Requirements
Requirements for use of this manual
This manual provides best practices guidance for Honeywell SmartLine
transmitters. This manual refers to the use of STT800, ST800, SMV800, and
ST700 models in process.
Security Considerations
Physical Access Security
To assure security of the Smartline transmitter and the connected processes
the user must provide physical access security to the SmartLine transmitter
(device) as well as any connected networks that are used to communicate with
the device. Without physical access security, other methods for security may
be compromised either by brute force damage or unauthorized modification of
connections, configurations, or even to physical aspects of the process
itself.
Hardware Write Protect
A hardware write-protect jumper is provided on SmartLine transmitter to
disable changes to the configuration or calibration. The hardware write-
protect jumper is located on the SmartLine transmitter communication module.
Access to the hardware write protect jumper requires physical access to the
device and partial disassembly. The behavior of a hardware write-protect
jumper differs between the various communication modules. Consult the
SmartLine Transmitter protocol specific user manuals for more information on
the use of the Hardware Write-Protect Jumper.
Local Display Write protect
A user local display “password” is used to disable changes made to the
device configuration by use of the local display. The “password” is intended
to be used as a “PIN” key lock code in that it is associated with the device
and not a specific user. The “PIN” used on the local keyboard display is
separate from the PIN provided for communication. PIN lockout protection from
the local keyboard display does not inhibit changes by way of communication
interfaces. The hardware jumper will lock out configuration changes regardless
of the local display lockout being disabled.
Communication Write Protect
A write protect “password” code is available on some SmartLine
Communication implementations and is used to provide a write protect “PIN” key
lock code for changes via the communication interface. Although this provides
some protection from unauthorized modifications to configurations, it may be
most useful to avoid accidental changes to a device.
As with the local display write protect PIN code, the communication write-
protect may be shared by multiple users and multiple devices. For security
purposes, the communication write protect cannot by itself be regarded as a
means for user authentication or privileges. In most cases the user(s) must
assume that anyone that has access to the devices connected network interface
may either know or may discover the write protect PIN (password). As such,
the communication PIN should not be used as a method for user authentication
or delegation of privilege. More information on the communication “password”
can be found on the devices communication user’s manual.
Tamper Detection
A tamper detection feature is available as part of the SmartLine
communication firmware. This feature can indicate that an attempt was made to
change the configuration or calibration of the device. This tamper detection
is available as part of the communication protocols and should be monitored
along with configuration changes version and other indications that any change
to the device configuration has been attempted. For more information on tamper
detection refer to the devices protocol specific communication manuals.
Firmware updates
Honeywell may provide firmware updates to the SmartLine Devices to resolve
discovered issues or to provide additional functions. It is not possible to
update the device while connected to a process. The device must be physically
removed from the process and use the Honeywell “Anytime” update tool.
Typically, this is performed by a qualified Honeywell Service technician. The
firmware images are provided by Honeywell from the Honeywell Process Web.
Although there are specific checks for firmware validation per device and
module, it is advised that the technician verifies the source of the image to
be from the Honeywell Process Web site. Anytime a device is removed from
process for firmware update or for any other reason where dismantling the
device is required, the user must verify the device has not been damaged in
anyway, that it is configured and calibrated correctly, and that it is
operating correctly per the intended process use before placing the device
back into service.
Security Assistance
Security must be considered for the specific threats and vulnerability for
each application as well as the environment in which the application is
deployed. Help for understating security issues and defenses can be found at
the Honeywell Cyber Security website: https://www.honeywell.com/en-us

Reporting a security vulnerability
For the purpose of submission, a security vulnerability is defined as a
software defect or weakness that can be exploited to reduce the operational or
security capabilities of the software. Honeywell investigates all reports of
security vulnerabilities affecting Honeywell products and services. To report
a potential security vulnerability against any Honeywell product, please
follow the instructions at:
https://honeywell.com/pages/vulnerabilityreporting.aspx
