FAQ’s

Can I leave my aquarium air pump on all the time?

Generally speaking, you should leave the air pump on all the time to help your fish get good water circulation and plenty of oxygen to breathe.

Does aquarium air pump size matter?

How big of an air pump does your aquarium need? Aquarium air pumps are rated by gallons just like most filters. It is recommended to get an air pump that is slightly larger than what is suggested, so if you have a 55-gallon (208.2 L) aquarium, it may best to go with a pump rated for 75 gallons (283.9 L).

Do I need to turn on the air pump in the aquarium?

Unlike the filter, the air pump is not an essential piece of equipment, so it wouldn’t pose any threat to your aquarium’s health if you turn it off at night. However, if you keep plants in your aquarium, it’s definitely recommended to keep the pump on at night to aid in photosynthesis

Can the air pump be too strong for fish?

An air pump that is too powerful can wreak havoc in your aquarium. When attached to a sponge filter, it can cause a current strong enough to stress fish that prefer calm water. Or, maybe it’s causing your airstone to work overtime, producing so many bubbles that you can’t see your fish.

Should I turn off the air pump when feeding fish?

If your filter is pushing water downwards then it can be a good idea to switch the filter off during feeding to prevent this — just be sure to switch it on again afterward! Many fish foods have a mixture of densities in one pack, so some will float, some sink rapidly, and some slowly.

Is it OK to turn off the aquarium air pump at night?

Generally, fish should be able to sleep without being bothered by bubbles or water agitation created by air pumps. Besides, if you want, you can turn off your air pump at night, but make sure the filter continues to run, so it fulfills the required aeration in the aquarium.

What happens if the air pump gets wet?

Water on a fire protection air compressor can cause the unit to rust prematurely, create a dangerous electrical short, and even create internal damage to the unit depending on the amount of water introduced

Where is the best place to put an aquarium air pump?

Aquarium air pumps are always placed  outside a tank  and must be located higher than the water’s surface. Air pumps feed air into the water through airline tubing that extends into the aquarium.

What is the pressure for a fish tank air pump?

You will need air pressure of at least 50 inches H2O. This is equal to about 2 psi. Regenerative blower-type compressors are preferred in the aquaculture industry because they are the most reliable and economical in this pressure range.

Are big bubbles better than small bubbles?

The smaller the bubble in that glass of champagne, the higher the pitch — and the price. Oenophiles have debated the most desirable characteristics of bubbles in champagne and sparkling wines for centuries, with most purists swearing that the smaller the bubble, the better the wine.

Do fish need bubbles?

Even the most well-maintained fish tank will have some bubbles. Think of bubbles as a sign that your fish are getting enough oxygen. As a proud fish owner, you should always strive to provide them with an optimal living environment that utilizes proper aeration and bubblers.

Can you run an aquarium pump without water?

Answer: Dry running of the pump can damage the mechanical seal and the motor. For this reason, the float switches should be arranged so that the fill level in the shaft does not fall below the minimum level required to operate the pump.
