immediately. As soon as the battery alarm (acoustic signal) is activated, you must leave the danger area immediately and charge or replace the battery. As soon as the airflow alarm is activated (acoustic signal), leave the danger zone immediately and replace the filter.
The protection factor can be reduced if the swiss air is used in environments with strong winds.
In environments with a very high level of particle contamination, a negative pressure can develop in the mask when you inhale. This can impair the protective effect. In this case, do not remove the mask until you are out of the hazardous area. When removing the mask, take all necessary precautions to avoid breathing in any dust or contaminated material that may have accumulated on the outside of the mask. Never immerse the swiss air or battery in water as this can damage the swiss air. Prevent water from entering the swiss air during cleaning. Used filters cannot be cleaned or reprocessed. Attempts to clean the filter with compressed air or water can damage the filter. Do not short circuit the battery. This can cause serious damage.
The swiss air (PAPR) must not be used:

  • in flammable or potentially explosive areas,
  • if the oxygen content in the air is too low (Europe: <17%, Australia: <19%) or if the toxin concentration is so high that a higher protection class than TH3P (Europe and Australia) is required,
  • outside the temperature range described in the technical data
  • in environments in which there is an immediate danger to health and life.

WARNING

  • Your employer (or you yourself, if you do not have an employer) is responsible for ensuring that the swiss air is suitable for the user’s use.

  • optrel cannot predict what will happen to the swiss air in any potential environment.
Materials can be chemically attacked when exposed to the wrong environment and can exhibit excessive corrosion or other forms of damage. Ingress or penetration of gases, liquids, or particles into the materials can be excessive. Extreme temperatures can lead to thermal deterioration. Any of these things or a combination of them could create conditions where the swiss air could not provide adequate protection and could be dangerous.

  • Before entering a hazardous environment with the swiss air, you must ensure that the swiss air can reliably protect you from the hazards. If necessary, consult a certified safety professional or industrial hygienist.

  • All persons using the swiss air must be informed of its limitations. We cannot be held responsible for property damage, personal injury or death in which environmental factors play a role.

  • Do not use the swiss air if there is anything between the mask and your face (e.g. hair, headscarf, headgear, etc.). This condition prevents a good seal and can allow contaminants to leak into the helmet. The product can be used if you have a beard and does not require a face adjustment test.

  • Do not use the swiss air in environments in which the pollutant concentration is unknown or in which there is an immediate danger to life or health (IDLH)

IDLH atmospheres are defined as:

a. Those that the wearer could not breathe for a short time.
b. The ones that the wearer could not escape without the help of a swiss air.
c. Those who have an immediate or delayed adverse health impact.

  • NEVER use the swiss air without an optrel particle filter.

  • Do not use the swiss air if the ambient conditions can cause the mask to come off or slip.

  • The swiss air does not protect against gases or vapors. It is only used to protect against
    particle contamination.

  • Return to a non-contaminated area immediately if:
    a. You taste or smell an unknown contaminant or if your eyes, nose or throat become irritated.
    b. Breathing becomes difficult.
    c. The air you breathe becomes uncomfortably warm.
    d. You feel nauseous or dizzy.
    e. You notice a loss or decrease in airflow.
    f. The mask moves, slips, or does not fit well.
    g. You are tired

  • The swiss air does not protect any exposed areas of the body. Some contaminants can be absorbed directly through the skin, while other exposed areas can irritate.

  • The swiss air does not protect against harmful noises. Always wear suitable hearing protection.

  • The swiss air does not provide additional oxygen. Do not use the swiss air in environments with less than 17vol% (UK) / 19 vol% (EU) oxygen.

  • The swiss air must not be used underwater, for fumigation, for indoor fire-fighting, when blasting radiation or in areas in which long periods of high heat or flames could affect the swiss air.

  • The swiss air and accessories must not be used in environments that may contain contaminant concentrations above the lower explosion level (LEL).

  • The swiss air reduces the inhalation of contaminants, but does not prevent it.
Some sensitive people can experience health problems from exposure to tiny amounts of contamination. The swiss air does not prevent health problems for these people.

  • If you use or modify any components other than those listed in this manual or those approved by optrel, all warranties and liability of optrel will be void.

  • Sensitive persons may react strongly to chemicals even when exposed to concentrations that are far below the accepted health values, such as B. the OSHA permissible exposure limit (PEL), the ACGIH limit value (TLV) or the exposure limit values recommended by NIOSH (REL). DO NOT use the swiss air if you have been sensitized from previous exposure or believe you may be sensitive or allergic to chemicals (e.g. isocyanates, latex, etc.) until you get approval from a doctor.

  • Always read and follow the instructions in the safety data sheet for chemicals in the work area.

  • Do not use the product if you already have a skin condition (such as folliculitis or vitiligo) before you have received approval from a doctor.

  • The swiss air must be worn and used in accordance with optrel’s instructions.
Do not leave out any part of the swiss air or omit any mandatory step in the instructions.

  • No respirator system can provide complete protection from all conditions. Use extreme caution in an emergency.

  • Users should only clean and service the swiss air in accordance with optrel’s instructions. Accessories not provided by optrel can affect performance.

  • Discontinue use if skin irritation or discoloration occurs.

  • The swiss air may not provide adequate protection if improperly used, which could result in serious injury, serious illness, or death.

  • Before use, this manual must be read and understood, or the swiss air, its functions and use must be explained by a specialist.

  • Do not use the swiss air if it has been exposed in a contaminated environment, as contaminants will build up inside the mask and may be inhaled when the mask is on.

  • When routinely used, the swiss air must be checked before and after each use.

  • If the warnings are not observed, your health may not be protected!
If you have any questions about the specific application, use, or suitability of the swiss air, please contact optrel Customer Service.
The swiss air can be used in 1mm of rain per minute, however it is not recommended to use the swiss air in heavy rain.

Warranty and liability

Optrel will repair or replace the product as required if a defect in material or workmanship occurs within 24 months (battery 6 months) from the date of purchase, provided that the product has been used in accordance with the instructions in the user manual. The warranty is void if the serial number has been changed, removed or made illegible or if the product has been intentionally damaged, misused, opened or modified. The warranty and liability also expire in the event of improper use, the use of non-original spare parts or inadequate maintenance. The warranty only applies to the repair or replacement of defective parts. Under no circumstances will optrel be liable for general failure or consequential damage.

Expected life

The swiss air has no expiration date. The swiss air can be used as long as there is no visible damage, unusual noise or malfunction. It is recommended to clean the mask with lukewarm water after use. The swiss air can only be repaired by the manufacturer!

Scope of application

The swiss air protection system is a Powered Air Purifying Respirator (PAPR) designed to protect against dust and particles. This system is TH3P certified according to the European standard EN 12941 and TH3P certified according to the Australian standard AS / NZS 1716. The swiss air is used to support the breathing process. This makes breathing easier and users do not get tired as quickly as with a passive filtering system.
The electronic flow control system monitors the swiss air and ensures a constant air flow of at least 100 L / min. The effective operating time of the swiss air with a fully charged battery depends on the filter condition and environmental factors (see table “Technical specifications”).

Before use:

  • Carefully remove the packaging.
  • Charge the battery fully before using it for the first time.
Inspection table: Check whether the swiss air corresponds to the scope of delivery and is not damaged. If damage is found or a part is missing, contact your optrel dealer immediately. Never use a damaged or incomplete swiss air. Please examine the following components:

Installation

Before each use, make sure that the swiss air is in perfect working order and proceed as follows:

  1. Make sure that the spark protection grill as well as the main and prefilter are properly inserted and that the filter release lever is firmly engaged (the cover must click into place when closed) (p. III / c8). Note: When used in the medical field, the spark protection and the pre-filter may be omitted for reasons of hygiene.

  2. Check the air hose and the air connection for damage (holes, cracks, cuts, etc.).
Connect the mask to the air hose by pressing the both connectors together until it clicks into place.

  3. Switch on the swiss air by pressing the On / Off button for approx. 2 seconds (p. III / c1). During the switch-on phase, all LEDs on the control panel (if connected) light up (4 LEDs for the battery indicator and 10 LEDs for the filter level indicator) and an acoustic alarm (3 beeps) sounds. The swiss air is then ready for use (p. IV).

  4. The swiss air carries out an additional self-test during the switch-on phase to ensure that the swiss air generates a sufficient air flow over 100 L / min. When the red filter LED goes out after the approx. 3 second switch-on phase, an air flow of at least 100 L / min is achieved. With the help of a built-in flow meter, the swiss air constantly monitors the air flow throughout operation and keeps it above 100 L / min.

  5. If a signal tone sounds with 5 short beeps, please check the setting on the control panel: switch off the system on the control unit and then switch it on again.

  6. If no swiss air control panel is connected, the air volume can be changed by briefly pressing (less than a second) the ON/OFF switch. Each short press changes the air volume setting from Flow I to II; from II to III and from III to I. The number of beeps indicates the current setting (level).

  7. As described above, the swiss air has a visible and acoustic alarm for low battery capacity as well as missing, clogged or incorrectly inserted filters. In the event of an alarm, leave the danger area immediately.
Make sure the low airflow / filter clogging alarm is working by simulating low airflow as follows:
With the swiss air switched on, remove the hose from the swiss air and press the heel of your hand onto the end of the air output. The motor then accelerates automatically to compensate for the low air flow. Keep pressing the heel of your hand firmly on the end of the hose to seal it tightly. After a while, the swiss air emits an acoustic alarm and the red filter LED (if the control panel is connected) lights up.
An alarm in the event of a missing filter is only triggered if the mask is not connected. To stop the alarm, press the On/Off button for approx. 3 seconds and connect the mask to the hose.

  8. Make sure that the mask is undamaged.

  9. Switch the swiss air on.

  10. Check that air is flowing into the mask.

  11. Strap the swiss air with the harness unit to your back.

  12. Put on the mask.

  13. When working with flying sparks or spatter, the mask and face must be additionally protected (e.g. with a clearmaxx for grinding work or optrel welding helmet for welding work)
Damaged parts (hose, mask, swiss air) must be replaced immediately BEFORE use of the swiss air.

During operation

Adjusting the harness size: Put the harness on (p. I / a1-a11) and adjust the size so that the blower unit sits comfortably on your shoulders.
Inserting the battery: Insert the battery into the holder on the swiss air until the lock engages (see p. III, Fig. c1).
Removing and charging the battery: Lift the release lever on the battery slightly and slide the battery towards the top and remove the battery (see p. III / c9). Then connect the battery to the charger (p. III / c10). The charging process is indicated by the illuminated LED on the battery. When charging is complete, the LED lights up green and the trickle charge mode is activated. Make sure that the voltage in the socket corresponds to the voltage indicated on the charger.

WARNING

  • We recommend charging the battery with the supplied charger. If another charger is used, it must meet the requirements in the “Technical specifications” table.

  • The optrel charger is intended for indoor use only and must not be used outdoors.
Do not charge the battery below 0° C or above 45 ° C. Do not charge the battery near combustible materials such as wood, paper and furniture.

  • Charging the battery must be done in a safe, non-hazardous location. Do not charge or store the battery near heat sources, in sunlight, near hot equipment or equipment with strong electromagnetic radiation.

  • Do not immerse the battery in water. Short-term exposure of the battery to water is acceptable, provided the lithium-ion cells inside remain dry.

  • Do not disassemble or modify the battery. The batteries contain safety and protective devices that, if damaged, may cause the battery to generate heat, explode, or ignite.
Failure to comply with these warnings can result in serious physical injury, serious illness or death.

ATTENTION

  • Note the temperature recommendations from optrel for charging and storage.
Charging at lower or higher temperatures leads to a reduction in capacity and reduces the service life of the battery.

  • Avoid damaging or tearing the cells.

  • If the battery is damaged, swollen, leaking electrolyte, or becomes unusually hot while charging, discontinue use immediately and store the battery in a fire-resistant container until it can be recycled. Do not leave the battery on the charger for more than 70 hours.
Battery status display: See page IV (d1-d6) Setting the air flow: The blower has three air flow levels: 100/115/130 L / min. To change the airflow level, press the On / Off button and cycle through the various levels until the desired level is reached (S. III / c2) or use the dial on the connected control panel (S. IV / d1).
Replace main filter and prefilter: If a filter alarm is issued (audible / visual with control panel connected), the prefilter must be replaced (p. III / c4-c8). Please monitor the time between filter alarms. This becomes shorter after every replacement of the prefilter. If you have the impression that the change intervals are becoming too short, we recommend changing the main filter and the prefilter (p. III / c4-c8)

Alarm functions

Filter alarm: If the filter clogging alarm is activated, you will hear an acoustic signal with an interval of 0.5s (0.25s on, 0.25s off) and the LEDs light up red when the control panel is connected. When operating without a control panel, the swiss air switches to the next lower level if level II or III is set in order to achieve the air flow. The following signal tones can then be heard: 10x beeps (warning tone that the level is changed) and 2x beeps (level II is set) or 1x beep (level I is set). If you want to change the prefilter and the main filter, press the On / Off button for 2 seconds to switch off the fresh air system. You can now change the filters.
Battery alarm: If the battery alarm is activated, you will hear an acoustic signal with an interval of 3.0s (1.5s on, 1.5s off), and the LEDs will light up red if the control panel is connected. An acoustic signal is emitted every second and the swiss air can be used for approx. 15 minutes.

Storage

The swiss air and accessories must be stored in a dry place. Protect them from sunlight, high temperatures, hydrocarbons and solvent fumes.

Maintenance

Check the fresh air system regularly according to these operating instructions. Check the mask and hose for holes, tears, or other damage and make sure that the parts are properly assembled. Do not use the system until all worn or damaged parts have been replaced.

Recommended maintenance schedule
