TiLite manufactures a wide variety of wheelchairs to meet the varied needs of
wheelchair users. However, TiLite is not a healthcare advisor and does not
know the needs and medical condition(s) of each user. The selection of a
wheelchair, how it is adjusted, types of options, and accessories used is the
responsibility of the user and a qualified medical professional.
The choice of a wheelchair and setup for safety depends on the following:
- Disability, strength, balance and coordination of the user;
- Hazards of daily use (living and working environment and other places a user is likely to visit);
- Options needed for safety and comfort (anti-tips, positioning belts or other special seating systems, etc.).
Failure to follow all considerations and safety information may result in serious bodily injury.

It is the responsibility of the equipment provider, therapist, and other qualified health care professionals to determine if a seating restraint is required to make sure of the safe operation of this equipment by the user. Serious injury can occur in the event of a fall from a wheelchair.
Important Safety Information, continued
Adjustments to the Wheelchair
- The relative position of the footrest, camber tube, rear seat height, caster, and back support are directly related to the wheelchair’s stability. Any change to one or a combination of these or other adjustments on the wheelchair can cause the wheelchair to decrease in stability. Use extreme caution when using a new seating system or position for the first time.
Navigational Concerns
- DO NOT use an escalator to move the wheelchair between floors. Serious bodily injury may occur.
- DO NOT attempt to ride over curbs or obstacles. Doing so may cause the wheelchair to tip over and cause a fall.
- DO NOT attempt to move up or down an incline that is wet, icy, or covered in an oil film or other slippery surface.
- DO NOT attempt to navigate inclines greater than 9 degrees, or that are too steep to adequately remain in control of the wheelchair.
Accessories, Spare Parts, and General Maintenance
- Periodically, check the overall condition of the wheelchair to make sure it is in good operating condition. Look for loose or broken parts or fasteners, wear or damage to components that alter the functionality and safety of the wheelchair, and any rough edges that may cause injury.
- DO NOT use water-based lubricants on or around the front caster and fork as they can cause damage to the bearings.
- Only install replacement parts that were manufactured by Permobil.
- DO NOT use the wheelchair unless it has the proper tire pressure (p.s.i.). DO NOT overinflate the tires. Failure to follow these warnings may cause the tire to explode and cause harm.
- Replacement of the tire or tube must be performed by an authorized Permobil dealer or qualified technician.
- DO NOT over-tighten hardware attaching any accessories to the frame. This could cause damage to the frame tubing or permanent damage to the threaded fastener or accessory.
- After making any adjustments, always make sure that parts are properly tightened before using the wheelchair.
Cautions
- Exercise caution when transporting the wheelchair up or down stairs with an occupant in the wheelchair. Possible injury to the occupant and/or attendants can occur.
- When operating the wheelchair, take care to avoid getting fingers caught in the spokes of the spinning wheels.
- Use caution while tilting the wheelchair or otherwise lifting the front casters off the ground, as the risk of tipping backwards will increase.
- Use caution while operating the wheelchair on roads, streets or highways.
- Use caution while backing up in the wheelchair.
- Use caution while attempting to reach for objects on the ground, reaching too far forward, or attempting to dress or undress while sitting in the wheelchair, as these activities increase the risk of tipping over.
- Make sure the back support is locked securely in place and all attachment hardware is tight before operating the wheelchair.
- If the wheelchair was configured with quick release axles, make sure they are properly installed and seated prior to operating the wheelchair by attempting to remove the wheel after the quick release axle engages. If the wheel comes off the wheelchair, DO NOT operate the wheelchair until the quick release axles are properly adjusted.
- When transferring from the wheelchair, every precaution should be taken to do so safely and with minimal effort. Speak with a health care team for training on how to properly transfer from the wheelchair. Make sure both wheel locks are engaged to prevent the wheelchair from inadvertently moving backwards.
- Avoid placing full body weight on a single sideguard or fender during a transfer or pressure relief.
- Make sure to keep the wheelchair clean. Promptly clean any mud, sand, grass or other dirt from the wheelchair and allow to dry completely after cleaning. If the chair becomes wet, dry the chair as soon as possible and re-lubricate the caster axles, caster forks, rear wheel hubs and rear wheel axles.
- Make sure that all detachable or small parts are handled with care. Keep small hardware components out of the reach of children and any individuals who have a tendency to place inedible objects in their mouth. Swallowing or inhalation may lead to serious injury or death.
IMMEDIATELY seek emergency medical assistance.
Transportation
The TiLite CR1 has NOT been crash-tested. Wheelchair users MUST transfer into the vehicle’s seat and use the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) vehicle- installed restraint system.

Operation Instructions
Warning : Keep axles and receivers clean and away from dirt and grime, and avoid moisture. If they do get wet, dry the axle and apply a light coating of “dry” silicone or Teflon-based lubricant to prevent rust and provide easy insertion and removal.
Quick Release Axles
-
To attach the wheel, fully press the quick release button and while holding down, insert the axle into the receiver.
Make sure the axle is fully inserted into the receiver and locked into place (quick release button returns to original position) and the wheel does not come out when pulled.
If the button is not fully extending when inserted, the wheel is not locked into place and can fall out of the receiver causing bodily harm or injury. -
To remove the wheel, push down completely on the quick release button and while it is fully pressed, pull the wheel assembly outwards and away from the receiver.
Upholstery Tension Adjustment (Seat and Back)
Seat Upholstery:
- The upholstery is tension adjustable by hook and loop fastener straps. To adjust the tension on the seat upholstery, access the straps underneath the seat and adjust to preference. For optimal wheelchair performance and responsiveness, it is recommended to keep the seat sling tightly fastened to the wheelchair frame.
- To tighten the sling, begin with the seat strap just in front of the center of gravity clamp. Undo the hook and loop fastener strap, pull tightly around the attachment ring and re-secure on the exposed hook and loop fastener of the same strap.
- Continue this same process with the strap behind the clamp. It is best to alternate with consecutive straps in front and back until there are no more straps in the back and then finish the remaining straps, working towards the front. Not following this sequence can potentially allow the front seat straps to be overtightened, affecting the alignment of the wheelchair frame, and causing one of the front caster wheels to float.
Back Upholstery:
- To adjust the tension of the back upholstery, begin by pulling the lower section of the back support pad from the rear side of the wheelchair up towards the top of the back support to expose the adjustment straps(image shown with back already removed).
- Continue removing the back support pad from the front side of the adjustment straps as well until all adjustment straps are exposed and can easily be adjusted. Undo the hook and loop fastener straps and tightener loosen to preference. Be careful not to over-tighten the very top straps as it is possible to pull the vertical back canes too close together which may affect the performance of the folding operation of the back and side guards.
Operation Instructions, continued
Fold Down Back Support
To fold down the back support:
- Push up on the two side guards at the cutout section along the back edge of each side guard, located just below the rear attachment point to the back canes.
- Push the back support forward and the side guards will fold down together at the same time.
Set Up Back Support
To set the back support up for use:
- Pull back on the back crossbar until the back support is completely up.
- Push down on each side guard to lock the back support in place.
Anti-Tips
To install the anti-tips:
1. Press down the exposed button on the end of the anti-tip tube and slide
into the receiver at the bottom of the camber tube vertical strut.
2. Make sure the button of the anti-tip tube pops into the hole on the
receiver and locks it into place.
Wheel Locks (includes brake extension)
The wheel locks on the CR1 come pre-installed but can be adjusted to an
individual’s preference.
To adjust:
- Loosen the adjustment screw on the wheel lock clamp.
- Slide the lock assembly forward (less lock tension) or backwards (more lock tension).
IMPORTANT! The effort required to engage or disengage the wheel lock is
an indication of grip strength against the wheel and the wheel lock’s
performance.
Also, a reduction in lock strength is likely indicates an underinflated tire
with less than optimal tire pressure.
Side Guards
The wheelchair comes with two side guards which are mandatory and cannot be removed as they are a critical frame component.
Positioning Belt
The wheelchair is available with a black nylon, hook and loop fastener adjustable positioning belt. Undo the strap and set the tension as desired.
Cleaning and Disinfecting
**** Caution: Clean the product regularly and when it becomes soiled.
Recommendation: When washing by hand, use room-temperature water.
Wheelchair Frame and Accessories
Cautions :
- DO NOT wash the wheelchair with a pressurized stream of water.
- DO NOT expose the wheelchair to corrosive agents or cleaners.
To Clean : Wipe clean using a damp cloth and mild soap. Wipe until all visible soil has been removed from the wheelchair. Rinse with clean water.
Wipe dry with a clean cloth and then allow to air dry completely.
Sling Seat and Back Upholstery
Caution : DO NOT machine wash or machine dry the sling seat or back
upholstery.
To Clean: Regularly hand wash the sling seat and back upholstery using water
and a mild detergent. While cleaning, carefully check for sagging, rips or
tears and replace if necessary. Allow to air dry completely before using the
wheelchair.
IMPORTANT! After the sling seat is dry, check the tension while seated in
the wheelchair to make sure the sling does not touch the crosstie beneath the
sling seat.

Troubleshooting
Wheelchair drifts to one side|
- Check that all wheels can spin freely and are not difficult to rotate. Repeat for the caster forks.
- On a level surface, check that all four wheels touch at the same time. If one of the caster wheels is floating, take the wheelchair to a qualified equipment provider for adjustment.
---|---
Casters have difficulty rolling|
- Make sure the caster axle area between the inside face of the fork and the caster is free from any blockages or foreign objects which can get wound around the axle. Remove any blockages or foreign objects, like thread or hair, that may be found. The easiest way to do this is to remove the caster from the fork.
- Check the condition of the caster bearings to make sure they are spinning freely and are free from dirt and rust.
- Maintenance intervals can be extended by avoiding rolling through standing water. If casters get wet, dry them off and apply a light coating of “dry” silicone or Teflon-based lubricant. Routinely perform this maintenance to continue the optimal performance of the wheelchair.
Rear wheels aren’t rolling properly|
- Check the tire pressure. The wheelchair will perform the best when the tires are at their optimal level of inflation. If tire pressure is low, add air.
- If a wheel still feels sluggish, check that the rear axles are free and clear of any contaminants and check the wheel bearings to make sure they are spinning freely and are free from dirt and rust. Just like the caster bearings, if exposed to moisture, dry them off and apply a light coating of “dry” silicone or Teflon-based lubricant.
- Check the alignment of the wheels to make sure the toeing is correct and that the wheels are not rubbing against the wheelchair or side guards. This can be an indication of an off-center camber tube, or that one of the axle clamps has moved and the camber tube is no longer perpendicular to the wheelchair frame.
Wheel locks don’t engage properly| Check that the tires are inflated to the proper pressure. If tire pressure is low, fill to the max recommended pressure setting on the tire sidewall.
- The wheel lock may have slid inside the wheel lock clamp. If so, loosen the adjustment screw and slide the lock forward or backwards for the desired tension, and retighten the screw to the recommended torque setting.
- Check that the lock is perpendicular to the tire and hasn’t rotated in the clamp, preventing full engagement with the tire.
Seat sling tension is not adequate|
- If the seat sling tension needs to be adjusted, follow the instructions in the Operation Instructions section.
Back does not fold down|
- Check that everything at the back pivot points and along the side guard tracks are free and clear of obstructions.
- Make sure the side guards are parallel with the back (perpendicular to the ground) and do not have any side to side movement. If the side guards are noticeable loose, check for loose or missing hardware.
Push handles are loose|
- Push handles should be securely fastened to the back vertical tubes. If any movement in the handle becomes noticeable, please check that the attachment hardware is properly tightened.
Side guard movement|
- Unusual sounds or excessive movement in the back or side guards can be an indicator of loose hardware. Check and tighten any loose hardware.
- Make sure the side guards are securely attached to the wheelchair frame and back.
