SEWING THE GARMENT
  • RIGHT SIDE OF FABRIC
  • WRONG SIDE OF FABRIC
BEFORE CUTTING THE FABRIC
  • Tape parts of your front and back pieces together (1).
You can tape as shown (2), identifying each segment, to save on paper and simply to expose front or back when you are ready to cut the fabric.

JALIE SEWING TECHNIQUE FOR STRETCH FABRICS
IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A SERGER, USE THIS TECHNIQUE ON SEAMS THAT WILL NEED TO STRETCH (SIDE SEAMS)

  • First stitch: Wide zigzag stitch along the edge of the fabric (“zig” on the fabric, “zag” in the air), without stretching the fabric (3). This stitch will not be shown in the illustrations
  • Second stitch: Straight stitch 6 mm (¼’’) from edge, stretching the fabric gently (4) to preserve the seams’ elasticity.

VIEW A
(SAME TECHNIQUE FOR TANK OR DRESS)

  • Pin front to back, right sides together, at one shoulder and stitch without stretching the fabric (5).
  • Mark half (and quarters) on the neckline binding (6).
  • Find half of the neckline (bring ends together) and mark with pins. You can also mark quarters, for more precision (7).
  • Pin RIGHT SIDE of binding to WRONG SIDE of neckline, matching pins (8).
  • Stitch 6 mm (1/4’’) from edge, stretching the BAND (not the neckline) as you sew (9).
  • Press binding away from the garment, the seam allowance towards the wrong side of the binding (10).Jalie-4135-Sewing-Patterns-06 Jalie-4135-Sewing-Patterns-07
  • Fold the binding to the wrong side so that raw edges meet and press (11-12).
  • Bring folded binding over the right side of the neckline, press and pin (13-14). You fold where the raw edges meet.
  • Check the width of the folded binding to make sure it is as even as possible (adjust and press if needed) and topstich with a cover stitch (15-16), double needle or zigzag (17-18),(19 – view from wrong side).
  • Pin the second shoulder right 20 sides together and stich without stretching the fabric (20).Jalie-4135-Sewing-Patterns-09
  • Mark half of the armhole (21) and apply the binding to armholes, using the same technique you used for the neckline (8-19).
  • Pin and sew side seams. Start the seams slowly (you can even baste the bindings together at fi rst) to make sure the edges are even at the armhole (22).
  • PRESS SIDE SEAM ALLOWANCES TOWARDS THE BACK.
  • Fold bottom edge by 2 cm (¾’’) to wrong side, press and topstitch with cover stitch, double needle or zigzag (23).
  • Topstich the seam allowance with a short and wide zigzag so it stays towards the back (24).
  • Bring the fi rst shoulder seam allowance towards the back and topstitch in place (25).

(SAME TECHNIQUE FOR TANK OR DRESS)

  • Pin RIGHT SIDE of neckline binding to WRONG SIDE of neckline, matching centers and ends (26).
  • Stitch 6 mm (1/4’’) from edge, stretching the BAND (not the neckline) as you sew (27).
  • Press binding away from the garment, the seam allowance towards the wrong side of the binding (28-29).
  • Fold the binding to the wrong side so that raw edges meet and press (30-31).
  • Bring folded binding over the right side of the neckline, press and pin (32-33). You fold where the raw edges meet.
  • Check the width of the folded binding to make sure it is as even as possible (adjust and press if needed) and topstich with a cover stitch (34-35), double needle or zigzag (36-37), (38 – view from wrong side).
  • Mark strap placement on wrong side of back (39) and apply back binding using the same technique as the neckline binding (40).
  • Pin RIGHT SIDE of strap binding to WRONG SIDE of armhole, the notch at the armhole/neckline corner and baste with a zigzag, stretching the band between the notch and the end (41).
  •  Sew with a straight stitch, stretching fl at as you sew (42):
    • F to R: 1.3 cm (1/2’’) from edge
    • S to MM: 1.5 cm (5/8’’) from edgeJalie-4135-Sewing-Patterns-13
  • Fold strap, using the same technique as the other bindings (43-44) and topstitch to create the strap (45).
  • Pin and sew side seams. Start the seams slowly (you can even baste the bindings together at fi rst) to make sure the edges are even at the armhole (46). PRESS SEAM ALLOWANCES TOWARDS THE BACK.
  • Pin strap to wrong side of back, at the marks, adjust, stitch and cut excess strap (47).
