Instructions for use

**Introduction

**

Thank you for purchasing this piece of Cole-Parmer equipment. To get the best performance from the equipment and for your own safety, please read these instructions carefully before use. Before discarding the packaging check that all parts are present and correct.

This equipment is designed to operate under the following conditions:

  • For indoor use only
  • Use in a well ventilated area
  • Ambient temperature range +10ºC to +40ºC
  • Altitude to 2000m
  • Relative humidity not exceeding 80%
  • Mains supply fluctuation not exceeding 10%
  • Over-voltage category II IEC60364-4-443
  • Pollution degree 2

If the equipment is not used in the manner described in this manual and with accessories other than those recommended by Antylia Scientific, the protection provided may be impaired.

Electrical Installation

THIS EQUIPMENT MUST BE EARTHED

Before connection please ensure that the line supply corresponds to that shown on the rating plate.

  • Model: SIM-200D-M
  • Supply requirements: 230V, 50 Hz
  • Power: 250W

The model is supplied with two mains leads fitted with IEC plugs for connection to the instrument. One has a U.K. 3 pin plug and the other has a 2 pin “Shuko” plug for connection to the mains. Choose the lead appropriate for your electrical installation and discard the other. Should neither lead be suitable, take the lead with the U.K. plug and replace the plug with a suitable alternative. This involves cutting off the moulded plug, preparing the cable and connecting to the re-wireable plug in accordance with its instructions.

THIS OPERATION SHOULD ONLY BE UNDERTAKEN BY A QUALIFIED ELECTRICIAN

NOTE : Refer to the equipment’s rating plate to ensure that the plug and fusing are suitable for the voltage and wattage stated

The wires in the mains cable are coloured as follows:

  • BROWN : LIVE
  • BLUE : NEUTRAL
  • GREEN / YELLOW : EARTH

The instrument is fitted with an IEC socket at the rear of the instrument for connection of the mains lead. The appropriate mains lead should be connected BEFORE connection to the mains supply.

Should the mains lead need replacement, a cable of 1mm2 of harmonised code H05W-F connected to an IEC320 plug should be used.

IF IN DOUBT CONSULT A QUALIFIED ELECTRICIAN

Safety Advice Before Use

  • Do not attempt to lift or carry the unit alone.
  • Never move or carry the unit while it is in use or connected to the mains supply
  • Do not use in a hazardous atmosphere or with hazardous materials.
  • Ensure that the load is balanced.•Do not attempt to stop movement by hand.
  • In the case of mains interruption, the shaker function will not restart but the heating function will continue on restoration of the power.
  • In the case of mechanical interruption (e.g. motor stall), the unit will continue operating on removal of interruption.

Some parts of the incubator may become hot duringuse. These are clearly marked with warning labels and include the heated base and steel parts of the water reservoirs. Avoid touching these parts when the incubator is running.

General Description

The Cole-Parmer SIM-200D-M microtitre plate shaker incubator is ideal for mixing and aerating samples in microtitre plates or micro centrifuge tubes under accurate temperature controlled conditions. High speed combined with a tiny orbit creates the vibrational shaking action required for very small sample volumes.

The retractable platform allows for easy access when loading or unloading samples. This has a non-slip mat to hold microtitre plates in place and micro centrifuge tubes of various sizes can be held in purpose built accessory racks.

The incubator chamber is fitted with two water reservoirs which allow the humidity of the chamber to be increased, thus reducing the possibility of sample loss due to evaporation over longer incubation periods.

Operation

  1. Place the unit on a firm, level, non-slip surface ensuring that there is sufficient free space on all sides without coming into contact with anything during use.
  2. Connect to the electricity supply.

Setting the temperature

  1. Using the top control panel, switch the temperature control unit ON by pressing the control knob.
  2. Hold down the “press to set” button and turn the control knob until the correct temperature is displayed.
  3. Release the “press to set” button. The incubator will then begin to heat to the set temperature. The actual temperature inside the chamber will be displayed on the screen.

Note : The minimum set temperature is 10ºC and the maximum is 60ºC, however the unit will only control to a minimum of 7ºC above the ambient temperature e.g. the minimum temperature at 10 ºC ambient is 17 ºC.

Increasing the chamber humidity
For longer incubations, it may be advantageous to increase the humidity in the chamber to reduce the amount of sample evaporation.

  1. Open the door and slide out, or partially slide out the water reservoirs situated in the top of the chamber.
  2. Fill each reservoir to the ‘max fill’ mark with distilled or deionised This should be sufficient to humidify the chamber to 80-90% humidity for 72h at 37ºC.
  3. Carefully replace the reservoirs in the holders and push back to stop.

Note : When using the water reservoirs for a long period of incubation, it is possible that small quantities of water may be found on the bottom of the chamber. This should not affect the safety or performance of the product but regular drying with a cloth is recommended.

Loading the samples

  1. Lift the release knob on the front of the platform and draw the platform out of the incubator towards
  2. Place the microtitre plates or tube racks on the platform and push down gently onto the non-slip mat to help with

Note: Up to 4 standard or deep-well microtitre plates or two micro tube racks can be accommodated.

  1. Gently push the platform back into the incubator until it locks in place and close the Failure to lock the platform in place before operating the unit can result in damage to the unit.

Setting the speed

  1. Using the keypad at the base of the instrument, switch the unit ON by pressing the control

Note : When using the water reservoirs for a long period of incubation, it is possible that small quantities of water may be found on the bottom of the chamber.

This should not affect the safety or performance of the product but regular drying with a cloth is recommended.

Mode button Start/stop button

  1. Press the mode button until a red dot shows in the display below “rpm”. The display will show the last set
  2. Adjust the speed by turning the control knob. The minimum speed is 250rpm and the maximum speed is
  3. Once the correct speed is displayed, press the start/stop button to begin motion.
  4. The speed can be adjusted at any time without halting the unit by turning the control knob.
  5. To stop the unit at any time, press the start/stop button.

Note : If the door is opened while the unit is in motion  a warning alert will sound and the motion will stop. The word “door” will also be momentarily displayed on the screen. The heater will remain ON. Close the door to continue.

Setting the timer

  1. Press the mode button until a red dot shows in the display below “time”. The display will show three horizontal lines or the last set
  2. For continuous operation, set the display to the three horizontal
  3. Select the required countdown time by turning the control knob. The time will be displayed first in minutes and seconds, next in hours and minutes, then in days and hours up to a maximum of 9
  4. If the platform is already in motion, countdown will start immediately. Otherwise, press the start/stop button to begin countdown; motion will also start at the set
  5. During operation, motion and countdown can be paused at any time by pressing the start/ stop Press the start/stop button again to continue.
  6. The timer can be adjusted at any time without halting the unit by turning the control
  7. When the timer reaches zero, the unit will automatically stop motion and an alert will

Note : If the door is opened while the unit is in motion a warning alert will sound and the motion and countdown will stop. The word “door” will also be momentarily displayed on the screen. The heater will remain ON. Close the door to continue and the countdown will resume  from the point at which it was stopped.
