Why the switch from 20 lb box to bag at Chewy.com?

The main reason we made the change from box to bag at Chewy is that our bag (although not perfect) is proven to sustain the rigors of shipping (18lb and 40lb bag Chewy internal customer satisfaction results and studies) much better than our boxes. With Chewy’s company growth, supply chain constraints and automation improvements, they could no longer shrink wrap the boxes so they could reach a customer intact and without leakage. Our only solution was to move to bags or discontinue 20lb altogether at Chewy. The 20lb box is still currently available at other retailers.

What should I do if my kitten or cat is eating the litter?

Kittens may go through a litter tasting stage at 4-5 weeks and we recommend using a non-clumping litter until kittens are at least 8 weeks or older depending upon maturity and breed. Ingesting cat litter and other substances may be a sign of illness in cats and it’s recommended that you see a veterinarian to rule out any medical issues.

Why is my cat is defecating outside of the litter box?

Defecation issues can be difficult to sort out and it can be frustrating to try to stop the behavior.

Simple Solutions

Type of litter, location of the litter box, does the box have a hood or not?
o Typically we don’t recommend having a hood on a cat litter box - cats feel trapped and a hooded box can trap odors that are offensive to a cat.
o Also, we recommend at least two boxes for cats that are not using the litter box to defecate. One box for defecation and one box for urination and do not place the boxes side by side. If the boxes are side by side the cats perceive the boxes as one box - even if you place them in the same room you need to give them some separation.
• Our Cat Attract® and Kitten Attract® are very texture friendly and they do contain a natural herbal attractant that draws the cats to the box by smell.
Another issue with cats not using the box often times is some sort of bowel issue like constipation or a loose stool.
o If a cat is experiencing any of these issues they may avoid the litter box since they can associate the box with something unpleasant.
o It is important to watch your cat’s stool and consult with your veterinarian if you notice anything different.
o Along those lines another thing to keep in mind is that cats take a different stance to defecate than they do to urinate. Older cats and overweight cats then may have difficulty standing in deep litter to defecate. Cats hide pain very well so they may have some discomfort in their lower spine or legs that may hinder them from being able to stand in the litter box.
• Dr. Elsey’s Senior litter can help address this issue in overweight, pregnant and senior cats.
Although there is no hard research to back this up long haired cats often have more issues with using the box to defecate than short haired cats.
o One notion is that they don’t like getting litter and feces on their pant fur and litter in between their toes so they will avoid the litter box to defecate. We always recommend that you have your vet shave the hair around the rear area - it is called a hygiene clip and also clip the hair in between the toes if the hair is really long. This will sometimes solve the problem with a long haired cat.
• Our Dr. Elsey’s Crystal Attract® litter can also be a solution for this problem in that you keep it low in the box like the Senior litter and it does not stick to the cat’s coat.
If it is truly a behavioral issue than the pheromone sprays and plug-ins (like Feliway or Comfort Zone) may help with the stress the cat is experiencing and or talking to your veterinarian about using anti-anxiety drugs.
One other idea I would like to mention that has worked well for some clients. If your cat is defecating right outside the box place a mud tray in front of the box like an extension of the box if you cat begins to go on the tray make is smaller and smaller until the behavior transfers to the box.

Why can’t I use the Ultra Litter Attractant with paper, corn, pine, perfumed, cedar or other litters containing baking soda or deodorizers?

The Ultra Litter Attractant works on a smell premise and to insure its effectiveness, we recommend using it with only unscented, clumping clay litter. Any other scents in natural litters or perfumes can mask the scent and it may not work properly.

Why does the litter look different?

Since our clay litter is a natural product, it can vary in texture and color.

When will I receive my rebate?

While we try and process rebates as soon as possible, it may take up to 8 weeks to receive a check. Making sure all information is legible and correct could speed up the process. Only customers in the US and Canada are eligible. Due to the volume of rebates we receive, please do not email asking about the status of your rebate if it is within 8 weeks of being submitted.

Can I mix a clumping litter with a non-clumping litter?

We do not recommend mixing a non-clumping litter with the clumping clay and it could inhibit the scoopable litter’s ability to clump.

My cat is experiencing hair loss/hives/constipation. Could the litter be the cause of the problem?

That is highly unlikely. It’s best to first contact your vet for a medical review or exam. These symptoms are usually due to some previous condition or illness. If you are not already using an unscented litter we recommend using one while you are trying to figure out other possible causes.

My cat has stopped using the box. What should I do?

We recommend purchasing Cat Attract® and making sure you start with a fresh clean litter box.

Some other things to consider:

The litter box may have a urine/waste odor. We recommend that you completely empty the litter box, clean it with soap and water, and fill it with fresh litter. If the litter box is full of scratches we recommend purchasing a new box and disposing of the old one.
Have there been any major disruptions in the cat household? This can cause stress and rejection. We recommend trying pheromone plug-ins or sprays (like those from Comfort Zone) that release a cat’s natural scent and can reduce stress in the household.
Your cat may not be feeling well. We recommend contacting your vet to make sure there is nothing else going on.

Why does the litter vary in size, color, texture?

While we use the same source for all of our litter, it is taken from different locations of the mine and manufactured at different times. Our clay is a natural mineral, and can therefore vary. Though the color may be different, the product is tested to provide the performance our customers expect.

Can the litter be composted or disposed of in a garden?

Dr. Elsey’s clumping clay litter is not biodegradable and should not be disposed of in the yard or garden whether it has been used or not. Bacteria in cat’s waste can be harmful to other humans and animals. The bacteria in the used litter can cause an illness known as toxoplasmosis that can be particularly harmful to pregnant women or infants if touched or handled.

How often should I completely change the litter in my litter box?

Dr. Elsey’s recommends completely changing the litter in your box every 4 weeks if you are using a clumping clay litter. Be sure to remove the clumps daily and top off with fresh litter to maintain a three-inch level.

For non-clumping litter, we recommend changing the litter box every 7-10 days.

What additives are used in Dr. Elsey’s products? Are they safe?

The additives we use are proprietary, but they are all-natural, non-toxic, and safe. However, if your cat has any allergies or you are concerned, we recommend using one of our other natural unscented products that doesn’t contain any additives.

Is Silica Gel litter safe?

Our silica litters are made from amorphous silica gel, it is safe if inhaled or ingested and does not cause silicosis because it has no crystalline silica. Newborn kittens can breathe or ingest the litter without harm.

I see shiny, clear pieces in my clay litter. What is that?

Quartz is naturally mined and present in all of our clay litters. Some of the pieces are larger than others, but are not harmful.

Do you have a non-clumping litter that contains attractant?

Yes, our line of crystal cat litters contain hydrolyzed herbs and are made with non-clumping silica gel litter.

What makes Dr. Elsey’s Litter clump?

All clumping litters are made from sodium bentonite, a form of clay. Premium scoopables, like ours use 100% sodium bentonite to maximize clumping ability. Some clumping litters blend cheaper clays with bentonite and will break apart in the litter box.

Are clumping litters safe for my cat?

Concerns that bentonite clays will “set-up” in a cat’s stomach are un-founded. Over half of the litters sold today include bentonite clay and have proven safe for cats since their introduction over fifteen years ago. In fact, the convenience of clumping clays have contributed greatly to the growth of cats as pets. In Dr. Elsey’s 25 plus years as a feline only veterinarian, he has never had a case where clumping litters have caused a problem with a cat.

What makes Dr. Elsey’s The Scoopable That Works!

While other litters use bentonite clays, Dr Elsey’s particle size and texture make the difference. Fine grain litters form thin clumps which easily break down in the litter box, and very large particles are difficult for cats to dig in. Our scoopables have the right texture and particle size to create an ideal paw feel for your cat. We call it “dig-a-bility.”

My cat won’t use its litter box, what litter do I use?

Are your litters flushable?

No! DO NOT FLUSH our litters. These litters are designed to form hard clumps. A “flushable” clumping litter is a contradiction. If it dissolves or breaks apart in a toilet, it will break apart in a litter box. A true clumping litter is more convenient for you and better for your cat.
