GENERAL WARNINGS
All instructions concerning safety and the prevention of industrial accidents can be found in file SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS, that forms integral part of this documentation. This INSTRUCTION MANUAL only contains additional information that specifically explain how to use the machine.
SPECIFIC USE
The straight grinder is suitable for grinding materials such as wood, metals,
pla- stics or similar, especially in places that are difficult to access.
Use the product only for its intended use. Observe the manufacturer’s
indications and the permitted accessories.
**** GENERAL SAFETY WARNINGS FOR CORRECTION AND ABRASIVE CUTTING
OPERATIONS
This tool is designed to be used as grinder. Refer to all the safety warnings, instructions, illustrations and specifications supplied with the tool. Failure to follow all the instructions provided below may result in electric shocks, fires and/or serious injuries.
Theuse of this tool for smoothing, metal brushing and polishing operations is not recommended. Its use for applications other than those for which it has been designed may lead to hazardous situations and cause injuries to people.
Do not use accessories that are not specifically designed for the
intended use of the tool or that have not been recommended by the manufacturer. The fact that an
accessory can be fixed to the tool does not imply that it can be used safely.
The rated speed of accessories must be at least equivalent to the maximum speed of the tool. If operated at a greater speed than the rated one, accessories may break and cause the ejection of chips.
The external diameter and thickness of accessories must be appropriate to guarantee the protection and safety of the tool. Accessories with incorrect dimensions cannot be adequately protected or controlled.
Abrasive discs, flanges, sanding pads or other tool holders and accessories must properly fit the wheel holder spindle of the electric tool supplied. Tool holders and accessories that do not fit perfectly with the wheel holder spindle of the electric tool do not rotate evenly, vibrate excessively and may cause loss of control.
The discs, sanding cylinders, cutting tools or other accessories fitted on the spindle must be fully inserted into the clamping collet. If the spindle is not sufficiently tightened and/or the protrusion of the disc is excessive, there is a risk that the mounted disc can come loose and be launched at high speeds. Never use a damaged accessory. Before every use, check the tool holders and accessories and ensure that the abrasive wheels have no chips and cracks, that the sanding pad is not subject to cracks, or excessive wear and that the metal brushes do not have loose or cracked wires. If the tool or accessory used were to slip from your hand and fall, ensure that it has not suffered any damage or use an undamaged accessory. After inspecting and installing the tool holder or accessory, operate the electric ool for a period of one minute with the maximum number of revolutions, taking care to keep away and also to prevent other persons present from approaching the tool holder or accessory in rotation. In most cases, the damaged accessories or tool holders break during this trial period.
Wear protective clothing. Depending on the application in progress, use a face shield, mask, eye protection or safety goggles. If necessary, wear dust masks, hearing protection, protective gloves or special overalls to protect yourself from small abrasive parts or material. Your eyes must be protected from foreign bodies thrust into the air during the different applications. The dust mask and breathing mask must be able to filter the dust produced during the application. Prolonged exposure to high intensity noise leads to the danger of losing your hearing.
Pay attention that other people are respecting the safety distances from the work area. Anyone entering the work area must wear personal protection equipment. Fragments of the workpiece or broken tools may be launched and cause injury even to those outside the immediate operating area. Keep the device only for isolated surfaces of the the handle were work is performed during which the accessory may come into contact with hidden cables or with its own power cable. Contact with a live wire can also energize the metal parts of the device, causing electrical shock.
When turning on, always keep well the electrical tool in hand. The reaction torque time of the motor and its accessories may cause the twisting of the tool itself.
Use clamps to secure the work piece. Under no circumstances should you hold the work piece with one hand and the electrical tool with the other hand, while it is being used. By securing the work piece with clamps, you can have both hands free to better operate the electrical tool. During the cutting of small pieces, material in rods or tubes, they tend to spin and there is a risk that the tool gets jammed and is launched in the direction of the operator.
Always keep the electric connection cable away from the tool holder or accessories in rotation. If you lose control of the power tool, there is a risk of cutting or hitting the10electric connection cable and your hand or arm could touch the tool holder or accessory in rotation.
Do not place the power tool before the tool holder or accessory has come to a complete stop. The tool in rotation can come into contact with the supporting surface, causing you to lose control of the electric tool.
After each replacement of insert tools or after maintenance operations on the electric tool, check that the nut of the clamping collet and other fastening parts are tight. Fastening elements that are not tightened can move unexpectedly and lead to loss of control; components that are not tightened can be thrown violently.
Never carry the electric tool it is still in operation. Through accidental contact with the tool in rotation, it could grip onto clothing or the hair of the the operator and could come to seriously injure the operator’s body.
Regularly clean the fan slots of the electrical tool provided. The motor fan draws dust into the casing and a comprehensive collection of metal dust
may cause electrical hazards.
Never use the electric tool in the vicinity of materials flammable. Sparks could ignite these materials.
Do not use accessories that require liquid coolants. The use of water or other coolants can cause an electric shock.
The arbour size of accessories must properly fit the collet of the power tool. Accessories that do not match the mounting hardware of the power tool will run out of balance, vibrate excessively and may cause loss of control.
Mandrel mounted accessories must be fully inserted into the collet or chuck. If the mandrel is insufficiently held and/or the overhang of the wheel is too long, the mounted accessory may become loose and be ejected at high velocity.
SAFETY WARNINGS SPECIFIC FOR GRINDING:
- Use only wheel types that are recommended for your power tool and only for recommended
- Do not position your hand in line with and behind the rotating wheel. When the wheel, at the point of operation, is moving away from your hand, the possi- ble kickback may propel the spinning wheel and the power tool directly at

The tool is intended for use with bonded abrasive wheel points (grinding sto-
nes) permanently mounted on plain, unthreaded mandrel (shanks).
Observe the instructions of the manufacturer for correct mounting and use of
wheels. Handle and store wheels with care.
ADDITIONAL SAFETY WARNINGS FOR GRINDING AND ABRASIVE CUTTING OPERATIONS
Use only the type of cutting/grinding wheels recommended for your tool and
the protection specifically designed for the selected cutting/grinding
wheel. Cutting/grinding wheels not designed to be used with the tool cannot
be adequately protected and are unsafe.
The protection must be solidly fixed to the tool and placed in the safest
position possible so as to minimise the potential risk of contact between the
operator and cutting/grinding wheel. The protection is designed to protect
operators from the ejection of fragments in case of breakage and from
accidental contacts with the grinding wheel.
Cutting/grinding wheels must be used for the recommended applications only.
For example do not use the cutting side of the wheel for grinding
operations. Abrasive cutting wheels may break because they are designed to
be used for peripheral grinding operations and for the application of lateral
forces.
Always use the cutting/grinding wheels with undamaged flanges and verify that their shape and dimensions are appropriate for the selected cutting/grinding wheel. The purpose of flanges is to support the cutting/ grinding wheel and reduce the potential risk of breakage. Flanges forcutting
wheels may be different from those of grinding wheels.
Do not use grinding/cutting wheels that have been fitted on larger tools.
These cutting/grinding wheels are unsuitable because of their higher speed as
compared to that of smaller tools and could therefore cause explosions
FURTHER HAZARD WARNINGS
Avoid having dust accumulated on the work station. The dust can easily ignite.
A work piece can be safely locked in position only using an appropriate tightening device or a screw clamp and not just holding it with your hand. Adjust the protective earmuffs so as to impede a trail of sparks in the direction of the operator. Do not touch the rough and cut grinding wheels before they are cooled. Activate the locking key of the spindle only when the spindle is stopped. Otherwise, the electrical tool may suffer damages.

INFORMATOIN NOISE / MEAN ACCELERATION VALUE
The tools are suppressed in accordance for the prevention and elimination of radio disturbances measured in accordance with standard: EN 60745

**DANGER The indicate measurements refer to new power tools. Daily
usa causes the noise and vibration values to change.
Displayed emission values are comparative and are to be employed for a
provisio- nal assessment of the operator’s risk exposure during the work
period. Appropriate evaluation of work period must also include tool’s idle
and stop periods. These emission values represent the tool’s main
applications. If the tool is used for other applications, with other
accessories, or if it does not undergo regular maintenance, emission values
can significantly increase during operations.

STARTING UP

WARNING Pay attention to the mains voltage! The mains voltage must
correspond to the voltage indicated on the technical data identification label
(1).
DANGER Before any intervention on the electrical tool take the plug
out from the socket
BEFORE STARTING THE TOOL
Before starting-up the tool, ensure that:
- the packaging is complete and does not show signs of having been damaged during storage or transport;
- the power supply conforms with the characteristics of the tool;
- the power supply cable and plug are in perfect condition;
- all the parts of the tool have been assembled in the proper manner and that there are no signs of damage;
- the ventilation slots are not
FITTING/REPLACING ABRASIVE WHEELS OR CUTTERS
AR11S – AR52ES:
- Insert the stem of the wheel or cutter in the collet seating (5);
- keep the collet spindle (4) still using the wrench (7) supplied and tighten lock-nut (6);
- check that the tool does not rotate off-centre.
When the need arises to use tools having a spindle diameter of Ø 3 mm, fit the reduction collet supplied as accessory.
To fit the reduction collet:
- unscrew nut (6);
- insert the reduction collet;
- re-tighten the nut (6) then follow the normal tool fitting
AR38S – AR38ES:
- Fit pliers (Part. No. 921.131 or 922.131) into the out (Part No. 513.131) and make sure that they are housed in their seal;
- fit the milling cutter into the pliers, paying attention to the stem diameter which shall be equal to the pliers hole;
- it is recommended to assemble the collet together with the nut (6). Then insert the

When the need arises to use tools having a spindle diameter of Ø 3 mm or Ø 6,35 mm, replac1e1 the collet supplied with the spare collet having the necessary seat diameter.
To make the replacement:
- unscrew the nut (6);
- substituite the collet;
- re-tighten the nut (6) then follow the normal tool fitting procedure (see fitting 3).
MAINTENANCE
All maintenance operations are carried out with the power supply
disconnected. At the end of each work session, or when required, remove any
dust from the body of the tool using a jet of compressed air, paying
particular attention to the motor ventilation slots.
No other maintenance operations must be undertaken by the user.
Maintenance and cleaning of the inner parts, like brushes, ball bearings,
gears etc. or others, must be carried out only by an authorized customer-
service workshop or on www.rupes.com.
Use only the original RUPES parts or accessories.
WARNING: Before use, check the state of the wheels/cutters The
wheels/cutters must be properly assembly and must rotate freely. Never use
defective, damaged or coaxial wheels/cutters. Defective wheels/cutters can
fall to pieces and cause the danger of accidents.
Start the tool and check that there are no unusual vibration, or dismatching
movement of the tool. Otherwise switch-off the tool immediately and
eliminate the cause.
STARTING AND STOPPING
- Starting : push the slide of the ON/OFF (2) forward; if the tool is to be locked in the ON position, apply pressure to the front part of the slide switch at the same
- Stopping : release the slide ON/OFF (2).
If locked, press the ON/OFF switch in the lower part downwards and release it in the OFF position.
WARNING: after an interruption of the electrical energy, if the ON/OFF
switch is inserted, it is necessary to release the switch (see Stopped).
ELECTRONIC RPM REGULATION (AR38ES-AR52ES)
The rpm can be adjusted by rotating the wheel speed adjustment wheel (3) located on the rear of the tool. The choice of speed depends on the characteristics of the abrasive paper disc and the material to be worked.
USABLE WORKING TOOLS
AR11S – AR52ES:
Abrasive wheels or cutters available on the market of max Ø 45 mm and spindle Ø 6 mm (3 mm using the reducer supplier on request).
DISPOSAL (WEEE DIRECTIVE)
For EU countries only : According to the European Directive on Waste
from electrical and electronic equipment and its implementation in conformity
with national standards, exhausted electrical equipment must be collected
separately, in order to be recycled in an environmentally friendly way. The
product, when it reaches the end of its life, must not be dispersed in the
environment or thrown away as household waste. It must be disposed at
authorized recycling centres (contact your local authorities to know where to
dispose of the product according to the law). The correct disposal of the
product contributes to the health and preservation of the environment.
Illegal disposal of the product will entail penalties against the offenders.
Disposing of the product correctly contributes to protecting human health and
safeguarding the environment. Any illegitimate disposal of the product will be
punishable by law.

We declare on our responsability that the hand-held motor operated tool, which is mentioned in the present operating manual, is in comformity with the Essential Requirements of Safety of the following Directives:

The use of tools of larger diameter will overload the motor and drive
system leading to rapid deterioration.
