Battery

WARNING Do not puncture batteries or throw them in fire as they may explode. Do not attempt to recharge non-rechargeable batteries (alkaline).
Dispose of batteries in accordance with local regulations. Keep batteries away from children.

  1. The battery symbol is displayed when the batteries need to be replaced (battery voltage < ± 5 V). Open the battery compartment and remove the old batteries.
  2. Insert 1 x 9 V battery. Faulty installation can permanently damage the device.
  3. Remove the batteries if the device is not to be used for some time.

WARNING
Remove the batteries if you are no longer using the device or if the device is left unused for an extended period of time.
Remove used batteries promptly.

Operation

Attach a small strip of tape to the target surface. Press the MEAS to switch on the tachometer. Select whether to measure the RPMs (RPM) or the revolutions (REV) with the MODE button. Point the tachometer at the strip of tape and hold the MEAS button pressed.
The indicator should appear on the display when you point the beam at the strip of tape.

Memory Button (MEM)

The last measured RPM value is automatically stored in the memory.
Refer to the illustration on page 3 of this manual.
Three values are stored in the memory: Press the MEM button to display the maximum value, the minimum value and the last measured value respectively.

Measuring Tips

Reflective Tape (Velleman DTO-RS/10, optional)

Cut a square of tape of ± 1 cm² and attach it to the target surface.

  • The piece of tape should never cover more than half of the target area.
  • A target surface that is reflective of its own accord should be painted black or covered with black tape prior to applying the tape.
  • Make sure the target surface is smooth and clean when you apply the tape.
Measuring Low RPMs

It is fairly easy to measure fast speeds. When measuring extremely low rpm’s you would do well to apply several squares of tape to the target surface. You can then divide the displayed value by the number of squares.
Also note that this technique makes for more precise measurements as the measuring error is now also divided by the number of squares of tape.

Cleaning and Maintenance

  • The IR sensor is the most delicate part of the device and it shall be kept clean at all times. To do this, only use a soft cloth or cotton bud with a little water or medical alcohol.
  • Allow the lens to fully dry before using the device.
  • Wipe the other parts of the device regularly with a moist, lint-free cloth. Do not use alcohol or solvents.
  • Do not submerge the device in water or any other liquid.
  • There are no user-serviceable parts. Contact your dealer for spare parts if necessary.
  • The device shall be stored between –20° C and +65° C (–4° F to +149° F).
