CHORD M Scaler Upsampling Digital Processor User Guide
CHORD M Scaler Upsampling Digital Processor

Introduction

Welcome to the M Scaler Quick Start Guide. This shortened guide is supplementary to the main manual which should be referred to for full safety and operational information.

Please note that further information on any of the topics below is listed in the full manual.

Connecting your source to the M Scaler

In order for the M Scaler to upscale/upsample your music, you must connect your source to the appropriate M Scaler input; you can connect multiple sources if you wish.
Connecting

Connecting M Scaler to Qutest, Hugo 2, TT 2 or DAVE

To experience the full 768kHz upsampling benefits of the M Scaler, you must connect it in dual data mode to a Chord Electronics DAC using the two BNC cables provided. Plug BNC OUT 1 into BNC IN 1 and BNC OUT 2 into BNC IN 2. If you only plug one BNC cable into the device, you will only experience maximum upsampling of 384kHz. You no longer require your source to be connected to your DAC. If you are connecting M Scaler to Hugo 2, you may use a third-party BNC cable terminated with a 3.5mm TRS jack. This is not supplied. Please refer to the Hugo 2 user manual; Step 03 – Connectivity
Connecting

Connecting M Scaler to a third-party DAC

Connecting M Scaler to a third-party DAC without a supported dual data mode (x2 parallel BNC inputs) will yield maximum upsampling of 384kHz. The maximum upsampling will depend on the highest sample rate that your DAC can recieve. We recommend connecting M Scaler to your DAC via BNC/SPDIF for the maximum possible upsampling of 384kHz, if supported, in this configuration. Connect any output of M Scaler to the corresponding input of your DAC. You no longer require your source to be connected to your DAC.

Connecting the power supply to M Scaler

Connect the supplied power supply (only) to the 15V DC input of M Scaler. Once connected, M Scaler will automatically power ‘on’. M Scaler does not have a power button and will remain ‘on’ until the power supply is disconnected.

Selecting your input

Select the corresponding input colour to the intended input listed below. Press the input button repeatedly to match the colour with the chosen input. Note: with BNC 1 or BNC 2 selected and dual BNC cables successfully connected, M Scaler will automatically select Dual BNC mode; Dual BNC mode cannot be manually selected.

Selecting your upsample rate

You must select the corresponding colour for the upsample rate best suited for your system. Select this by pressing the OP SR (Output sample rate) button. Please view the more in-depth chart on page 31 of the full user manual.

How to avoid latency when watching video

To avoid any latency when watching video, we recommend activating ‘Video Mode’ or ‘Automatic Mode’. This will reduce the number of filter taps, a measure of resolution, and in turn, reduce the latency. With the VIDEO button ‘off’, the video filter will be off. When the button displays as white, the video filter will be ‘on’.

We recommend that when you switch back to music listening, you deactivate ‘Video Mode’. When the button shows as yellow (music playback detected) or cyan (video playback detected) the mode is automatic and will automatically detect whether you are watching a video or listening to music, not requiring manual intervention.

DX buttons

The three DX buttons on the M Scaler (DX OP, DX down and DX up) are currently not in use, they have been implemented for a future product that will pair with the M Scaler. Please leave them off.
