How I Harnessed the Power of Data-Driven Integrated Diagnostics to Improve
Clinical Decision Making
Natasha Dang, MD, is a cataract and refractive surgeon, comprehensive
ophthalmologist, and practice owner in Oakville, Ontario at Oakville Trafalgar
Eye Center.
Following is her first-hand account of how ZEISS equipment and the ZEISS FORUM
data management system have enhanced her workflow and enabled more in-depth
patient care.
Uncompromising values
At my practice, our goal is to deliver a premium patient outcome and premium
patient experience. This is ultimately why we chose to partner with ZEISS for
our cataract workflow, which covers every step from patient intake and
diagnosis all the way to surgery and follow-up visits.
We felt strongly that ZEISS shares the same values as our practice in terms of
uncompromising commitment to excellence in patient care. We were very
intentional in selecting ZEISS as a partner and integrating the complete ZEISS
solution into our cataract workflow, including:
-
ZEISS IOLMaster 700
-
ZEISS CLARUS 500 Fundus Camera
-
ZEISS CIRRUS 6000 OCT
-
ZEISS HFA 3 Model 860 Visual Field Analyzer
-
ZEISS Slit Lamps and Imaging Solutions
-
ZEISS Surgical Suite
– ZEISS OPMI LUMERA 700

ZEISS FORUM Data Management System
The benefits of an integrated workflow
The power of this complete practice solution from the office all the way to
the operating room is the unparalleled integration and seamlessness it offers.

It ensures that the patient journey from their first check-in until their
final post-op appointment is a comfortable one with limited opportunities for
errors created by redundancies or repetitive workflows.
What ZEISS FORUM means for our practice
Once a patient checks in, a demographic is created at reception, which is then integrated throughout the entire workflow and remains consistent across every ZEISS instrument in our practice. This means that if a patient has test results, they are available for review from a centralized place in the ZEISS FORUM data management system—and accessible from any place in the practice from the reception desk to the operating suite.
Not only does ZEISS FORUM capture and centralize all patient data and imaging, it also offers analysis tools in specialized software packages—like Glaucoma Workplace or Retina Workplace—in order to determine progression and stability as well as help guide clinical decisions and assist with treatment plans for patients who have been deemed appropriate for a surgical solution.

Clinical Decision Making
For example, a physician is able to review data in FORUM either before going
in to see the patient or while in the room with the patient and family members
to go over diagnosis and treatment decisions.
In-Office Biometry Testing
For patients for whom we’ve planned cataract surgery, biometry testing is scheduled in our offices in order to determine the correct power for the intraocular lens (IOL) with the ZEISS IOLMaster 700.
ZEISS slit lamps are used to microscopically examine the eyes for any abnormalities or problems in the anterior part of the eye, including macular degeneration, detached retina, and cataracts. We utilize integrated slit lamp imaging to document findings where indicated, such as unique or complex cases, and this imaging can be a useful reference in the operating room or a starting point for discussion with colleagues.
ZEISS FORUM offers a unique solution where the information from the ZEISS
IOLMaster 700 can be integrated—without any need for transcription or data
translation—into the entire cataract workflow, including directly into your
oculars in the operating room.

Clinical Decision Making
Through FORUM, relevant IOLMaster 700 data is imported into the surgical scope
and visible through your oculars in an augmented reality overlay. ZEISS
CALLISTO eye can guide capsulorhexis size and centration, LRI size and
placement, and toric axis alignment for optimal efficiency and precision.
For our practice, the use of ZEISS solutions throughout the office and in the
operating room—together with ZEISS FORUM—allows us to provide our patients
with a complete solution from beginning to end, where we feel that ZEISS is
actively supporting our practice goals and facilitating our objective of
delivering excellence in patient outcomes.
