auray STBAR-9 Mic Stereo Bar with Angle Adjustment
Thank you for choosing Auray
The Auray STBAR-9 is a solution for capturing stereo sound in the field and
studio. Use this stereo bar to quickly set two microphones in a stereo
configuration on a single mic stand. Diagrams engraved into the center of the
bar indicate the precise angle measurements for A-B, X-Y, and ORTF
configurations. Spacers are included to keep mics separated for stacked
arrays. The bar sits on a 5/8-inch base that can adjust pan, tilt, and swivel
for optimum mic placement. The dual 3/8-inch mounting threads are compatible
with mic clips and shock mounts, so you can capture sound with the microphones
of your choice.

Positioning the Bar
- Once the stereo bar is mounted to a mic stand, adjust the pan, swivel, and tilt for optimum mic placement.
Pan
The stereo bar can be panned a full 360°.
- Loosen the pan lock.
- Turn the bar to the desired position, then tighten the pan lock until secure.
Tilt
The stereo bar can tilt ±90° for vertical and horizontal alignment of your
microphones.
- The tilt lock is a spring-loaded ratchet handle. If the bar prevents you from rotating the tilt lock, pull the handle out so it disengages.
- Reposition the handle, and release it so it reengages.
Swivel
- Loosen the pan lock and turn the bar so the tilt lock is directly under the bar. Then tighten the pan lock until secure.
- Loosen the tilt lock to change the up/ down angle of the microphones. When the bar is at the desired angle, tighten the tilt lock until secure.
Microphone Spacers
- The microphone spacers ensure the mics are stacked vertically when setting up an X-Y configuration.
- Snap one of the spacers off the top of the thumbscrew, and snap it onto the screw beneath the stereo bar.
Microphone Configurations
X-Y
- Use two matching small-diaphragm cardioid condensers. X-Y configuration delivers a clear stereo image with minimal phasing issues.
- For the best X-Y results, place one microphone directly above the other, and at a 90° angle.
- Place one spacer above the bar and one below the bar. Then attach your microphones.
- Use the diagram on the bar to position the microphones facing inward at a 90° angle.
- Slide the microphones together so one is directly above the other and tighten the thumbscrews until secure.
A-B
A/B mic configuration, or Spaced Stereo Pair, is a good stereo miking
technique for choirs, orchestras, and drum kits. Use a matching pair of
cardioid or omnidirectional microphones spaced apart, but parallel, to each
other. The STBAR-9 allows you to spread the microphones up to 20 cm apart.
- Place the spacers below both microphones.
- Use the diagram at the center of the bar and face the mics directly forward, parallel to each other.
- Move the microphones apart to the most effective distance to capture the sound field. Then tighten the thumbscrews until secure.
ORTF
ORTF configuration is designed to mimic human hearing. This setup requires two
matching cardioid microphones, and it delivers a wider stereo field than X-Y
technique, without losing the center of the sound field.
- Place the spacers below both microphones.
- Use the diagram on the bar to face your microphones outward to form a 110° angle.
- Position the mikes at the ORTF markers on the bar. Then tighten the thumbscrews until secure.
