Intended use

The KL 1600 LED cold light source is intended for use in industrial and laboratory settings 1 . Cold light sources are used to illuminate objects in stereomicroscopy. The visible and intense light from the cold light source is guided to the object via light guides. Only SCHOTT light guides and SCHOTT accessories ensure proper function, safety and optimum light output.

Safety information
Please read and follow these instructions carefully. Ensure that every operator of the device has quick access to these operating instructions.
The instrument’s safety cannot be guaranteed if the instructions are not followed. The manufacturer is not liable for any damage caused by non- observance of these operating instructions.

  • Operate the light source only in dry conditions and not in hazardous areas.
  • When connecting the device, ensure a safe connection.
  • Operate the cold light source only with the voltage specified on the information label.
  • Never look directly into the light emission from the light source or the light guide during operation (risk of eye injuries)! The KL 1600 LED emits visible light of high intensity (according to the EN 62471:2008 standard, risk class 2).
  • Never cover the open light guide receptacle or the light guide output (fire hazard)!
  • Never cover the open light guide receptacle or the light guide outlet with your hand or other parts of your body (risk of burns)!

You can obtain an individual spectrum of your light source at info.microscopy@schott.com

  • When illuminating heat-sensitive or flammable light-absorbing objects, pay particular attention to selecting the light guide spacing and intensity so that no thermal damage occurs to the object. Since light-absorbing materials have the physical property of converting incident light into heat, damage can occur to heat-sensitive or flammable light-absorbing materials.
  • All light guide outputs must always be at a safe distance – at least 10 cm – from heat-sensitive or flammable light-absorbing materials when the light source is switched on (avoid possible fire hazard).
  • Reduce the brightness and duration of illumination of biological tissue to avoid unnecessary exposure of biological tissue to visible light illumination.
  • Keep all ventilation openings free. In case of insufficient cooling, an integrated thermal switch will regulate the light intensity of the light source.
  • Safe disconnection from the power supply is only achieved by pulling out the plug.
  • Do not open or disassemble the device. Refrain from making technical modifications to the device.
  • Allow the filter slider and insert filter to cool down before removing the insert filter. The filter slider must always be in a detent position when operating the light source (see “Filter slide”).
  • Allow the light guide to cool down before replacing it. We recommend that you switch off the light source for about five minutes before replacing the light guide.

Operation

2.1 Light guide connection
First, open the locking screw of the light guide holder by turning it counterclockwise. Then push the light guide in as far as it will go and tighten the locking screw again by turning it clockwise.
When inserting light guides with a guide pin, make sure that it aligns in one of the two guide slots.

2.2 Power connection
Insert the hollow plug of the enclosed power supply unit into the socket on the light source.

Ensure that the KL 1600 LED cold light source is operated only in the specified voltage range and with the enclosed power supply unit. Plug the three-pole power cable of type H05VV-F3G0.75 (available as an accessory) into the connection socket of the enclosed   owner supply unit provided for this purpose. When replacing the power cord, use only power cords of the same type.

2.3 Start-up procedure
You can switch the KL 1600 LED on and off by pressing the main switch. If the device is switched on, the green control lamp light up. To disconnect the power supply, pull out the plug!
2.4 Light intensity setting
Adjust the light intensity by turning the light intensity control. The scale is divided into six brightness levels, from 0 to 5.
Attention: The device is not switched off in the 0 control position, therefore the green control lamp lights up. To switch off the KL 1600 LED, press the power switch.

2.5 Filter slide
The KL 1600 LED has a filter slide that can be equipped with an insert filter. Various filters are available as accessories.
When inserting the filter slide into the cold light source, there are two detent positions which are signaled by a clicking sound. The filter slide must be in one of the two end positions or the detent position when operating the light source. If the filter slide is in an intermediate position, it may damage the light source.

Insert filter
Make sure that the filter slide has cooled down before inserting a filter. Wear lint-free gloves to load the filter slide.

  1. Pull out the filter slide completely and turn it so that the labeling is legible.

  2. Insert the insert filter from the top right behind the two retaining lugsmarked in black.

  3. Click the insert filter firmly into place by applying slight pressure at the top right. The filter now lies flat in the holder.

Remove filter

To remove, bend the retaining clip slightly to the left and remove the filter.
If you want to operate the light source without a filter for a short time, pull the slider out only to the first detent point. In this position, the filter is still in the light source, but no longer in the beam path.

Maintenance

Your KL 1600 LED is maintenance-free.
Use a soft dry cloth or commercially available plastic cleaning cloths for external cleaning of the device.

Troubleshooting

If you are unable to rectify the problem using the measures described below, please contact your specialist dealer or the nearest SCHOTT agency.

Type of fault Possible cause Remedy
1. Lamp out • Instrument not switched on

• Plug not in socket
• No mains electricity voltage| • Switch instrument on
• Plug in socket
