Introduction

A blower filter unit supplies an approved mask with filtered fresh air. When used correctly, the user is protected from dust and particles in the air they breathe.

Safety instructions

Please read these operating instructions carefully before using the device. Incorrect use can endanger life and health and invalidate all warranty and liability claims against optrel.

Warning notices / protection restrictions and risks

This blower filter unit (PAPR) does not protect against gaseous substances. Before starting work, assemble the device and turn it on. You may only safely enter a danger zone after switching on the device. If the fan malfunctions, leave the danger zone immediately. As soon as the battery alarm (acoustic signal) is activated, you must leave the danger area immediately and charge or replace the battery. As soon as the airflow alarm is activated (acoustic signal), leave the danger zone immediately and replace the filter.
The protective function may be impaired in strong winds from the side or from behind. In environments with a very high level of particle contamination, a negative pressure can develop in the mask when you inhale. This can impair the protective effect. In  this case, do not remove the mask switch from the fan until you are out of the hazardous area.
When removing the mask, take all necessary precautions to avoid breathing in any dustor contaminated material that may have accumulated on the outside of the mask. Never immerse the fan or battery in water as this can damage the device. Prevent water from entering the device during cleaning. Used filters cannot be cleaned or reprocessed.
Attempts to clean the filter with compressed air or water can damage the filter. Do not short circuit the battery. This can cause serious damage.
The blower filter unit (PAPR) must not be used:
– in flammable or potentially explosive areas,
– if the oxygen content in the air is too low (Europe: <17%, Australia: <19%) or if the toxin concentration is so high that a higher protection class than TH3P (Europe and Australia) is required,
– at temperatures below -5 ° C or above +55 ° C, – in environments in which there is an immediate danger to health and life.

Scope of application

The respiratory protection system is a blower filter system (PAPR) to protect against dust and particles. This system is TH3P certified according to the European standard EN 12941 and TH3P certified according to the Australian standard AS / NZS 1716. The respiratory protection system is used to support the breathing process. This makes it easier to breathe in and users don’t get tired as quickly as with a passive filtering system. The electronic flow control system monitors the fan and ensures a constant air flow of at least 100 L / min. The effective operating time of the respiratory protection system with a fully charged battery depends on the filter condition and environmental factors (see table “Technical specifications”).

Before putting into service

  • Carefully remove the packaging
  • Charge the battery fully before using it for the first time.
Inspection table: Check whether the device corresponds to the scope of delivery and is not damaged. If damage is found or a part is missing, contact your optrel dealer immediately. Never use a damaged or incomplete respiratory protection system.
Please take a close look at the following components:

Installation

Before each use, make sure that the respiratory protection system is in perfect working order and proceed as follows:

  1. Make sure that the spark arrestor as well as the main and prefilter are properly inserted and that the filter release lever is firmly engaged (the cover must click into place when closed) (p. III / c8). Note: When used in the medical field, the spark protection grille and the pre-filter may be omitted for reasons of hygiene.

  2. Check the air hose and the air connection for damage (holes, cracks, cuts, etc.).
Connect the mask to the air tube by pressing the tube onto the counterpart until it clicks into place.

  3. Switch on the respiratory protection system by pressing the On / Off button for approx. 2 seconds (p. III / c1). During the switch-on phase, all LEDs on the control panel (if connected) light up (4 LEDs for the battery indicator and 10 LEDs  for the filter level indicator) and an acoustic alarm (3 beeps) sounds. The respiratory protection system is then ready for use (p. IV).

  4. In addition, the respiratory protection system carries out a self-test during  the switch-on phase to ensure that the device generates a sufficient air flow over 100 L / min. When the red filter LED goes out after the approx. 3 second switch-on phase, an air flow of at least 100 L / min is achieved. With the help of a built-in flow meter, the respiratory protection system constantly monitors the air flow throughout operation and keeps it above 100 L / min.

  5. If a signal tone sounds with 5 short beeps, please check the setting on the control panel: switch off the system on the control unit and then switch it on again.

  6. If no swiss air control panel is connected, the air volume can be changed by briefly pressing (less than a second) the main switch. Each short press changes the air volume setting from Flow I to II; changed from II to III and from III to I. The number of beeps indicates the current setting (level).

  7. As described above, the respiratory protection system has a visible and acoustic alarm for low battery capacity as well as missing, clogged or incorrectly inserted filters. In the event of an alarm, leave the danger area immediately.
Make sure the low airflow / filter clogging alarm is working by simulating low airflow as follows.
With the respiratory protection system switched on, remove the hose from the mask and press the heel of your hand onto the end of the hose. The motor then accelerates automatically to compensate for the low air flow. Keep pressing the heel of your hand firmly on the end of the hose to seal it tightly. After a while, the device emits an acoustic alarm and the red filter LED (if the control panel is connected) lights up.
An alarm in the event of a missing filter is only triggered as long as the device is not attracted.

  8. To stop the alarm, press the On / Off button for approximately 3 seconds and reconnect the mask to the hose.

  9. Make sure that the mask is undamaged, put it on and strap the fresh airsystem with the carrying unit to your back.

  10. Start the fresh air system and make sure that the air is circulating in the mask.

  11. Make sure that the mask is undamaged, put it on and strap the fresh air system with the carrying unit to your back.

  12. Start the fresh air system and make sure that the air is circulating in the mask.

  13. When working with flying sparks or sweat spatter, the mask and face must be additionally protected (e.g. with a clearmaxx for grinding work or optrel welding helmet for welding work)
Damaged parts (hose, mask, device) must be replaced immediately BEFORE commissioning.

During operation

Adjusting the carrying unit size: Put the carrying unit on (p. I / a1-a11) and adjust the size so that the blower unit sits comfortably on your shoulders.
Inserting the battery: The battery must be inserted into the corresponding guide on the right underside of the fresh air system. Push the battery forwards until it clicks into place with an audible click (p. III / c11).
Removing and charging the battery: Pull back the release lever on the battery and slide the battery on the guide completely out of the fan unit (p. III / c9). Then connect the battery to the charger (p. III / c10). The charging process is indicated by the yellow LED on the charger. When the charging process is complete, the LED lights up green and the trickle charge mode is activated. Make sure that the voltage in the wall socket matches the voltage indicated on the charger.
WARNING

  • optrel lithium-ion batteries may only be charged with an optrel charger.
Using other chargers could cause explosions, which could result in personal injury or death. If another charger is used, it must meet the requirements in the “Technical specifications” table.

  • The optrel charger is only intended for indoor use and must not be exposed to external elements. Do not charge the battery below 0 ° C or above 45 ° C. Do not charge the battery near flammable materials such as wood, paper and furniture.

  • The battery must be charged in a safe, safe place. Do not charge or store the battery near a welding machine.

  • Never expose the lithium-ion cells to water and do not allow them to get wet.
Accidental, short-term exposure to water on the battery is acceptable, provided the lithium-ion cells remain dry.

  • Do not disassemble or modify the battery. The batteries contain safety and protection devices which, if damaged, can cause the batteries to generate heat, explode or ignite.

WARNING

  • Do not expose the battery to direct sunlight, use or store it near sources of heat or electric arcs.
  • Failure to comply with these warnings can result in serious physical injury, serious illness or death.

ATTENTION

  • Note the temperature recommendations from optrel for charging and storage.
Charging at lower or higher temperatures leads to a reduction in capacity and reduces the service life of the battery.

  • Avoid damaging or tearing the cells.

  • If the battery is damaged, swollen, leaking electrolyte, or becomes unusually hot while charging, discontinue use immediately and store the battery in a fire resistant container until it can be recycled.

Do not leave the battery on the charger for more than 70 hours. Battery status display: See page IV (d1-d6) Setting the air flow: The blower has three air flow levels: 100/115/130 L / min. To change the airflow level, press the On / Off button and cycle through the various levels until the desired level is reached (S. III / c2) or use the wheel on the connected control panel (S. IV / d1).
Replace main filter and prefilter: If a filter alarm is issued (audible / visual with control panel connected), the prefilter must be replaced (p. III / c4-c8). Please monitor the time between filter alarms. This becomes shorter after every replacement of the prefilter. If you have the impression that the change intervals are becoming too short, we recommend changing the main filter and the pre-filter (p. III / c4-c8)

Alarm functions

Filter alarm: If the filter clogging alarm is activated, you will hear an acoustic signal with an interval of 0.5s (0.25s on, 0.25s off) and the LEDs light up red when the control panel is connected. When operating without a control panel, the device switches to the next lower level if level II or III is set in order to achieve the air flow. The following signal tones can then be heard: 10x beeps (warning tone that the level is changed) and 2x beeps (level II is set) or 1x beep (level I is set). If you want to change the prefilter and the main filter, press the On / Off button for 2 seconds to switch off the fresh air system. You can now change the filters.
Battery alarm: If the battery alarm is activated, you will hear an acoustic signal with an interval of 3.0s (1.5s on, 1.5s off), and the LEDs light up red when the control panel is connected. An acoustic signal is emitted every second and the device can be used for approx. 30 minutes.

Storage

The fresh air system and accessories must be stored in a dry place. Protect them from sunlight, high temperatures, hydrocarbons and solvent fumes.
