Installation

Mechanical connection
Use only original accessories, in case of doubt consult the manufacturer. Take care that the carrying capacity/working load limit (WLL) of the lifting device/carrier is not exceeded, through the load of the device, the optional attaching devices (turning device, fork sleeves, crane boom, etc.), and the additional load of the gripping goods! Gripping devices always have to be gimballed, so they can swing freely in any position. In no case it is allowed to mount gripping devices with lifting devices/carriers in a rigid way! A break of the suspension may occur within a short time. Death, severe injuries, and material damage can result! When using the device on optional attachments (such as fork sleeves, crane boom, etc.), it cannot be excluded, due to the lowest possible construction of the total device (to avoid loss of lifting height), that the device may collide with adjacent components if the device is suspended in an oscillating motion and unfavorable positioning during travel movements of the carrier device. This should be avoided as far as possible by positioning the device appropriately and in a sensible driving style. Damage resulting from this will not be regulated within the scope of the warranty.

Lifting eye / Suspension bolt
The device is equipped with a lifting eye/suspension bolt and can be mounted on various carrier/lifting devices. Take care that the lifting eye/suspension bolt is safely joined with the lifting tackle (e.g. crane hook, belt) and cannot slide down.

Load hooks and lifting tackle
The device is attached to the carrier/lifting device with a load hook or a suitable lifting tackle. Ensure that the single chain strands are not twisted or knotted. Attaching the device to the lifting device/carrier, take care that all local safety regulation is observed.

Rotators (optional)
When using rotators, a free-wheel throttle valve must be installed. In order to prevent a sudden speedup and stopping the rotational movements, as this may damage the device within a short time.

Fork sleeves (optional)
To establish a mechanical connection between the forklift truck and the fork sleeves you have to put the forks into the fork sleeves and fix it with the locking bolt or with a chain/rope, connected to the eyelet on the fork sleeves and the lift equipment/carrier. It is definitely necessary to establish this connection. Otherwise, the device could slide from the forks.

probst-SG80-PGL2-Scissor-Block-Grab-fig-16

DANGER OF ACCIDENTS!

  1. Fork (of forklift truck)
  2. locking bolt
  3. Fork sleeve
  4. Chain/rope

Adjustments

Adjustment of the inside height

  • With one hand hold the adjustable support (1), and with the other hand disconnect the spring bolt (2) at About 180°.
  • Adjust the height of the adjustable support (1) by hand.
  • Fix the spring bolt (2) in one of the defined positions.
  • Take care, that the lower edge of the rubber grippers is aligned with the lower edge of the gripping good.
  • Always fix the spring bolt (2) after adjusting the height of the support. The danger of accidents!
  • Adjustable support Spring bolt (to adjust the inside height)
  • Adjustable inside height (rectangular tube with adjusting holes)

Operation

  • Operating for devices with automatic release
  • The device is connected to the lifting equipment/carrier (e.g. excavator).
  • Before lifting the device, the gripping range has to be adjusted.
  • The device is placed over the product, set down, the device closes around the product and it can be lifted.
  • Set down on the ground again, the device opens automatically, and the automatic release locks it into position so that the device can be lifted without closing up.
  • Placed over the next product, the automatic release disengages itself and the product can be lifted.

The device, therefore, is a ONE-MAN-MACHINE. Shut down the device without lifting equipment/carrier only on even ground. The gripping arms must be opened enough, to ensure a secure standing of the device. Otherwise, there is a danger of overturning! With movements with the lifted device (with and without load) the forks of the lifting device should be sloped a little to the rear (see arrows in adjoining picture). The device is equipped with an automatic release, which means the OPENING and CLOSING of the gripping arms results through the set down and lifting of the device. Pictures of the positions of the automatic release:

  1. Otherwise, there may be faulty switching and when setting down the load this can cause deformation or damage of the automatic release!
  2. The jerky lifting and lowering of the device with and without load. e.g. caused by driving fast with the lifting equipment/carrier over uneven grounds is forbidden
  3. When replacing a defective automatic release, it is essential to ensure that the slots of the two clamping pins always point downwards.
  4. The position of the slots must not be above or center, otherwise, there is a risk that the automatic release may jam when switching!

Use of the Security Net SSN
For the operation of the device (SG) in high-rise construction a security net (SSN) has to be suspended underneath the gripping is good! The use of the device (SG) in high-rise construction without a security net is forbidden! Danger to life! Suspend the security net underneath the gripping good by looking it into the handles of the device (SG), which are normally used for the guidance of the device (see ).

Fastening net hooks (optional)

  1. If the fastening of the security net at the 4 handles at the device (SG) is not possible, or undesired, optional net hooks can be assembled.

  2. Type: Order-No.:  net hooks for SG 60, SG 80, SG 100 4310.0965 Insert all 4 net hooks sidewise at the device (SG) – see Ill.1 and Ill.3 Ill. 1
Position the net hooks relatively far outside at the deviceTighten screws by hand.

  3. Tighten screws with the corresponding open-end-spanner.

  4. Tighten lock nuts with the corresponding open-end-spanner.

  5. Now the net hooks are ready for use→ Ill. 7

Limiting chain and automatic release

probst-SG80-PGL2-Scissor-Block-Grab-fig-19

Limiting chain
The position of the limiting chain (2) is between the upper crossbar of the device and the automatic release (1). This limiting chain (2) avoid that the rubber grippers (without gripping goods) can not close completely (minimal opening range).

  • When driving very fast over uneven ground with the lifting machine (excavator), having the Scissor Grab SG hanging on the open position on the lifting arm, the SG will “jump” up and down.

  • In this case, it could happen, that the automatic release (1) will accidentally be unlocked, and the SG will close until the limiting chain (2) will stop the movement of the grippers toward one another at a certain distance.

  • Due to the high dynamic forces in such an unlikely case, the limiting chain (2) and/or the fixing screws can be overloaded.

  • Therefore the limiting chain (see 2 in Ill. A) and the fixing screws (see A1 and A2 in Ill. A) have to be exchanged in such a case, also the correct function of the rotation break (Ill. E) must be checked (see
    Ill. F, G, H).

  • Order-No. For spare part-limiting chain and rotation break see the spare parts list.probst-SG80-PGL2-Scissor-Block-Grab-fig-21

  • Before any further initial operation, the complete assembly group (Ill. B +C) has to be checked for a sign of wear (damages).

  • If damages are noted, the complete assembly group (Ill. B + C) has to be exchanged!!!

  • In addition, a function test of the rotation break must be done (see Ill. F, G, H). If necessary exchanged the rotation break. The operation of the device (SG) with a damaged/broken limiting chain is strictly forbidden! Danger to life!!!

  • Mount the spare part limiting chain (2) as shown in Ill. A. and Ill. C. Ill. D shows the scissor grab with a stressed limiting chain. Complete assembly see spare parts list.probst-SG80-PGL2-Scissor-Block-Grab-fig-25

Automatic release
The automatic release with switching delay avoids an accidental unlocking of the automatic release and therefore a closing of the device (SG) without a gripping good.

probst-SG80-PGL2-Scissor-Block-Grab-fig-26

The reason for an accidental closing is a jumping motion of the device (SG), caused when driving very fast over uneven ground with the lifting machine (excavator).

probst-SG80-PGL2-Scissor-Block-Grab-fig-27

Fast driving with the device (with or without load) over uneven grounds is forbidden Function test of the rotation break

probst-SG80-PGL2-Scissor-Block-Grab-fig-28probst-SG80-PGL2-Scissor-Block-Grab-fig-29

The basic position of the rotation

  • Raise the automatic release with one finger and then let it go.probst-SG80-PGL2-Scissor-Block-Grab-fig-31
  • Should the return in the basic position takes about 2 seconds, the rotation of the brake is fully functional.
  • As soon as the return in the basic position takes less than 2 seconds, the rotation break at the automatic release must be exchanged unconditionally!!!
  • Otherwise exists the danger of accidents, because this is a safety part!
