Product description
PowerFlex is a software-defined storage platform designed to significantly
reduce operational and infrastructure complexity.
It empowers organizations to move faster by delivering flexibility,
elasticity, and simplicity with predictable performance and resiliency at
scale.
The PowerFlex family provides a foundation that combines compute as well as
high performance storage resources in a managed unified fabric. PowerFlex
comes in fully managed flexible deployment options for rack or appliance that
enable Server SAN, HCI, and storage only architectures. PowerFlex can now be
deployed in the public cloud. A Ready Node option is also available. PowerFlex
is ideal for high performance applications and databases, building an open
private cloud, or consolidating resources in heterogeneous environments.
New and changed features

New features for PowerFlex
Learn about the new features introduced in PowerFlex 3.6.0.5 software.
- PowerFlex is now available as a consumption model in the public cloud. PowerFlex 3.6.0.4 is supported on AWS.
- PowerPath 7.4 for Linux now supports PowerFlex devices. PowerPath Migration enabler can be used for data migration across PowerFlex and other PowerPath supported storage array classes.
NOTE : Only PowerFlex SCSI devices are supported. Since PowerFlex devices have only a single path, PowerFlex takes care of load balancing across different SDS.
Important
The following aspects of PowerFlex 3.6.0.5 must be understood before deploying
or upgrading your system:
-
CloudIQ integration
-
Discovering a PowerFlex system in CloudIQ requires the system to be registered with SRS. In the PowerFlex Installer, Maintain tab, ensure that the PowerFlex system is registered with SRS and that Send data to CloudIQ is enabled.
-
After installing a new PowerFlex system with PowerFlex version 3.6, it takes 24 hours until data is available in CloudIQ. Systems upgrading to PowerFlex 3.6 will appear in CloudIQ within an hour of enabling the Send data to CloudIQ option.
-
PowerFlex appliance and rack systems need PowerFlex Manager version “H” in order to be discovered in CloudIQ.
-
Replication enhancements
-
Bi-directional replication between two sites only is supported.
-
See the PowerFlex Sizer for sizing guidelines for correct replication system specifications, including WAN bandwidth sizing. When using the PowerFlex Sizer, take into account existing workload and existing hardware, and the possible need to add additional nodes to enable replication without impacting the current workload.
-
Replication capability has higher I/O overhead, as explained in the v3.6 Getting to Know PowerFlex Guide (Replication section) and the white paper Dell EMC PowerFlex: Introduction to Replication. See these recommendations in order to
size your system correctly, and ensure that you have sufficient existing storage capabilities to enable this ability. -
Network resiliency improvements
-
Proactive network path error detection requires SDC to be at v3.6 or later.
-
Upgrade Paths
-
Upgrade from PowerFlex version 3.0.x and 3.5.x to version 3.6 are supported.
-
Older PowerFlex/VxFlex OS versions must be upgraded to version 3.0.x prior to upgrading to version 3.6.
-
vSphere plug-in End-of-Support-Life
-
The PowerFlex vSphere plug-in continues to be supported with vSphere versions 6.5 and 6.7, however it reaches end-of-support-life when vSphere 6.5 and 6.7 reach end-of-support by VMware.
-
The PowerFlex vSphere plug-in does not support vSphere 7 hyperconverged (HCI) configurations.

Table 2. Fixed issues
Issue number & SR number | Problem summary |
---|
SCI-65334
SR# 134810840
| During non-disruptive upgrade to PowerFlex 3.6, the SDS maintenance mode
takes longer when the MDM returns an incomplete query to the PowerFlex
Gateway.
SCI-68154| The SDC container used supervisord to run and log the diagnostic
message. All the kernels do not support the diagnostic message switch which
caused the supervisord to return the diagnostic messages in an infinite loop
and consume excessive CPU.
SCI-67542 SR# v1007162| Disruptive upgrade occurred on SDC during RCM upgrade.
Deadlock on locking Octet in L2P directory between the L2P Page merges flow.
The L2P split-upgrade flow that is invoked causes a disruptive upgrade due to
SDS IO timing out.
SCI-68153| The SDC-SDS TCP disconnected when the SDS host was hard reset while
establishing the security communication link. The keepalive manager does not
close the socket due to inactivity and remained open indefinitely.
SCI-65052
SR# 133347603
| The SDS disconnected when a large set of data was allowed into the Protected
Maintenance Mode. The MDM delayed the RoleSwitch and created a timeframe which
resulted in an IO error until the SDS responded to all the combs.
SCI-66526 SR# 139180450| During an IO background operation, you must split few
operations to multiple MD pages to fit in the correct size of an FG device. A
new write with an existing background operation leads to an overflow in the MD
buffer space and causes the SDS crash when detected.
SCI-66575| IM scripting “stop process on script failure” does not stop on
failure and the indicator may be overridden. If
validateNoCriticalFailureCommand indicates a failure due to a flag in
criticalCommandFailedArr, the sequence stops at exit-SDS-from-MM since this
command always runs.
SCI-65531 (SR# 135236911)| When you unmap a volume from the latest SDC
version, the volumes remain mapped even if the unmap operation is completed.
SCI-67424 SR# v1005052| SDS decoupled due to panic “ALWAYS_ASSERT IO takes too
long”. Incorrect locking order of L2P Directory octet and octet counters leads
to a deadlock between L2P Page merge flow and QueryCapacityUtilization. This
blocks many IO operations indefinitely until SDS panics due to timeout.
SCI-67007| Execution of sas3ircu triggers SVM crash on PowerEdge 15G-based
hosts. For details, see DTA 199549.
SCI-66906| Tomcat versions 8.5.79 and earlier is exposed to CVE-2022-29885.
PowerFlex Gateway does not use the clustering feature and is not exposed to
the issue.
Issue number & SR number| Problem summary
---|---
SCI-65370| The exclude log collection check box for the SDC log collection was
removed. The check box is restored to exclude and include the node log
collection.
SCI-62416
SR# 119473468
| When running scripts on host feature, the operation logs does not check the script files in nodes.

Supported operating systems
The user documentation contains a list of supported operating systems. For the
most current information, see the Dell EMC Simple Support Matrix (ESSM) at
https://elabnavigator.dell.com/eln/modernHomeSSM, Storage option.
SDC compatibility
By design, the PowerFlex SDC in this release is compatible with previously
released systems that are currently supported (for example, VxFlex OS v3.0.1).
In addition, the PowerFlex system (backend) in this release is backward
compatible with previously released SDC versions that are currently supported.
Some limitations may apply to mixed-version systems, such as:
- Replication is not supported on SDC releases earlier than PowerFlex v3.5.
- The CHAP component authentication feature cannot be enabled unless every MDM, SDC and SDS in the system is at least version 3.5, and conversely, if the feature is enabled, no pre-v3.5 SDCs can be added.
- Fine Granularity Storage Pool-based volumes cannot be mapped to a ScaleIO / VxFlex OS v2.x SDC
- Snapshot Policy management is not available with SDC releases earlier than VxFlex OS v3.0.
Known issues and limitations
