About your Virtually Invisible® 891 or 591 in-wall speakers
The Bose® Virtually Invisible® 891 or 591 in-wall speakers provide
superior performance for built-in stereo music listening.
Unpacking
Carefully unpack the carton and confirm that the following parts are included:
Note: If part of the system is damaged, do not use it. Contact your
authorized Bose® dealer or Bose customer service.
Refer to the contact sheet in the carton.
Recommended tools
You may need the following tools to complete the installation:
Speaker wire requirements
- Allow enough wire from the wall to wire the speakers before installing.
- Strip ½ in. (13 mm) of insulation at each end of both wires.
- Please check your local building codes and use only the correct type of wire required for in-wall installation.
- For information on installing speaker wire, consult a professional electrician or audio/video installer.
Placement guidelines
For optimal performance, install the speakers in positions similar to the
diagram below:
Notes
- Use a stud finder to ensure the speaker hole is at least 4¾ in. (12 cm) away from a joist.
- Mount these speakers in a wood frame or similar construction only. Bose recommends installing these speakers only in wood frame or similar wall construction with adequately
spaced studs, as found in 2 x 4 construction.
Placement in unfinished construction
If you are planning an installation in unfinished construction, purchase the
Bose rough-in kit. See “Accessories” on page 7.
Installing the Speakers
Cutting the speaker hole
- Trace the template in the speaker location.
WARNING: Do not cut into surfaces that have hazards concealed behind
them such as electrical wiring or plumbing. If you are unsure of your ability
to mount this speaker, contact a professional
installer.
-
Drill a hole inside the template area large enough for your cutting tool.
-
Cut along the line you traced.
-
Remove the cutout section.
-
Clear away any torn or rough material from around the hole.
Connecting the speaker wire
-
Pull out at least 14 in. (36 cm) of the speaker wire. Allow enough wire to connect the speaker from where you are standing.
-
Connect the positive wire to the red-marked terminal on the speaker.
Note: The terminal marking is located on the top of the terminal.
-
1. Connect the negative wire to the black-marked terminal on the speaker.
Installing the speaker
-
Holding the outside edges, insert the speaker into the hole.
Note: Do not press on the two small drivers on the face of the speaker. This may damage the speaker.

CAUTION: Certain forms of insulation (such as horse hair plaster, newspaper, cellulose, or blown-in materials) may pose a risk of ignition. Be sure to keep all insulation away from the speakers. -
Tighten all the clamp screws with a Phillips head screwdriver.
Note: If using a power drill, choose the lowest torque setting.
Attaching the grille
The grille magnetically attaches to the rim of the speaker. Place the grille on the speaker.

Painting the grille
You can paint the speaker grilles before you attach them to the speaker. Bose®
is not responsible for the quality of adhesion or finish of non-factory-
applied paints.
-
* Latex or oil-based architectural paint requires thinning for use with a siphon-feed spray gun. Refer to the owner’s guide provided with your spray gun for guidelines.
-
Be careful when using a sharp implement in the grille perforations to remove a paint clog, which can damage the grille.
Troubleshooting
Problem | What to do |
---|---|
No sound from speakers | • Ensure the speaker wires did not disconnect from |
the speakers or the receiver/amplifier.• Check the settings on your receiver/amplifier. Refer to the receiver/amplifier owner’s guide for instructions on settings.
• If other stereo speakers are connected to a second set of audio outputs on your receiver/ amplifier, select the proper A or B speaker setting to match the A or B outputs connected to your speakers.
Sound from one speaker only| • Center the balance control on your receiver/ amplifier.• Ensure no wires from the positive and negative terminals on the receiver/amplifier are touching.
• Disconnect the speaker wire from the receiver/ amplifier channel and reconnect it to a different channel.
• Check that no wires from the positive and negative terminals are touching where the speaker wire connects to the speaker.
• Disconnect the speaker wire from the speaker and reconnect it to another speaker. If this speaker works, your speaker needs to be serviced. Refer to the contact sheet in the carton.
• Replace and re-install the speaker wire if these troubleshooting steps do not solve the problem.
Bass/treble is weak| • Adjust the tonal balance setting on your receiver/amplifier.• Ensure there are no gaps between the speaker frame and the wall surface.
• Switch the wires connected to the positive and negative terminals on the receiver/amplifier.
• Disconnect the speaker wire from the receiver/ amplifier channel and reconnect it to a different channel.
Static/noise from speaker| • Ensure the wires are in good condition, are firmly connected to the speaker and receiver/amplifier and are not touching across terminals.• Connect the music source to the receiver/amplifier properly.
• See “Sound from one speaker only”.

FAQS
Can these be installed on 5/8 drywall?
Yes. There is enough clearance on the tabs to engage 5/8 inch material. The depth described in the manual which includes the 1/2 inch drywall reference is to make sure you have thick enough walls to mount the speakers. For example, some finished basement walls have 2x4s on their side, so you wouldn’t have enough depth clearance. The tabs on this speaker can definitely accommodate much thicker walls than 1/2 drywall.
How do you control it? Is it Bluetooth or wifi?
The speakers get hard-wired to a receiver. The receiver controls the speakers. They are not Bluetooth speakers.
can they be angled to face the direction you need while being recessed in the wall?
I don’t see how. They are designed to clamp into the drywall, flush with the wall itself. Thus if you are keen on perfect sound quality you might be happier with standalone speakers or on wall speakers that can angle.
What product is needed with sound bar
This is not a sound bar. If you want a sound bar you absolutely need a different product. These are stand alone speakers that are driven by a separate AV Receiver.
The price is1 box or 2 box ?
There are 2 in a box
what is the watts ?
The speaker should be used with amplifiers rated between 20 and 100 watts per channel.
Do you leave the paper on thr back of the of the grill or discard it?
Discard the paper, you don’t want anything to impede the flow of sound.
Are the screens paintable?
The screens are paintable.
what is the cutout on the RC55i?
It has a template in the box. Not sure of the size but if you use the template works great
What are the cutout dimensions?
Roughly the opening is 8″X11″. However, these speakers use a cam lock system to mount them to the wall. They are best suited for 1/2-inch sheetrock. The locking cams are small “arms” that rotate out when you turn them clockwise using a Phillips head screwdriver. They unlock in the opposite direction. The speakers come with a cutout template for easy marking of the rough opening. You could possibly mount these speakers in a wall that is not made of sheet rock if you use a little ingenuity.
What are the actual length and width of the cut-out/opening for the Polk Audio RC85i 2way speakers – (For the 8″ pair….)?
About a 1/4 inch smaller than the listed dimensions is what is needed for the hole. The bazel overlaps the wall by about an eighth on all sides. The cutout provided is a bit small but gives room for adjustments.
What gauge wire is best if the run through the attic and walls are about 60 ft? What about a closer range like 8 ft?
As these are passive speakers, you’re looking for a standard stereo wire. These days, most recommend 16 gauge. That would be for the 8ft run.
Is there a warranty with speakers?
Yes.
Are these nice enough to mount on the wall, and not in the wall? How thick are these?
You have to mount them in the wall. They aren’t designed to mount otherwise. They are open in the back not in an enclosed case. They flush mount in the wall.
