Intended use
The KL 300 LED cold light source is intended for use in industrial and laboratory settings 1 . Cold light sources are used to illuminate objects in stereomicroscopy. The visible and intense light from the cold light source is guided to the object via light guides. Only SCHOTT light guides and SCHOTT accessories ensure proper function, safety and optimum light output.
Safety information
Please read and follow these instructions carefully. Ensure that every
operator of the device has quick access to these operating instructions.
The instrument’s safety cannot be guaranteed if the instructions are not
followed.
The manufacturer is not liable for any damage caused by non-observance of
these operating instructions.
- Operate the light source only in dry conditions and not in hazardous areas.
- Operate the cold light source only with the voltage specified on the information label.
- Never look directly into the light emission from the light source or the light guide during operation (risk of eye injuries)! The KL 300 LED emits visible light of high intensity (according to the EN 62471:2008 standard, risk class 2).
- Never cover the open light guide receptacle or the light guide output (fire hazard)!
- Never cover the open light guide receptacle or the light guide outlet with your hand or other parts of your body (risk of burns)!
- When illuminating heat-sensitive or flammable light-absorbing objects, pay particular attention to selecting the light guide spacing and intensity so that no thermal damage occurs to the object. Since light-absorbing materials have the physical property of converting incident light into heat, damage can occur to heat-sensitive or flammable light-absorbing materials.
- All light guide outputs must always be at a safe distance – at least 10 cm – from heat-sensitive or flammable light-absorbing materials when the light source is switched on (avoid possible fire hazard).
- Reduce the brightness and duration of illumination of biological tissue to avoid unnecessary exposure of biological tissue to visible light illumination.
- Safe disconnection from the power supply is only achieved by pulling out the plug.
- Do not open or disassemble the device. Refrain from making technical modifications to the device.
- Allow the light guide to cool down before replacing it. We recommend that you switch off the light source for about five minutes before replacing the light guide.
Operation
2.1 Assembly
The KL 300 LED can be mounted on all common microscopes or swing-arm stands.
Adapters are included with the light source or are available from the dealers
or manufacturer.
Insert the mounting adapter (A) into the receptacle on the underside of the
light source as far as it will go and tighten the two mounting screws (B)
using an Allen key (3 mm). You can now clamp the light source to the
microscope or swing-arm stand using the mounting adapter. Keep in mind, you
may have to remove the microscope body or the carrier beforehand and mount it
again afterwards.
When using flexible light guides, the KL 300 LED can be laid flat on the work
surface, without a mounting adapter.
2.2 Light guide connection
To install the light guide, push the light guide into the socket as far as
it will go. To ensure a tight fit and optimum illumination, the light guide
must snap into place. When inserting light guides with a guide pin, make sure
that it is aligned into one of the two slots.
To remove the light guide, pull it out of the light guide holder.
2.3 Power connection
Insert the hollow plug of the enclosed power supply unit into the socket on
the light source. Ensure that the KL 300 LED cold light source is operated
only in the specified voltage range and with the enclosed power supply unit.
2.4 Start-up procedure
You can switch the KL 300 LED on and off by pressing the main switch. If
the device is switched on, the blue control lamp lights up. To disconnect the
power supply, pull out the plug!
2.5 Light intensity setting
Adjust the light intensity by turning the light intensity control. The
scale is divided into six brightness levels, from 0 to 5. The highest light
intensity is achieved at full deflection in position 5.
Attention: In the control position 0 the device is not switched off,
therefore the blue control lamp lights up. To switch off the KL 300 LED, press
the main switch.
Maintenance
Your KL 300 LED is maintenance-free.
Use a soft dry cloth or commercially available plastic cleaning cloths for
external cleaning of the device.
Troubleshooting
If you are unable to remedy the problem using the measures described below, please contact your specialist dealer or the nearest SCHOTT agency. Further repairs must be carried out by authorized customer service.
Type of fault | Possible cause | Remedy |
---|---|---|
1. Lamp out | • Instrument not switched on |
• Plug not in socket
• No mains electricity voltage| • Switch instrument on
• Plug in socket
• Check mains voltage
2. Light intensity dropping| • Electronics overheated| • Switch off
instrument. Ensure adequate cooling, switch on again after prolonged cooling
time.
