-
Install the appliance on a dry, flat and stable surface.
-
Only connect the appliance to a correctly installed earthed mains socket.
-
When the cable is not needed, you can store it in the cable compartment 1.
-
All appliances are tested for proper working order during production. This may leave behind traces of water, for example.
-
Rinse the appliance twice with clean water before preparing coffee for the first time. Do not use any filters while doing so and proceed as follows:
-
Activate the appliance. Press and hold the BREW button longer (> 1 sec.). The BREW button starts to flash rapidly.
-
Fill the water tank up to the 8-cup mark. You can fill the removable tank directly from the tap 2.
Alternatively, you can also fill water directly into the tank in the appliance by using the glass jug 3.
You can read the required quantity of water from the scale on the tank 4. -
Place the filter in its position at the top right on the appliance housing underneath the outlet 5 and start the appliance by briefly pressing (< 1 sec.) the BREW button. The BREW button will now flash slowly. After a brief warm-up period for the heater, water will flow out of the outlet into the filter.
-
A signal tone will indicate that the water has flowed through completely. Empty the jug and switch off the keep-warm plate by pressing the BREW button longer (>1 sec.).
-
Repeat the described steps one more time. After a brief cooling period, you can then use the appliance to prepare coffee for the first time.
Coffee preparation
Preparation
-
Remove the lid from the bean container and fill the bean container with whole, roasted coffee beans 6.
Then fit the lid again. Eight cups of coffee can be prepared two to three times with one complete bean container filling. -
Notes: To ensure perfect functioning of the grinder, do not use any caramelised or very oily beans. Do not pour ground coffee into the bean container.
-
Fill the water tank with the required water quantity.
You can fill the removable tank directly from the tap 2.
Alternatively, you can also fill water directly into the tank in the appliance by using the glass jug 3. You can read the required quantity of water from the scale on the tank 4. -
Note: If you are unable to start brewing and hear three short signal sounds despite a full water tank, briefly raise the water tank and place it back onto the appliance. This removes air bubbles which may possibly form during filling.
-
Pull the filter holder horizontally from its mounting 7 and insert the filter paper 8 . For good flavour and optimum fitting in the filter holder, we recommend using Melitta® Filter Papers® 1×4®.
-
Place the filter holder prepared in this way on the left in the housing recess on the silicone mat under the mill 9 .
Grinding
-
Activate the mill with a long push on the GRIND button. The LED display for the BREW button starts to flash rapidly. Set the required quantity of coffee by briefly pressing the cup selector switch 10 .
With each push, the corresponding LED display switches to the next highest number of cups. The required coffee quantity is therefore indirectly set via the mill grinding time. -
Make sure that the number of cups that you select corresponds with the quantity of water in the water tank. Please note that all of the water in the water tank is consumed during coffee preparation. If the number of cups and the quantity of water do not match, this can lead to unsatisfactory coffee results.
-
In addition, the strength can be varied individually for any number of cups. The respective LED display changes by briefly pressing the strength selection button 11 . On the display, 1 stands for a mild setting, 2 for the medium setting and 3 for a strong setting. The grinding time is changed accordingly.
-
The grinding result is not always the same for different coffees with different roasts. If the grinding quantity in any of the settings does not meet your individual requirements, a further grinding quantity fine adjustment is possible (see 3.5 Grinding quantity fine adjustment).
-
The tilt lever on the upper mill housing can be used to adjust the desired coffee grinding fineness. The tilt lever has seven detent positions from fine to coarse 12 .
-
After making this setting, start the grinding process by pressing the GRIND button briefly. The GRIND button starts to flash slowly. A short warning tone will sound if the bean container has not been inserted correctly.
-
The mill grinds the set coffee quantity directly into the filter holder and switches off automatically once that quantity has been reached.
-
Remains of coffee may be left in the ground coffee chute after the mill has switched off. Pressing the knocking lever down and then allowing it to spring up quickly releases coffee from the ground coffee chute so it falls into the filter holder 28 .
-
Note: If there are not enough beans, the mill will switch off automatically. This can occur if the bean container has been accidentally ground empty or if the beans do not slide down. This is indicated by a short warning tone sounding three times and the GRIND button flashing rapidly. Do not switch off the appliance. After you fill the bean container, you can continue the grinding process by briefly pressing the rapidly flashing GRIND button. The missing coffee quantity is then ground. If the mill is blocked, the appliance will also switch off automatically (see section 6.2 Cleaning the grinder).
-
Take the filter holder out of the appliance and level off the ground coffee heaped in the filter by shaking the filter holder gently.
-
Push the filter holder back onto the top appliance mounting 5 . Make sure that it engages audibly
Brewing
-
The brewing mode is activated after the mill is switched off. The BREW LED begins to flash rapidly.
-
We recommend pre-brewing the coffee (“blooming”) for the best results. Briefly pressing (<1 sec.) the PRE-BREW button 13 before the start of brewing activates this setting for the subsequent coffee preparation. The PRE-BREW button lights up continuously and the water flow is stopped briefly at the start of brewing after initial damping of the coffee. Press again to deactivate pre-brewing. The last setting is stored for the next preparation.
-
Start the coffee preparation by pressing the BREW button briefly (<1 sec.). The BREW button starts to flash slowly.
-
Note: If you hear a brief signal sound three times during this process, there is no water in the water tank. If you are unable to start brewing and hear three short signal sounds despite a full water tank, briefly raise the water tank and place it back onto the appliance. This removes air bubbles which may possibly form during filling.
-
During brewing, the water is heated and flows via the rotating outlet onto the coffee powder 14 .
The appliance has stored different brewing profiles according to the selected number of cups. The ground coffee is dampened evenly due to different rotation within the brewing profiles. -
It is also possible to manually control the direction and time of the rotation during brewing (see 3.6 “Manual extraction control”).
-
You will hear a brief signal sound at the end of preparation. The BREW button will now light up continuously to indicate the warm-keeping phase.
-
The keep-warm plate will keep the coffee hot and then switch off automatically after 40 minutes to avoid unnecessary power consumption. You can, of course, switch off the appliance manually at any time by pressing the BREW button longer (>1 sec.).
-
The drip stop prevents coffee continuing to drip when you remove the jug from the appliance.
-
The removable filter holder allows you to dispose of the filter paper easily and trouble-free.
Using ready ground coffee
- If you want to prepare ready ground coffee, prepare the filter as described under 3.1.
- Put ground coffee into the filter paper according to your taste and the number of cups required. Then smooth the surface of the coffee powder as much as possible. If possible, weigh 6 to 8 g freshly ground coffee per cup. Next push the filter holder back into the top appliance mounting. Make sure that it engages audibly. Activate the appliance with a long push (> 1 sec.) on the BREW button.
- Adjust the set number of cups to the quantity of water and coffee used.
- Start the coffee preparation by pressing the BREW button briefly (<1 sec.). The LED display for the BREW button starts to flash slowly and the coffee is prepared as described under 3.3.
- epos® has been checked according to the ECBC standards (www.ecbc.info) and fulfils the demanding conditions of the “Coffee Brewer Certification Programme” in terms of coffee quality.
Grinding quantity fine adjustment
- The grinding quantity is determined by the number of cups and the strength setting. Since different people perceive the brewing strength differently, you can fine adjust the quantity to a setting other than the factory setting.
- Press the strength selection button longer (> 1 sec.) to activate the fine adjustment. LED 2 on the strength display lights up.
- A subsequent short press (< 1 sec.) on the strength button will light up LED 3. In this setting, the set grinding time is increased 10% by the number of cups and the strength setting. This increases the grinding quantity.
- A subsequent short press (< 1 sec.) on the strength selection button will light up LED 2. This shortens the grinding time by 10% and reduces the grinding quantity.
- The required setting is stored by pressing the strength selection button longer (< 1 sec.).
Manual extraction control
-
Manual extraction control is possible after the outlet starts to rotate.
-
Manual extraction control is switched on with a long push (> 1 sec.) of the strength selection button and strength display LED 1 or LED 3 begins to flash depending on the current outlet direction of rotation.
-
If LED 1 flashes, the outlet is rotating clockwise and the outer area of the coffee powder is moistened.
LED 3 indicates the opposite direction of rotation and moistening is carried out centrally. -
Pressing the strength selection button briefly (<1 sec.)allows you to change the rotation direction of the outlet.
-
You can change the direction of rotation as many times as you want. The manual extraction control can be ended again by pressing the strength selection button longer (> 1 sec.). The appliance automatically continues the extraction control set before brewing when you set the number of cups and strength.
Warm-keeping/automatic switch-off
- The taste of coffee changes when it is kept warm for longer periods. To prevent this, you should enjoy your coffee as fresh as possible immediately after brewing. Furthermore, unnecessarily keeping the coffee warm costs valuable energy.
- If you still want to keep the coffee warm, the appliance will automatically switch off 40 minutes after the brewing process ends.
- The BREW button is lit up continuously during warm-keeping. You can also switch off the keep warm plate manually by pressing the BREW button longer (>1sec.).
- If the appliance is not used, it will switch off automatically after 5 minutes.
- Your last settings are automatically stored.
- You can then activate the appliance again by pressing the BREW or GRIND button longer (>1 sec.).
Pressing the GRIND or BREW button longer again(>1 sec.) allows you to switch from the grinding to brewing function and vice versa.
Descaling
- Using water with very high levels of limescale can impair the function of the appliance. After you have used the coffee machine for a while, limescale deposits will build up in the appliance. To ensure that your coffee machine works perfectly and has a long life, you need to descale it on a regular basis.
- Descaling is urgently needed when the red CALC display lights up on the control panel 15. If you use the appliance on a daily basis with very hard water, we recommend descaling once per month as a precautionary measure regardless of when the CALC display lights up.
- Limescale can also block the three outlet openings on the rotating outlet. In that case, the water will flow out of the overflow hole. Precise damping of the coffee grounds and accordingly good extraction of the coffee aroma can then no longer be guaranteed.
If you notice this, you need to perform descaling immediately. To ensure good limescale removal at the outlet openings, we recommend using double the quantity of descaling agent and water in this case. Otherwise please proceed as described in the next chapter.
Descaling process
-
Please use a commercially available descaling agent to do this. We recommend using Melitta® ‚Anti Calc Liquid for Filter Coffee & Aqua Machines‘.
-
Prepare the descaling fluid as specified by the manufacturer and pour it into the water tank.
-
Place the jug on the keep-warm plate and fit the filter holder in the correct position underneath the outlet (or upper appliance mounting).
-
Activate the appliance by pressing the BREW button longer (>1 sec.) as for coffee preparation. The BREW button now starts to flash rapidly.
-
A subsequent, brief press (<1 sec.) of the BREW button starts the descaling process. Other settings do not need to be observed for this process. The BREW button will flash slowly.
-
Once about half of the liquid has run through the appliance, stop the process by pressing the BREW button again briefly (<1 sec.). The BREW button will start to flash rapidly again.
-
Wait for 10 minutes to ensure that the remaining descaling fluid removes as much limescale from the appliance as possible.
-
Next reactivate the appliance by pressing the BREW button longer (>1 sec.) and then briefly (<1 sec.).
Allow the remaining fluid to run through the appliance. -
If you hear a signal sound, switch the appliance off by pressing the BREW button longer.
-
Empty the jug.
Rinsing process after descaling
-
The appliance must be rinsed after descaling to remove any remaining descaling agent.
-
First rinse out the water tank under running water.
Then fill the water tank up to the 8-cup mark and put it back into the appliance. -
Activate the appliance, start it, as in a normal brewing process, and allow all of the water to flow through the appliance.
-
If you hear a signal sound, switch the appliance off by pressing the BREW button longer (>1 sec.).
-
If the appliance was completely descaled during the descaling process, the CALC lamp will no longer be illuminated after the rinsing process. If this is still the case, the limescale in the appliance was so far advanced that one descaling process was not sufficient to completely descale the heater. In this case, repeat the descaling and rinsing process one more time.
-
Empty the glass jug.
-
Then rinse out the glass jug with water.
Cleaning and care
Cleaning exterior
- Switch off the appliance before cleaning and disconnect the mains plug.
- Allow the appliance to cool down completely before cleaning it.
- Clean the parts that come into contact with coffee (jug, filter holder etc.) after each use.
- You can clean the housing with a soft, moist cloth.
- The glass jug with lid, the filter and the lids of the bean container and the water tank are dishwasher-safe.
- When cold, the keep-warm plate can be cleaned with a soft, moist cloth.
- Do not use aggressive or abrasive cleaning agents.
- Use the included brush 29 to clean the grinder.
- For continuously optimum coffee results, we recommend cleaning the bean container, the grinder and the ground coffee chute regularly. This is easiest when the bean container and the grinder are ground completely empty.

Cleaning the grinder
Note: You can call up cleaning and care instructions by using the QR code. The QR code is located on the appliance underneath the bean container. You will see it when you remove the bean container.
Completely emptying the grinder
- To simplify cleaning, the bean container should be completely empty.
- If there are only a few beans left in the appliance, set the appliance to 2 cups and one bean in GRIND mode.
Press the GRIND button and allow the appliance to grind itself empty.
Removing the bean container
- Turn the bean container anti-clockwise 16 and remove it from the appliance.
Cleaning the grinder
-
Turn the grinding fineness regulator to “Open” 17.
-
Lift up the handle and pull the grinder ring out of the mill 18 .
-
Pull the silicone ring off the disc carrier 19. Clean the grinder disc and the disc carrier with the included brush.
-
Coffee powder left over in the grinder ring betweenthe grinder disc and disc carrier can be removed bylightly knocking it out of the openings on the upperside of the disc carrier 20 or by vacuuming with a vacuum cleaner.
-
After cleaning the grinder ring, you need to fit the gasket on the disc carrier again. The grinder ring bracket first needs to be folded up to do this. The rectangular studs on the silicone ring need to be pushed into the openings on the disc carrier as far as possible. The gasket must rest evenly and withoutgaps on the disc carrier 21.
-
You can also clean the mill with the brush. Push theleft-over coffee powder towards the mill outlet 22.
We recommend using a vacuum cleaner to completely remove all the coffee powder residues. -
Coffee can be deposited on the mill outlet 23 over time that can lead to blockages. Therefore, you alsoneed to clean this area occasionally. Push the hard bristles on the brush into the outlet to clean it.
Note: If the outlet is completely blocked, it will not be possible to grind any more coffee. The appliance will switch off automatically in this case. You will hear a long signal sound. Stubborn left-over powder in the outlet, which you cannot remove with the brush, can be removed with a slim tool (e.g. the end of a spoon or a short screwdriver). By inserting the tool carefully into both openings of the ground coffee chute (picture), you can loosen the powder residue. -
Before inserting the grinder ring after cleaning, you need to set the grinding fineness regulator to the OPEN position 17.
-
The three studs on the outside of the grinder ring need to be inserted into their guides in the housing 24 .
-
To do this, one of the three triangles on the seal needs to be positioned opposite the triangle on the housing 25 .
-
In this position, press the grinder ring downwards as far as possible and push the grinding fineness regulator out of the OPEN position into a grinding position. If fitted correctly, the grinder ring can now no longer be pulled out of the mill.
Cleaning the mill outlet
- Coffee particles can become electrostatically chargedduring the grinding process. As a result, coffee powder may not fall completely into the filter and be partly deposited on the housing.
- To avoid this, the coffee powder is electrostatically discharged at the mill outlet.
- To continuously maintain this function, the housing slits at the mill outlet need to be free of coffee powder and should be cleaned with the soft bristles of the brush every 4 to 6 weeks depending on the appliance usage 26 .
Fitting bean container
- Position the bean container as horizontally as possible on the mill housing in the removal position.
- The mark in the bean container needs to be pointing to the front 27 .
- Press the bean container down gently and turn it clockwise to the stop. The appliance is now ready for operation again.
Deactivating all signal sounds
All signal sounds can also be deactivated if necessary.
The appliance needs to have been switched off to do this. Pressing the BREW
and GRIND buttons at the same time (>1 sec.) deactivates all signal sounds.
This is indicated by two LEDs lighting up briefly. Proceed in the same way to
switch them on again. You will hear a brief signal sound upon activation.
