Purpose of Use
- ADR 38 — Trailer Brake Systems stipulates every trailer having a ‘Gross Trailer Mass’ over 2 tonnes must be equipped with an efficient ‘Emergency Brake System’ which will cause immediate automatic application of its ‘Brakes’ in the event of the trailer accidentally becoming disconnected from the drawing vehicle. ‘Brakes’ so applied must remain applied ror dl least 15 minutes.
- The breakaway unit is designed to function as the emergency brake system under the above circumstances. The unit is tested to provide a constant current load of IOA for at least 15mins.
General Safety Instructions
- DO NOT install or use the breakaway unit without reading the manual. This manual must always be provided to the owner.
- DO NOT tow the trailer before performing a battery level check test.
- DO NOT allow the electrical wiring to be in contact. The breakaway unit is supplied with the battery con nected.
- DO NOT charge the battery for more than 5hours. The power charging switch must always be in the OFF position when charging is not required.
- DO NOT use the breakaway unit as a parking battery. The battery will be completely flat, and the trailer brakes will be released. The use of the breakaway system for any purpose other than what it is designed for will void all warranty.
- DO NOT hook cable to tow ball or safety chain anchor. Ensure that the cable from the breakaway switch is attached to the rear of the tow vehicle using a secure anchor point.
Installations Instructions
- Install the breakaway unit in a location that is accessible to allow easy installation and testing.
- Install the breakaway switch on the trailer drawbar. Ensure that there is enough distance to hook the breakaway switch cable onto the tow vehicle.
- Connect the electrical wirings to the connection points. Ensure that the wirings are connected correctly by referring to the wiring diagram below.
Testing Instructions
- Conduct both battery condition and breakaway unit functional tests after installation and before making each trip.
- TO test the battery, follow the steps below:
- a. Press the power charging switch to the OFF position to ensure that the breakaway unit is not connected to any external charger or battery source.
- b. Press the test button on the breakaway unit to check the battery level. Ifthe Fully Charged GREEN LED illuminates, this indicates the battery is charged. If the Recharge RED LED illuminates, charge the battery by selecting the charging mode with the power charging switch.
- To test the breakaway unit, follow the steps below:
- a. Disconnect the trailer plug from the tow vehicle.
- b. Pull the breakaway pin from the breakaway switch.
- c. Check electric brakes are applied and brake lights are activated.
Charging the 12V 5Ah Battery
- Battery charging is available from the tow vehicle auxiliary power (black wire), or the caravan battery system (grey wire) or battery trickle charger (grey wire).
- Charge the battery by selecting the appropriate charging source with the power charging switch.
- The Charging YELLOW LED will illuminate to indicate that the battery is charging.
- If the Charging YELLOW LED does not illuminate, check the internal fuses, replace if faulty. If not, check the charging system to ensure that is working.
- Do not overcharge the battery. The maximum charging current for the battery is 1.5A. Limit the changing time to 5hrs and ensure the power charging switch is at the OFF position after charging.
- When using a dedicated trickle charger, use a “zero-volt pickup” style charger (these are typically advertised as being able to charge a completely flat battery).
- The battery should be replaced every 2 years regardless of its test condition with the same type 12V 5AH SLA battery. CAMEC replacement battery ordering part number is 050721.
