It is advisable to connect the kit up and check that you understand how
everything works before installing.
Connecting to your TV
At the end of the 30m cable A simply connect the vellow and white AV plugs (B)
to their corresponding socket on the HDMI Adapter (C) (ignoring red), Also
connect the Micro USB cable (G) to the HDMI adapter (C) and connect to a spare
5v USB socket in your TV, then using a HDMI cable (Not included) plug into a
spare HDMI input on your TV.
Plug in the 12vDC power supply unit (D) in to a mains socket. Carefully attach
the male connector from the power supply unit in to the black power supply
connector (E), also at the end of the 30 m cable.
Before turning on the TV gently remove the lens cap from the camera, which is
located in the drawer at the top of the nest box. The lens protrudes through
the base of this drawer, gently pull off the cap without twisting.
Switch on your TV and search for the appropriate HDMI channel using the TV
remote control.
The camera
The camera has a light sensor, and will automatically switch between infrared
(black and white), in low light levels and full colour images in bright
conditions.
The camera should not need adjusting, as it is set to focus on the height of a
nest. If it needs to be re-focussed, a small screwdriver will loosen the lens
by turning the lock screw (located at the front of the camera, on a side of
the protruding lens) anticlockwise. You will then be able to gently turn the
lens left or right to focus manually. Re-tighten the lock screw after. Make
sure the camera and all connectors are kept inside the nestbox drawer as they
are not waterproof!
Siting the nestbox
For Great Tits, Blue Tits and other hole nesting birds the box should be fitted at least 2 metres high up a mature tree or wall, and sheltered from the prevailing wind and direct sunlight. Facing between north and east is ideal. Using one of the nestbox hole protectors, 28mm or 32mm (F), will add extra protection against predators. The nestbox has windows in each side allowing enough natural light to produce a colour image in the daytime, it is recommended that the box is sited in a position that these windows are not obscured. For Robins and Wrens the middle panel on the front of the box can be removed (the section with the hole in and the box converted to an open front box. This should be fixed lower down, under 2m, in vegetation or undergrowth. The box can be fixed to a wall/tree/post through the pre-drilled hole at the back of the box as desired, a wood screw is included. To prevent any tripping hazards you can fasten the cable along a wall or fence. Where possible we advise you to place the cable inside a conduit or hosepipe to help prevent damage.
