General Information

Please read the user manual carefully before using the product for the first time!
The current understanding in modern occupational health and safety is that people in nursing professions experience significant work-related physical strain. Back injuries are common. There are many situations in which a patient has to  be transferred from a bed, a wheeled stretcher, ambulance stretcher, an X-Ray table or a wheelchair to a different stretcher or seat. The strain on the user and the patient / care-dependent can be reduced significantly through the use of  PEM Disposable Sliding Foil.
The use of transfer aids should be conditional upon the user having learned to use the equipment properly. The user has to decide for themselves what equipment is suitable to the patient’s situation and the intended sequence of movements.
The PEM Disposable Sliding Foil is part of a product line which is used to support any patient transfer in hospitals and other health care facilities.
The product may only be used for the specified purpose and under the specified conditions.
The information in this user manual is for the patient who is being transferred and moved, as well as the user performing the transfer / position change.

1.5 Service life / lifecycle
The PEM Disposable Sliding Foil is a disposable product and may only be used for one person. It is not suitable for processing or reuse.
Opened rolls of PEM Disposable Sliding Foil should be used up within 6 months. Protecting the foil from dirt, heat, moisture and sunlight is essential, otherwise the sliding properties can degrade significantly (also refer to the technical  data, storage). Unopened rolls have a shelf life of at least 12 months after receiving the product.

Safety information

WARNING indicates a potential danger which could lead to personal injury or material damage.

• It is the responsibility of the organisation / the user to determine, on the basis of the circumstances (weight / health condition of the patient) and the capabilities of the user, whether several users may be required for the transfer  and/or whether additional safety measures are required.
  ➢ It is essential to ensure that the number of users is sufficient to ensure a safe transfer in the given situation.
  ➢ Ensure that the transfers are performed by the users in a back-friendly manner.
  ➢ Weight limits must be observed (200 kg).
  ➢ Be sure to remove the PEM Disposable Sliding Foil after every transfer.
  ➢ Risk of slipping! Ensure that the patient doesn’t slide off the bed, stretcher, etc. during repositioning or transferring.
  ➢ Risk of accident! When using the PEM Disposable Sliding Foil, always ensure that the bed, the stretcher or any sort of mobile support whatsoever is standing securely, i.e. that brakes on it are engaged.
  ➢ Risk of injury on the cutter! Observe the safety information on the dispenser user manual.
  ➢ The PEM Disposable Sliding Foil must not be reprocessed. Reprocessing of the foil can lead to material damage and thus result in harm to the patient.
  ➢ Opened rolls of the PEM Disposable Sliding Foil must be used up within six month. Protecting the foil from dirt, heat, moisture and sunlight is essential, otherwise the sliding properties can degrade significantly.
  ➢ Damaged PEM Disposable Sliding Foils or PEM Disposable Sliding Foils which have lost their sliding properties due to application or storage errors must not be used.

2.2 Function check
Transfer products are also subject to a natural ageing process. Inspect the equipment regularly and carefully, in particular before each use.

Visual inspection
Ensure that material, seams, handle loops and buckles are undamaged and in functional order.

Using the product

3.1 Indication and further use
Due to the wide range of possible applications, the indications cannot be tied to a specific clinical picture, since PEM disposable PEM Disposable Sliding Foils are suitable for all applications involving people who require assistance.
Thanks to the reduced friction, the capabilities of the patient can be put to use when PEM disposable PEM Disposable Sliding Foils are used. The effort required on the part of the user is reduced.

3.2 Contraindications
Contraindications cannot be tied to a specific clinical picture. Observe the safety information under item 2.
If the muscle tone is elevated due to transfer movements being performed too quickly in patients who are anxious, are pain-sensitive, have a perceptual disability or are disoriented, then alternatives have to be developed. Please contact  our experts if this is the case.

3.3 Application risks
➢ Movements are performed too quickly → risk of falling

3.4 Areas of application
The PEM Disposable Sliding Foil is used in hospitals and other health care facilities as well as home care settings.
The disposability of the PEM Disposable Sliding Foil means a rapid and particularly hygienic transfer for users and integrates seamlessly into the material administration logistics of a facility. Back-friendly and energy- saving for users,  simple and comfortable for patients – with the PEM Disposable Sliding Foil you reduce friction when you move and/or reposition recumbent or sitting patients. The PEM Disposable Sliding Foil reduces the potential dangers when  moving patients as far as possible, as required by the occupational health and safety legislation, the load handling regulations and the accident prevention regulations.

3.6 Application
The PEM Disposable Sliding Foil is a tubular foil, skin-friendly, tear- resistant, latex-free and biocompatible. The special material composition enhances the high level of slip provided by the PEM Disposable Sliding Foil in daily care. The  PEM Disposable Sliding Foil can also be used as a disposable protective cover for repositioning and transfer aids. The PEM Disposable Sliding Foil is supplied as a 100 m roll on a sturdy cardboard core, ready to use in a shipping box or  dispensing box.

3.6.1 Option A
Place the foil roll in the dispenser
➢ Set the dispenser up (see the dispenser user manual).
➢ Remove the foil from the shipping box.
➢ Attach the size adapters to the openings in the cardboard core on the side of the foil roll.
➢ Slide the metal rod of the dispenser through the size adapters and the foil roll.
➢ Place the foil roll into the dispenser from the back and push it against the dispenser cutter.
➢ Hook the metal rod into the rod holder on the dispenser.
➢ If the dispenser is wall-mounted, then the foil roll is loaded from the front.
➢ A second person is required to load the foil roll if the dispenser is wall- mounted.
Cut the foil to length
➢ With both hands, move the PEM Disposable Sliding Foil by ¾ of a turn opposite the unrolling direction.
➢ The end of the foil can only be grasped gently.
➢ With both hands, pull the desired length of PEM Disposable Sliding Foil out below the cutter.
➢ The text is printed on at approx. 50 cm intervals and helps to measure the length.
➢ Gently press the cutter against the PEM Disposable Sliding Foil with one hand.
➢ Pull the PEM Disposable Sliding Foil over the cutter with the other hand.
➢ The PEM Disposable Sliding Foil can be torn off easily and cleanly without force.
Foil placement I
➢ Rub the PEM Disposable Sliding Foil between your hands.
➢ The air between the PEM Disposable Sliding Foil facilitates the sliding movement.
➢ Push the PEM Disposable Sliding Foil crosswise under the patient’s pelvis.
Foil placement II
➢ Rub the PEM Disposable Sliding Foil between your hands.
➢ The air between the PEM Disposable Sliding Foil facilitates the sliding movement.
➢ Place the patient on their side.
➢ Fold the PEM Disposable Sliding Foil down by approx. 1/3.
➢ Place the PEM Disposable Sliding Foil against the patient’s back, the position may vary correspondingly.
➢ Place the patient on their back.
➢ Pull the folded under third through sideways underneath the patient.
➢ The patient should be positioned in the centre of the PEM Disposable Sliding Foil.

Moving toward the head
Prerequisites: The legs can be flexed. Use of an anti-slip mat is recommended in this case!
➢ Flex the patient’s legs.
➢ The patient can move up by pushing with their legs, on their own or with the user’s assistance.
If the legs cannot be flexed, then an additional piece of PEM Disposable Sliding Foil is required.

Moving to the side
Prerequisites: none
The flexibility of the PEM Disposable Sliding Foil allows for sideways transfers.
Removal
After positioning has been completed, the PEM Disposable Sliding Foil can be removed without moving the patient.

3.6.2 Option B
Prepare the PEM Disposable Sliding Foil in the dispenser box
➢ Open the box lid.
➢ Remove the foil cutter and spiral cord.
➢ Turn the foil roll in the box so that the foil end is on top.
➢ Remove the tape from the foil.
➢ Pull the foil end approx. 50 cm out of the box with both hands.
➢ Pull the foil end out at the front edge of the box.
➢ Close the box lid.
➢ If the foil is difficult to pull out of the box, turn the roll 180° in the box
➢ Seal the box with adhesive tape on the sides
Cutting the PEM Disposable Sliding Foil foil to length
➢ Pull the desired length of PEM Disposable Sliding Foil down and out through the dispenser opening with both hands.
➢ Hold the PEM Disposable Sliding Foil with one hand.
➢ Place the foil cutter against the box lid with the other hand.
➢ Cut the PEM Disposable Sliding Foil in one continuous movement.

Hint: To achieve an exact straight cut, you can also run the foil cutter along the edge of the box lid while cutting.
The spiral cord can be used to secure the foil cutter to the dispenser box or the location using the adhesive pad.

The Petermann PEM-Disposable PEM Disposable Sliding Foil is a Class I Medical Device and meets the EURegulation 2017/745 of the European Parliament and Council dated 05.04.2017 for medical devices, also called MDR.
Petermann GmbH is certified in accordance with DIN EN ISO 13485 by TÜV Süd, Medical Devices – Quality management systems applicable to the design and development, production and distribution of aids for
people of limited mobility.

Cleaning, care and disinfection

The PEM Disposable Sliding Foil cannot be washed or treated since it is only intended for disposable use. Opened rolls of PEM Disposable Sliding Foil should be used up within six months. Protecting the foil from dirt, heat, moisture and  sunlight is essential, otherwise the sliding properties can degrade significantly.

There are no specific disposal regulations for PEM Disposable Sliding Foils, they can be disposed of in accordance with applicable national and local regulations.
