How to Use a USB Flash Drive?

On Mac

  • Insert the flash drive into a USB port on your Mac or through a hub connected to your Mac.

  • The USB drive should automatically appear on your desktop. If you cannot see it, follow these steps Open Finder and navigate to Preferences.

  • Under the General tab, ensure that the “External disks” option is checked.

  • To copy files from your Mac to the USB drive, you have two options

    • Drag and drop the files from your Mac directly onto the USB drive. This will create duplicates on the USB drive, while keeping the original files on your computer.
    • Alternatively, you can use the copy and paste function to transfer files from your Mac to the USB drive.

  • The drive should appear in File Explorer (formerly known as Windows Explorer). If you don’t see it, look for it under “This PC” or “My Computer.”

Choosing the File System

  • exFAT: Compatible with both Windows and Mac. Allows for larger file sizes.
  • NTFS: Commonly used in Windows. Supports large file sizes and additional security features.

How to Copy Files Larger Than 4GB onto a USB Drive?

  • If you need to copy files larger than 4GB onto a USB drive, follow these steps
  • If you are using it on Windows ONLY, format the drive as NTFS or exFAT.
  • If you are using it on both Windows and Mac, format the drive as exFAT.
