Operation

SymbolsRisk of damage!

  • Make sure to connect the red cable to positive terminal (+) and the black cable to negative terminal (–). A reverse polarity connection (positive to negative) blows the non-replaceable internal circuit fuse in the product and could permanently damage the product.

  • Loose connectors result in an excessive voltage drop and may result in overheated wires and melted insulation.

  • Disconnect the ring connectors of the cables (N/O) from the battery whenever the engine is switched off for extended periods of time. In some vehicles, the power does not turn off after the engine has been switched off. If the product is left connected, the vehicle battery might become discharged or damaged.

  • The product works best with a battery that is in good condition and fully charged.

  • Position the product on a flat and stable surface in a dry and well-ventilated location.

Checking wattage of the devices to be connected

SymbolsRisk of damage!

  • Make sure that the total wattage of the devices to be connected does not exceed the maximum load of the respective outlet. The product automatically shuts down in the event of a power overload.
  • Only use the product with the provided cables.

When the connected device switches on, there is an initial surge of power (i.e. “starting load” or “peak load”). Once started, it requires less power to operate (i.e. “running load”). Always check the starting and running loads of the motorized devices before connecting to the product to prevent overload shutdown.

Inverter loads| The product operates most AC loads within its power rating of 1000 W.
---|---
High surge loads| NOTICE

  • Always check the output of the devices to be connected. When the load exceeds the capabilities of the product, the overload shutdown is triggered.
  • Some induction motors used in freezers, pumps, and other motor‐operated devices require high surge currents to start. The product may not be able to start some of these motors even if their rated current is within the product’s limits.

Trouble loads| Some types of devices are not applicable to connect to the product due to the product’s modified sine wave output:

  • electronics that modulate RF (radio frequency) signals on the
  • AC line;
  • speed controllers found in fans, power tools or kitchen appliances;
  • chargers for small rechargeable batteries; and
  • metal-halide lamps.

See the table below for the estimated wattage required for different devices.
Check the actual wattage requirements on the rating label and in the operating instructions of devices to be used.

Device Watts required Device Watts required
Portable music player 1-5 W Soldering gun 132 W
Cell phone 10 W Finishing sander 176 W
Digital camera 15 W 27″ television 200 W
Handheld gaming device 20 W 3/8″ drill 220 W
Portable worklight 25 W 12″ 3-speed fan 231 W
Portable DVD player 30 W Halogen spotlight 250 W
Battery charger 35 W 20″ TV/DVD player combo 300 W
Stereo system 50 W Food processor 320 W
Laptop computer 75 W Small appliances 400 W+
13″ television 100 W Power tools 400 W+

Take the surge wattage (i.e. starting load) required by electrical motors into consideration as well as the rated wattage (i.e. running load). See below table as example for adding up the total wattage of devices to be powered.

Device Surge (starting) wattage Rated (running) wattage
Light bulb 60 W 60 W
Refrigerator 200 W 100 W
Microwave 1700 W 600 W
Total wattage used 1960 W 760 W

The wattage might not be listed on the devices to be connected. In that
case, calculate the wattage using the equation “VOLTS x AMPERE = WATTS”

  • Formula: 115 Volts x X Amperes = XXX Watts
  • Example: 115 Volts x 5 Amperes = 600 Watts

When the product is switched on without any load connected, it still draws current from the vehicle battery. Always switch the product off after use to avoid discharging the battery.

Tips for maintaining battery condition

  • Vehicle batteries are designed to provide brief periods of very high current needed for engine starting. They are not intended for constant deep discharge.
  • Regularly operating the product from a vehicle’s battery until the low voltage alarm sounds will shorten the battery’s life. The battery operating time depends on:
    • the charge level of the battery,
    • the battery capacity,
    • the amount of power drawn by the devices that are connected to the product.
  • With an average load of about 1000 W connected to the product, it is required to start the vehicle regularly, for example every hour or two, to recharge the vehicle’s battery.
  • Prior to doing so, the product must be disconnected from the power source and must remain disconnected whilst charging is in progress.
  • Consider connecting the product to a separate deep-discharge type of suitable battery if it is expected to run the electrical products for extended periods of time.
