DNA Factory is an action-packed introduction to the science of DNA. Players create a hybrid creature by combining different pieces of DNA and RNA to mix and match characteristics and genetic codes. The RNA is “added” to the ribosome of the creature’s cell by launching darts and balls at a target.
Super words in the DNA factory
- Cell: The cell is the smallest part of our body with the basic properties of life. Large plants and animals have many billions of cells. Human beings are made up of more than 37 trillion cells.
- Nucleus: The nucleus is the main control center for the cell and acts like the cell’s brain.
- DNA: DNA stands for Deoxyribonucleic acid and is a special instruction that holds the information needed for making new cells and maintaining life, so it never leaves the nucleus.
- RNA: RNA stands for Ribonucleic acid and it converts the instructions in the DNA into proteins which are the building blocks of our bodies. RNA holds a special code telling the cells in our body how to behave. It tells us what color our hair is, how tall we are, how many freckles we have. If we can mix and match these codes we can create altered creatures like scientists do. This is how we will make our hybrids in DNA Factory.
- Ribosome: A ribosome is one of the smallest structures in a cell, but it has a very big job: to make protein called RNA.
- Hybrid: A creature that has a combination of DNA from many different animals.
SET IT UP
Number of players
One to three players.
Set it up
- Open the gameboard and put it in the centre of play.
- Assemble the Launcher Stand and the circular Target on to the board. This can be a bit fiddly so use the step-by-step guide on the following page.
- Separate the cards into two piles and place them on the space either side of the launcher. Make sure they are all shuffled. Hybrid cards go to the left and DNA cards (legs, torso and head) go to the right.
- Press the body part tokens out of the card and place them to one side of the board. The darts and launcher balls can go on the other side.
How to assemble the launcher
- A 12cm tape to be cut into 4 squares of 3cm (1 square is extra if needed).
- Attach 1 piece of velcro at the TOP of the base.
- Attach 1 piece of velcro to the BOTTOM of the base.
- Attach the base on the board.
- Attach the catapult on the base.
- Attach 1 piece of velcro on the RIBOSOME area.
- Attach the target on the board and enjoy the game!
HOW TO PLAY
Choose a character
Starting with the youngest first, pick a hybrid card at random. The character
you pick will be the hybrid you need to build. Place this card at the top of
one of the three DNA strands on the board.
Who goes first?
The youngest player goes first.
On your turn
-
Pick a card from the body parts card pile. It will either be a head, torso or legs card. On your first go you will be able to play the first card you pick, however once you start winning body parts you may have to wait for your turn to find the card representing the body part you need.
-
Turn over the card. You usually will see a number of yellow circles with RNA on them.
-
Count the number of RNA on your card. This is your number of attempts to shoot at the target. We need the RNA to travel through the Ribosome area to help make our hybrid creatures.
-
Depending on what body part you are after, there are three different sections of the target you will need to aim for. Choose darts or balls (shoot a dart with your hand or use the launcher to shoot a ball) and take your shots. You only need to hit your target once to win the body part token.
There are also special question cards hidden in the body parts pile. If you pick one of these you have the chance to gain your body part token without needing to hit the target. Simply answer the question correctly (solutions at the bottom of the next page). -
If you successfully hit the correct area on the target, collect a body part token and add it to the relevant area on your DNA strand. If not, return the card to the bottom of the pile.
-
After your turn, the next player takes their go.
HOW TO WIN!
The first player to collect legs, torso and head tokens and therefore fill
their DNA strand and complete their hybrid wins!
