General Description

The Shure SM58® is a unidirectional (cardioid) dynamic vocal microphone for professional vocal use in sound rein forcement and studio recording. A highly effective, builtin, spherical filter minimizes wind and breath “pop” noise. A cardioid pickup pattern isolates the main sound source while minimizing unwanted background noise. The SM58 has a tailored vocal response for a sound which is a world standard. Rugged construction, a proven shockmount system, and a steelmesh grille ensure that even with rough handling, the SM58 will perform consistently. Out doors or indoors, singing or speech, the SM58 is the overwhelming choice of professionals worldwide.

Features

  • Performance tested, industry standard
  • Uniform cardioid pick-up pattern for maximum gain before feedback and excellent rejection of off-axis sound
  • Tailored frequency response specifically shaped for vocals, with brightened midrange and bass roll off to control proximity effect
  • Advanced pneumatic shock mount system that minimizes transmission of mechanical noise and vibration
  • Steel-mesh grille and enamel-coated metal construction resist wear and abuse
  • Effective built in pop-filter reduces undesirable wind and breathe noise
  • Furnished with zippered storage bag and break-resistant stand adapter
  • On/Off switch (SM58S only)

Placement

General Rules for Use

  • Aim the microphone toward the desired sound source (such as the talker, singer, or instrument) and away from unwanted
  • Place the microphone as close as practical to the desired sound
  • Work close to the microphone for extra bass
  • Use only one microphone to pick up a single sound
  • Use the fewest number of microphones as
  • Keep the distance between microphones at least three times the distance from each microphone to its
  • Place microphones as far as possible from reflective
  • Add a windscreen when using the microphone
  • Avoid excessive handling to minimize pickup of mechanical noise and
  • Do not cover any part of the microphone grille with your hand, as this will adversely affect microphone performance.

Applications And Placement

The following table lists the most common applications and placement techniques. Keep in mind that microphone technique is largely a matter of personal taste; there is no one “correct” microphone position.

Application Suggested Microphone Placement Tone Quality
Vocals Lips less than 15 cm (6 in.) away or touching the windscreen, on axis
to microphone. Robust sound, emphasized bass, maximum isolation from other

sources.
15 to 60 cm (6 in. to 2 ft.) away from mouth, just above nose height.| Natural sound, reduced bass.
20 to 60 cm (8 in. to 2 ft.) away from mouth, slightly off to one side.| Natural sound, reduced bass

and minimal “s” sounds.

90 cm to 1.8 m (3 to 6 ft.) away.| Thinner, distant sound; notice

able levels of ambient noise.

Avoiding Pickup of Unwanted Sound Sources

Place the microphone so that unwanted sound sources, such as monitors and loudspeakers, are directly behind it. To minimize feedback and ensure optimum rejection of unwanted sound, always test microphone placement be fore a performance.

Recommended Loudspeaker Locations for Cardioid Microphones

Proximity Effect

Unidirectional (cardioid) microphones progressively boost bass frequencies by 6 to 10 dB below 100 Hz when the microphone is at a distance of about 6 mm (1/4 in.) from the sound source. This phenomenon, known as the proximity effect, can be used to create a warmer, more powerful sound. To prevent explosive low-frequency sound during closeup use, the bass response gradually rolls off. This provides greater control and helps the user take advan tage of proximity effect.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can i use this to connect xvive u3 wireless system?

Yes, the wireless xvive u3 will work with this microphone cause the microphone is xlr and the xvive u3 is xlr and you just need to plug them into your mic and device.

Would this microphone work for outdoor use at a summer camp?

This is the number one used mic for concerts in the world. Look at any concert on video, they will be using the SM58 99.999% of the time. Indoor or outdoor. This is THE stage mic. I am an audio technician.

Is this a cordless mic?

Not wireless. Requires a cord.

Does the cable come with the sm58 microphone?

The SM58-LC DOES NOT bring the 3-pin XLR cable. If you are looking for the package that brings the XLR cable, you have to search for the SM58-CN or buy it separately.

What battery does this take?

I have a Shure SM58S. It does not need a battery. The SM58-LC should not need one either. I'm very happy with the quality of the SM58S.

Would this mic be good for live streaming such on youtube and twitch?

It’s not a horrible choice, but most people go with a condenser mic for streaming. I know the blue Yeti mics are highly recommended for streaming. The sm58 is more for live gigs where you have a lot more background noise.

Does the microphone have a stand?

No, it does not but any stand will do. It is a great microphone.

The weigth of the product is corect?

While it is heavier then my other mic's lol it is definitely not 19lbs maybe 5lbs tops.

Can i use with this mic with blx88 (wireless) receiver by way of xlr?

As long as your XLR is connected to both the mic and the receiver.

Does it come with a receiver?

NOT to my knowledge. When buying the mic, an attaching cord with a 3-prong connector on one end and a single pole on the other is normal. A Wireless adapting kit is normally bought in a totally separate pkg from the mic. I advise to pay attention when buying those as well as they can make a HECK of a difference in your performing sounds and vocal techniques.

Can i use sm58 with behringer u-phoria um2 audio interface?

Yes, you can use this Behringer interface with an SM58. Now, since the SM58 is a dynamic mic, you will likely have to set your gain at 100% to get an acceptable audio level into your computer. That said, the SM58 is a great mic and the um2 is a good budget interface.

I bought this (without the cable) to use for podcast recording. How do I connect it to my computer?

I'm not sure you will be able to as the microphone needs power and USB cannot provide that type of power. I use a device called a USB Audio Interface that provides the power and amplifies the sound and converts it to USB so that your computer can use it.

Can you add an on/off switch to the model that doesn't come with one?

Not that I am aware of, I suppose if you were pretty handy you could take it apart and rig something up. We are your Shure Authorized dealer with full warranty and support, any other questions please let us know, we hope you will consider us for your needs.

Is the battery included, is it built-in? is it rechargeable? Does it come with charger?

This is not the wireless version. No battery. Uses a cable.

Do you recommend this mic for podcasting?

This would be excellent and more than you need.
