HP 20508 Battery Chargers
Product Information
The HP Battery Charger Model 20508 is designed to charge lead rechargeable batteries with a charging capacity of up to a maximum of 120 Ah. The device has two charging levels: 8 Amp fast charging and 4 Amp normal charging. It should only be used indoors and is not intended for use with nickel-cadmium or other battery types such as gel. The device should be stored in a dry location when not in use to prevent moisture-related damage to the transformer.
Product Usage Instructions
- Before using the HP Battery Charger Model 20508, read the user manual thoroughly and follow the general safety instructions to prevent injury, power surges and fire.
- Disconnect the battery from the vehicle before charging. This prevents possible damage to the generator and vehicle body from spraying fluid. To do this, turn off the engine and remove the battery from the vehicle.
- Connect the alligator clips to the battery in the following order:
- Connect the positive charging cable (red) to the positive battery terminal (P or +).
- Connect the negative cable (black) to the negative battery terminal (N or -).
- Verify that there is contact between the alligator clips and the battery terminals. Set the 6/12 V switch depending on your battery and connect the charger plug to a 230 V power outlet.
- The device should now charge and display the charging strength on the ampere meter. When charging an empty battery, charging is faster at the beginning and decelerates as the charge increases.
- Turn off the device, unplug it and remove the cables from the battery terminals. Check the fluid level of each individual cell and refill if necessary before replacing the cell caps. Exercise extreme caution when wiping away any excess fluid from the cell lids as it is acidic.
- If you removed the battery from the vehicle for charging, return it now and reconnect it. Never start the engine when the battery charger is still connected to the battery as the high power output level may damage your engine.
Model 20508 max. 8 Amp / 6 + 12 Volt, battery capacity: 11 – 110 Ah
To ensure the safe use of electrical equipment, please follow the general safety instructions to prevent injury, power surges and fire. Please read this manual thoroughly and in its entirety before first use. It contains many important notes on the intended use of the device!
Safety instructions
- Do not store or operate the device within the reach of children. The device is not a toy.
- When not in use, store the device at a dry location to prevent moisture-related damage to, among oth-ers, the transformer.
- Before use, check the device and the cables for damage(s).
- In the event of damage to the cables or terminals, have any necessary repairs carried out by a profes-sional.
- Operate the device in indoor spaces only and prevent moisture from entering the device
Caution:
-
Gases
During charging, tiny bubbles form in the battery fluid that are formed from the release of gas. As the gas is flammable, no open fires should be in the vicinity of the battery and the area should be well ventilated. For this reason, first unplug the device before connecting the charger to the battery. -
Polarity reversal protection (discharge circuit protection)
A thermal fuse is built in to the device to protect it in instances of incorrect connection (positive cable to negative clip or vice versa). If connected correctly, the fuse cuts the power supply and regenerates after a short period. -
This charging device is intended for charging lead rechargeable batteries only and may not be used with nickel-cadmium or other battery types (e.g. gel).
-
Risk of injury
Avoid contact of battery fluid with skin, eyes or clothing as it is highly acidic and can cause serious burns. Rinse the affected area immediately with water in case of contact.
Instructions for charging a battery
Do not charge 12 V batteries with less than 10 Ah. The product provides a charging capacity of up to max. 120 Ah depending on the battery charger.
-
Disconnect the battery from the vehicle before charging.
The battery must be disconnected from the vehicle. This prevents possible damage, among others, to the generator. To prevent damage to the vehicle body from spraying fluid, it is recommended to fully remove the battery from the vehicle. -
Preparing the battery
First remove all caps from cells and make sure that the fluid level in each cell is sufficient. If the level is below the recommended level, refill the cell with ionized or distilled water. Do not use tap water. Do not remove the cell caps until the battery is finished charging. This allows any gas to escape that might form during charging. It is normal for a small amount of acid to leak during charging.
Important:
If you are using a Dangenite or Exide auto fill battery, remove neither the glass marbles nor the long fill device cap during charging. -
Connection
When connecting or disconnecting the cables to the battery, the device must be turned off and unplugged.
Connect the alligator clips to the battery in the following order: -
A) First the positive charging cable (red) to the positive battery terminal (P or +)
-
B) Then the negative cable (black) to the negative battery terminal (N or -).
Verify that there is contact between the alligator clips and the battery terminals. Set the 6/12 V switch depending on your battery and connect the charger plug to a 230 V power outlet. -
Charging the battery
The device should now charge and display the charging strength on the ampere meter. When charging an empty battery, charging is faster at the beginning and decelerates as the charge increases.
This battery charger has two charging levels: -
8 Amp. Fast charging
-
4 Amp. Normal charging
-
Ending charging
Turn off the device, unplug the device and remove the cables from the battery terminals. Check the fluid level of each individual cell and refill if necessary before replacing the cell caps. Exercise extreme caution when wiping away any excess fluid from the cell lids as it is acidic. If you removed the battery from the vehicle for charging, return it now and reconnect.
Never start the engine when the battery charger is still connected to the battery. The high power output level may damage your engine.
Vehicle battery maintenance
It is important to charge your battery regularly throughout the year,
especially in the winter months
The cold conditions cause your battery to decrease in performance during the winter. The oil is viscous and the heater, windshield wipers and headlights put extra strain on the battery. And during this time, the bat-tery has to perform at peak level. If it is not maintenanced regularly and kept in a fully charged state, it may fail altogether which can prove to be very expensive.
Troubleshooting
The ampere meter does not show anything:
- Turn off power supply.
- Unplug the device. Verify the alligator clips have contact. Plug the device back in and retest it.
- Make sure that no cables are damaged.
