Gas Piping

WARNING

  • A licensed contractor shall perform the installation. All aspects of installation must conform to local and national codes, or, in the absence of codes, with Natural Fuel Gas Code NFPA® 54 / ANSI Z223.1.
  • Do not install near any combustibles such as wood structures, fuels, clothing, fabrics, or dry vegetation. Keep surrounding area clear of all combustible materials.
  • Install unit out of the way of pedestrian traffic.
  • The transformer and approved gas valve must be easily accessible so the gas can be shut off quickly in case of an emergency.
  • This unit is for outdoor use only. Recommended CSA/AGA Clearances: Sides 4 ft / Top 6 ft.

Install gas piping underground between the gas source and each candelere.
Reference Figure 3 if you are using natural gas, or reference Figure 4if you are using propane gas. See Figure 5 for commercial natural gas or propane gas piping installation.

  • Install gas piping underground using approved piping.
  • Keep gas lines clean and free from any dirt, debris, or contamination.
  • Maintain good piping practice by keeping pipe length and elbows to a minimum to eliminate unnecessary pressure drops. Do not use corrugated flex gas lines.
  • Most installations will require 3/8″–1/2″ approved gas line to each candelere. Required pipe size will be dependant on the length of the run and should be determined by a gas expert.

Gas Piping at Candelere

Reference Figure 6 for gas piping at a floor mount candelere, or reference Figure 7 for gas piping at a wall mount candelere.

  • Height of the gas piping at the candelere should be around 1″. The gas piping will need to extend out far enough to be fully threaded.

  • Center the gas piping and electric wiring in the middle of each candelere. See Figures 6 and 7.

  • At each candelere, install a 90° gas pipe elbow on the gas line. Then install the supplied gas hose to the 90° pipe elbow, as shown in Figure 8. Do not kink or make a tight radius bend on the gas hose, and ensure the gas connection is tight with no leaks. Locate the hose out of pathways where people may trip over it or in areas where the hose may be subject to accidental damage.

Electric Wiring

Install low voltage wiring (12, 14 or 16 GA 12 VAC) underground between the control panel and each candelere.

For wiring, reference Figure 3 if you are using natural gas, or reference Figure 4 if you are using propane gas. See Figure 5 for commercial wiring.

Reference Figure 6 for wiring at a floor mount candelere, or reference Figure 7 for wiring at a wall mount candelere.

NOTE: Wiring candeleres in a daisy chain configuration is acceptable. The standard candelere requires three wires (X1, X2, G) from the control panel or daisy chain configuration.

  • The 120 VAC source into the control panel can come from any 120 VAC source, including auxiliary relay from the pool controller or home system.
  • Typically, the pool controller is the device that turns the unit on and off. If a pool controller is not available, Grand Effects can provide a hand held remote system or an electrician can wire a decorative switch for ON/OFF control upstream of the Grand Effects control panel.
  • Center the electric wiring and gas piping in the middle of each candelere. See Figures 6 and 7.
  • For commercial installations, we recommend installing a keyed switch and kill switch located in close proximity and in visible sight of the feature(s). Keyed and kill switches are sold separately.

Burner Bonding

ATTENTION
An electrician must complete this preparatory step before the fire candelere is installed.

The National Electrical Code® (NEC®) allows listed low-voltage gas fired- luminaires, decorative fireplaces, fire pits, and similar equipment using low voltage ignitors that do not require grounding, and are supplied by a listed transformer / power supply with outputs that do not exceed the low-voltage contact limit (15 V RMS AC, 30 V continuous DC) to be located less than 1.5 m (5 ft) from the inside walls of the pool.

Metallic equipment, including metallic gas piping, shall be bonded in accordance with the NEC® in the US and the Canadian Electrical Code in Canada.

To bond the burner:

  1. Loosen the setscrew on the bonding lug.
  2. Insert the bond wire into the hole.
  3. Tighten the setscrew until the bond wire is secured into place.

LED White Lights Wiring

Low voltage wiring to the LED white lights in the candelere (12, 14, or 16 GA 12 VDC) can be installed in the same conduit as the low voltage electrical for the burner assembly.

The optional Grand Effects transformer, which requires a 120 VAC input source, can be installed next to the control panel. See Figures 3, 4, and 5.

There are multiple options for wiring the LED white lights:

  • To operate the LED white lights and burner simultaneously from the same transformer , wire the 36W Static Power Converter and burner as shown in Figure 9.

  • To operate the LED white lights independently, wire a 12 VDC transformer directly to the LED white lights, OR wire a separate 12 VAC transformer to the 36W Static Power Converter.

Candelere Installation
  1. Install the Candelere’s base or wall arm/support tray:
    – For floor mount models, place the base on the ground or pedestal over the gas piping and electrical wiring. The base does not need to be secured.
    – For wall mount models, ensure the gas piping and electric wiring is threaded through the wall arm as shown in Figure 7. Then secure the arm and mounting plate to the wall with four mounting screws. Mounting screws are not included; screw type will vary depending on the wall’s material.

  2. Place the inner assembly containing the burner, ignition assembly, lights, and converter on the base or support tray.

  3. Screw the gas hose onto the burner assembly’s flare adapter.

  4. Wire the burner and LED white lights with waterproof wire nuts
according to Figure 9. Refer to section 3.2.2 for alternative LED white light wiring options.
NOTE: The green ground wire from the inner assembly is crimped to a terminal fork behind the 36W Static Power Converter.

  5. Place the candelere’s cover and cap on the base or support tray.

Burner Setup and Operation

Burner Setup
  1. At each candelere, turn the switch located in the manual gas valve to the OFF position.
  2. With 120 VAC coming into the control panel, turn the burner switch ON.
  3. At each candelere, check that the spark electrode is arcing from the ignitor button to the pilot hood. You should be able to hear and see the electrode spark. If there is no spark, make sure that the candelere is receiving 12 VAC from the control panel.
  4. Open the manual gas valve at each candelere.
  5. In the control panel, turn the burner switch to the ON position.

At this time, the corresponding candelere should ignite. If the burner does not light, it may be a result of air in the gas line. If this happens, carefully purge the air from the gas line by disconnecting the gas hose from the burner assembly. The end of the gas hose should be outside of the burner when purging air from the gas line.

WARNING
To avoid the risk of property damage and serious injury, including death, when purging air from a propane system, be sure to disconnect wires going to the burner assemblies (terminals X1/ X2) located in the Grand Effects® control panel. There should be no power at the candeleres when purging propane. The propane adder valve should remain wired and energized when purging. After purging is complete, make sure the area is vented and free from built-up gas.

Reinstall wires at X1/X2 terminals, thus providing power to burner assemblies.
