Backyard X-Scapes VIR-2LPK5 Artificial Thatch Roofing Panel Synthetic
Palapa Thatch Roof
Before You Begin
IMPORTANT!: Thatch panels must be installed on a solid surface structure, or sheathing, such as a plywood deck over rafters (NOT spaced or skip sheathing). Waterproofing material, or underlayment, must also be installed over the solid seathing, as the Thatch Panels do not provide any protection from the rain. Common Underlayment Examples:
- I Roofing felt, sometimes called “tar paper’: usually comes in two weights , 15 lb. and 30 lb. Install over seathing using nails or staples to provide weather protection.
- lceShield is another option, similar to roofing felt but has a peel-away backing to adhere directly to the seathing.
- NOTE: Remember, install thatch panels over solid roof sheathing (such as plywood deck), preferably on a 30-degree pitched roof.

INSTALLATION
Gable Roof Installation
-
Install waterproof underlayment of your choice over the solid roof.
NOTE: Thatch panels do not provide any waterproofing capability. -
Begin the starter row with a half-panel (this creates a stagger so panel seams are not on top of each other). The overhang on the eave should be about 1 /2″ or 3/4′: and allow a 12″-16″ overhang at the bottom.
-
Install the half-panel using about 4-5 roofing nails or staples through the brown plastic band across the top.
-
Install a full panel next to the first starter half-panel. Always use 6-8 roofing nails or staples per full panel.
-
Create a double layer of thatch for the first row by placing a full panel over the starter panels. Place the top of the panel just below the brown plastic band of the starter row.
-
Continue the starter and first row across the bottom (maintain the 12″-16″ overhang).
-
Start the second row 8″ on center as shown.
-
Continue to install successive rows, 8″ on center, using half-panels where necessary to keep the seams between panels staggered.
-
When a row reaches the eave, cut the panel so the overhang is about 1 /2″ or 3/4′:
NOTE: Plan ahead- if the last panel in a row falls close to the edge, say its 4-6″ from the eave, it will be difficult to fit in a very short section of panel to finish the row. In this case, cut the next-tolast panel back 12-16″ and cut another panel to make the last fit. -
Continue installing thatch panels up the roof, keeping a consistent overhang on each eave edge and 8″ on center for each row.
-
Make minor adjustments to the 8″ on center row spacing as you near the top. The last row should line up even with the top of the ridge.
-
Repeat Steps 1-11 for the other side of the roof.
-
Use half-panels to cover the ridge as shown, using the same 8″ spacing as you did on the rows.
Hip Roof Installation
If you have a hip roof, install a starter row, first row and successive rows
8″ on center as shown in Steps 1-11 for a Gable Roof Installation. Maintain a
12″-16″ overhang at the bottom and a consistent overhang on any eave.
When any row approaches a hip:
- Make the last panel on any row stop even with the hip or a few inches short as shown.
- Make minor adjustments to the 8″ on center row spacing as you near the top. The last row should line up even with the top of the ridge.
- Use half-panels to cover the hip as shown, using the same 8″ spacing as you did on the rows.
Valley Roof Installation
If you have a valley roof, install a starter row, first row and successive
rows 8″ on center as shown in Steps 1-11 for a Gable Roof Installation.
Maintain a 12″-16″ overhang at the bottom and a consistent overhang on any
eave.
When any row approaches a valley:
- Make the last panel on any row stop even with the valley or a few inches short as shown.
NOTE: Try to alternate the rows into the valley and allow the thatch to form and sit in the valley.
Rounded or Umbrella Roof Installation
If you have a round roof, like a umbrella or a gazebo design, install the
thatch panels in the same way as in a Gable Roof Installation. Begin with a
starter row, then the first row and successive rows 8″ on center. Maintain a
12″-16″ overhang at the bottom.
