Product Information

The Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) is a system that consists of two functions:

  1. BSM (Blind Spot Monitor) function: To assist the driver while being passed by another vehicle.
  2. RCTA (Rear-Cross Traffic Alert) function: To assist the driver when backing up.

The BSM function uses radars to detect vehicles traveling in the adjacent lane, in an area that is usually not reflected in the side mirror and rearview mirror (the blind spot). It advises the driver about the existence of adjacent vehicles.

The BSM system has the following indicators and alerts:

  • Side mirror indicators:
    • BSM function: When a vehicle is detected in the blind spot, the side mirror indicator lights up if the turn signal lever is not operated. It blinks if the turn signal lever is operated.
    • RCTA function: When an adjacent vehicle approaches from the right or left rear of the vehicle, both side mirror indicators will blink, and a buzzer sound can be heard under the steering wheel.
  • Buzzer (RCTA function only): When an adjacent vehicle approaches from the right or left rear of the vehicle, a buzzer sound can be heard under the steering wheel.

Product Usage Instructions

Introduction

The BSM system consists of two functions: BSM (Blind Spot Monitor) and RCTA (Rear-Cross Traffic Alert).

The BSM function assists the driver while being passed by another vehicle. The RCTA function assists the driver when backing up.

Turning BSM ON

  1. Set the Ignition to ON by pressing the ‘ENGINE START STOP’ button twice.
  2. The side mirror indicators will light up.
  3. A single Power ON beep warning will be produced by the buzzer.
  4. The side mirror indicators will then turn OFF.
  5. BSM is now in Standby mode.

Section 2.0: Function

The BSM function uses radars to detect vehicles traveling in the adjacent lane, in the blind spot area that is not reflected in the side mirror and rearview mirror. It advises the driver about the existence of adjacent vehicles.

The detection areas for the BSM function are as follows:

  1. Approximately 3 meters from the side of the vehicle.
  2. Approximately 6 meters from the rear bumper.
  • Please refer to the user manual for more details and precautions regarding the use of the Blind Spot Monitor system.
  • Please read this manual for proper operation and keep it for future reference.

Important Notice:

  • Cautions regarding the use of the system
  • BSM system is only to assist driver and not meant to replace any alertness or safe driving skill of the driver. Driver is solely responsible for his/her driving behavior even the vehicle is equipped with BSM (Blind Spot Monitor) system.
  • Do not overly rely on the BSM function by ignoring checking both side mirrors and rear view mirror while changing lane or reversing.
  • In certain condition, the BSM system might not work properly. Hence please go through this manual thoroughly to avoid any unnecessary confusion that may arise.
  • Please read this manual for proper operation and keep it for future reference.

Introduction

The Blind Spot Monitor is a system that consisted in 2 functions:

BSM (Blind Spot Monitor) function

  • To assist driver while being passed by other vehicle

RCTA (Rear-Cross Traffic Alert) function

  1. Side mirror indicators
    • BSM function
    • When a vehicle is detected in the blind spot, the side mirror indicator lights up if the turn signal lever is not operated. And the side mirror indicator blinks if the turn signal lever is operated.
    • RCTA function
    • When adjacent vehicle approaching from the right or left rear of the vehicle, both side mirror indicators will blink and buzzer sound can be heard under the steering wheel.
  2. Buzzer (RCTA function only)
    • When adjacent vehicle approaching from the right or left rear of the vehicle, buzzer sound can be heard under the steering wheel.

Turning BSM ON

  1. Set the Ignition to ON by pressing the ‘ENGINE START STOP’ button 1 twice.
  2. The side mirror indicators will light up.
  3. Buzzer will produce a single Power ON beep warning.
  4. The side mirror indicators will then turn OFF.
  5. BSM is now in Standby mode.

The side mirror indicators visibility:

  • When under strong sunlight, the side mirror indicator may be hard to be noticed.

Buzzer sound:

  • Buzzer sound may be difficult to be heard if loud noises such as high audio volume is set.

Scenario that abnormality could happens to Blind Spot Monitor:

  • Ice, snow, or mud may be attached to the rear bumper around the radars. The system should return to normal operation after removing the ice,
  • sorn omwu,d from the rear bumper.
  • Additionally, the radars might not operate normally when driving in extremely hot or cold environments.

Function

BSM function (Blind Spot Monitor)

  • The BSM function uses radars to detect vehicles that are traveling on adjacent lane in the area that is usually not reflected in the side mirror and rear view miror (the blind spot), and advises the driver on existence of adjacent vehicles.

BSM function detection areas

  • The areas that vehicles can be detected in are shown as below:

The range of the detection area:

  1. Approximately 3 Meter from the side of vehicle.
  2. Approximately 6 Meter from the rear bumper.
  3. Approaching vehicles
  4. Detection areas

RCTA (Rear-Cross Traffic Alert) function

The RCTA functions when your vehicle is in reverse. It can detects other vehicles approaching from the right or left rear of the vehicle. It uses radars to alert the driver on approaching vehicle from rear through blinking the outside rear view mirror indicators and sounding a buzzer.

Precaution

Radar

  • Blind Spot Monitor radars are installed on both left and right side of the vehicle rear bumper respectively. Observe the following photo to know the location of BSM radars.
  • Keep radar and its surrounding area on the bumper clean at all times. If radar or its surrounding area on the rear bumper is dirty or covered with mud, the Blind Spot Monitor may behaves abnormally.
  • In this situation, clear the dirt or mud and drive the vehicle with the operation conditions of the BSM function for approximately 60 minutes. If the BSM is still not functioning, please have the vehicle inspected by your Toyota dealer.
  • Do not subject radar or its surrounding area on the rear bumper to a strong impact.
  • If the radar is shifted, the system may malfunction and adjacent vehicle might not be detected accurately.
  • if above condition occurred, please have your vehicle inspected by your Toyota dealer.
  • Do not remove radar by yourself.
  • Do not attach accessories or stickers (contained metal material) to the radar or surrounding area on the rear bumper.
  • Do not modify the radar or surrounding area on the bumper.

BSM (Blind Spot Monitor)

  • The BSM function is operational when
  • Vehicle speed is greater than approximately 16 km/h.

The BSM function will detect a vehicle when:

  • A vehicle in an adjacent lane overtakes your vehicle.
  • Another vehicle enters the detection area when it changes lanes.
  • Conditions under which the BSM will not detect a vehicle:
  • The BSM function is not designed to detect the following types of vehicles and/or objects:
  • Small motorcycles, bicycles, pedestrians, etc.
  • Vehicles traveling in the opposite direction.
  • Guard rail, walls, signs, parked vehicles or stationary objects.
  • Following vehicles that are in the same lane.
  • Vehicles that driving 2 lanes away from your vehicle.

Below condition might causes BSM not working properly:

  • When the radar is misaligned after subjected to strong impact.
  • During bad weather such as heavy rain, fog, storm, etc.
  • When dirt or mud is attached to the rear bumper.
  • When driving on a road with large amount of standing water.
  • When there is a significant difference in speed between your vehicle and the vehicle that enters the detection area.
  • When a vehicle is in the detection area from a stop and remains in the detection area as your vehicle accelerates.
  • When driving up or down consecutive steep inclines, such as hills, a dip in the road, etc.
  • When driving on roads with sharp bends, consecutive curves, or uneven surface.
  • When the vehicle that enters the detection area is traveling at about the same speed as your vehicle.
  • When there is a significant difference in height between your vehicle and the vehicle that enters the detection area.
  • Condition below might causes BSM to trigger unnecessarily detection on vehicles or object:
  • When the sensor is misaligned after subjected to strong impact.
  • When your vehicle is too close to the adjacent vehicle, object, guardrail or wall.
  • When vehicle lanes are narrow and a vehicle driving 2 lanes across from your vehicle enters the detection area
  • When items such as a bicycle carrier are installed on the rear of the vehicle.

RCTA (Rear-Cross Traffic Alert)

  • The RCTA function is operational when
  • The shift lever is in R.
  • Vehicle speed is less than approximately 6 km/h.
  • Approaching vehicle speed is between approximately 10 km/h and 30 km/h.

Conditions under which the RCTA function will not detect a vehicle:

  • Small motorcycles, bicycles, pedestrians, etc.
  • Vehicles approaching from directly behind.
  • Guard rail, walls, signs, parked vehicles or stationary objects.
  • Vehicles that moving away from your vehicle.
  • Vehicles approaching from the parking spaces next to your vehicle.
  • Vehicles backing up in the parking space next to your vehicle.

Conditions under which the RCTA may not function correctly:

  • When the radar is misaligned after subjecting a strong impact.
  • When dirt or mud is attached to the rear bumper.
  • During bad weather such as heavy rain, fog, storm, etc.
  • When multiple vehicles approach continuously.
  • Shallow angle parking.
  • When a vehicle is approaching at high speed.
  • When parking on a steep incline, such as hills, a dip in the road, etc.
  • When items such as a bicycle carrier are installed on the rear of the vehicle.
  • Condition below might causes BSM to trigger unnecessarily detection on vehicles or object:
  • When a vehicle passes by the side of your vehicle.
  • When the parking space faces a street and vehicles are being driven on the street as per shown in photo below.
  • When you have a very short distance between your vehicle and nearby metal object such as guard rail, wall, sign board, parked vehicle.
