Warnings

SECURITY

Important safety warnings.
It is necessary to follow the safety warnings below because the device is powered by electricity:

  • Do not touch the plug with wet hands.
  • Make sure that the electrical socket used is always accessible to be able to pull out the plug if necessary.
  • If you want to pull the plug out of the socket, you must grab the plug directly. Never pull on the cord as it may be damaged.
  • In the event of a fault with the device, do not attempt to repair it. Switch off the appliance, pull the plug out of the socket and contact Smeg’s technical support.
  • In case of damage to the plug or to the power cord, they may only be replaced by technical support to prevent any kind of risk.
  • Do not immerse the device in water.
  • Pay attention! Unplug before cleaning.
  • Do not let the power cord hang and dangle from the edge of the table or from any other surface, nor let it come into contact with hot surfaces.
  • Do not use the device for more than 90 seconds in a row. Let the device cool down for about 15 minutes before using it again. Keep the packaging material (plastic bags, expanded polystyrene) out of the reach of children.
  • Cleaning and maintenance which is the responsibility of the user must not be carried out by children without supervision.
  • Do not place the appliance on top of or near electric hobs or gas burners, or in a hot oven.
  • Check that there are no foreign objects inside the coffee grinder.
  • Switch off the device and disconnect the mains supply before replacing accessories or before approaching moving parts.

Connect the device
Note!
Make sure that the mains voltage and frequency correspond to what is indicated on the rating plate on the underside of the device. Connect the appliance to only a properly installed mains socket with a minimum capacity of 10A and properly earthed.

In case of incompatibility between the socket and the plug of the appliance, the socket must be replaced with one of a suitable type. It may only be done by qualified personnel.

  • This device must not be used by children.
  • Keep the device and the cord out of the reach of children.
  • Children must not play with the device.
  • The device can be used by people with reduced physical, sensory or mental abilities or a lack of experience and knowledge under supervision or if they have received training on the safe use of the device by a safety officer and if they are aware of the dangers of its use.
  • Unplug the device from the mains socket before carrying out any assembly, disassembly and cleaning work.

Intended use

  • The device is intended for use in household appliances and the like, such as:
    • in the kitchen for staff in shops, offices and other workspaces,
    • on room and breakfast accommodation and farm accommodation,
    • by customers in hotels, motels and in residential areas,
  • Other types of use, such as in restaurants, bars and cafeterias, are unsuitable.

Manufacturer’s responsibility
The manufacturer disclaims all liability for damage to persons and property caused by:

  • use other than that intended,
  • neglect to read the instructions for use,
  • tampering with any part of the device,
  • use of non-original spare parts,
  • failure to observe safety warnings.
    • Save these instructions. If the device is handed over to other people the user manual must also be handed over to them.

DISPOSAL
The electrical appliances must not be disposed of together with household waste. The devices that are present with this symbol is subject to EU Directive 2012/19/EU. All electrical and electronic devices that are disposed of must be disposed of separately from household waste and handed into special government waste stations. By disposing of the device correctly, environmental damage and risk to people’s health can be avoided. For more information on the disposal of the discarded device, please contact the municipal office, the local office for waste management or the store where the device was purchased.

Description/Mounting/Controls

DESCRIPTION OF THE DEVICE (Fig. A)

NAMEPLATE
Technical data and serial numbers are indicated on the nameplate and marking. The license plate never gets removed.

BEFORE FIRST USE

  • Unpack the device carefully and remove all packaging material and any advertising labels.
  • Wash all components, with the exception of the motor base (1) and the grinder (9), with hot water and ordinary washing-up liquid. Rinse with plenty of water and dry the components before you use them.
    • The grinder must never be washed and it must always be kept dry. Clean up the grinder with the included cleaning brush or with a brush with stiff bristles.
    • Check before use that all the parts are whole and free from cracks.

ASSEMBLY OF COMPONENTS

(Fig. B-C-D)

  • Place the container (2) on the motor base (1) and make sure it is consistent with the two reference notches ” DownUp ” present on the left side of the engine frame (1). Twist the container (2) clockwise at a height of the two indications ” DownUp ”.
  • Place the lid (3) on the container (2) and push it down.
  • Place plate (5) on the motor base (1) so that it is attached.
  • Open the silicone lid on the container for coffee beans (4) and place it on the plate (5).
  • Make sure the rubber outlet is centered in the container lid hole (4) as shown in Fig. D.

DESCRIPTION OF CONTROLS

Grind adjustment controls (8)
The device is equipped with control (8) which makes it possible to regulate the grinding level according to your needs:

  • FINE Fine grinding
  • MEDIUM Medium-coarse grinding
  • COARSE Coarse grinding

Move the slider so that the indicator (12) is at a height with the desired grinding level.

Knob for selection of grinding amount (7)
The device is equipped with 8 preset functions and a manual function that can be selected thanks to the knob (7). Each function corresponds to a preset quantity of ground coffee.

In relation to the selected quantity recommend we that you regulate the coffee beans graininess by moving the indicator (12) according the indications in the table below.

The Manual (M) function can be used after comfort for all levels of grinding.

USE

(Fig. A-E-F-G-H)
Ensure that the upper grinder (9a) is inserted and secured in place.

  • Insert the plug into the socket.
  • Lift the lid (3) and pour in the coffee beans the container (2).

If the LED on the knob flashes does it mean that the device is in error mode: the container of beans is not existing or not correct.

Grinding coffee in the container (4)

  • Place the powder container (4) on the plate (5) and be careful to open the silicone cover.
  • Select the desired grinding level by setting the indicator (12) to the desired one the graduation.
  • Select the desired amount by turning the knob (7) and make sure that the sleeve’s red indicator corresponds to the desired program: from “2” to “12”.
  • Press the START/STOP button (6) to start grinding. For all the presets of the programs, grinding ends automatically, with the exception of the manual function (M).
  • When the grinding is finished, container (4) is removed from the device.
  • To pour out the ground coffee beans from a container (4), you must open it by turning the cover (13) counterclockwise and removing it.
    • Grind an appropriate amount of coffee and make sure the coffee powder is below the maximum level mark the container.
    • In the manual function mode (M), you must stand near the coffee grinder: press the START/STOP button again to finish grinding. Be sure to stop grinding before the coffee powder reaches above the maximum level mark in the powder container.
    • Once the coffee has been ground, it can quickly lose its aroma. For excellent results, use the coffee powder immediately after grinding. Store the powder container in a dark, cool and dry place. Make sure the coffee powder level is below the maximum level mark in the container and make sure the container cap is on and properly tightened.

Grind the coffee in the filter holder for espresso-soaked coffee

  • Use the special supplied accessory (11) and attach it as shown Figure G to facilitate the centering of the filter. Then place a filter holder under the outlet.
  • Set the grind level to FINE.
  • Select program “1” or program “2 ” according to the desired function.
  • Press the START/STOP button (6) for to start the grind. For all presets program, the grinding will end automatically.
  • When the grinding is finished, the filter holder must be removed away.
    • Filter holder not included.
    • If the operating time of the manual grinding exceeds the safety set time (90 seconds), motor n stops automatically.
    • During grinding, you must not turn the knob (7) from one program to another, nor move the slider (8) for selecting the grain size.
    • If you wish to set a finer grind level than the one currently in use, we strongly recommend that you remove the grinder and clean it of any remaining coffee beans before proceeding with a new grind. To remove the grinder, see the CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE section.
    • The coffee grinder is equipped with an automatic shutdown function (standby) if it is not used for 90 seconds. To reactivate the product, press the START/STOP button.

GRINDING TIMES (Fig. E-F)
The functions anticipate preset times for the outlet of the ground coffee. Depending on your own taste, it is possible to increase or decrease the preset amount of coffee in any way, by personalizing the various functions.

Personalize the amount of ground beans for espresso coffee

  • Ensure that the grinding indicator (12) is in position for an appropriate grind level for espresso coffee (FINE).
  • Turn the knob (7) to “1”.
  • Press the START/STOP button (6) to start grinding and hold it down desired time. The sleeve (14) flashes below the programming phase.
  • When the button is released, grinding stops up, the sleeve stops flashing and the new one setting is saved.
    • By changing the number of ground beans for a cup of mild espresso coffee the quantity for double also changes Bold espresso coffee.

Customize the number of ground beans for filter coffee/Chemex/french press coffee

  • Make sure the grinding indicator (12) is in the mode for a suitable grind level for filter coffee/Chemex/French press coffee (MEDIUM/ COARSE).
  • Turn the knob (7) to “2”.
  • Press the START/STOP button (6) to start grinding and hold it down desired time. The sleeve (14) flashes below the programming phase.
  • When the button is released, grinding stops up, the sleeve stops flashing and the new setting is saved.
    • By changing the amount of ground beans for filter coffee/chemex/french press coffee for the 2 cup selection, the amount of espresso coffee will also automatically change for the other preset functions (from 2 to 12) found on the dial.

Restoring factory values
To reset to factory defaults, do the following:

  • Turn the knob (7) to program “12”.
  • Press the START/STOP button (6) and press and hold for 5 seconds. The sleeve (14) flashes 5 times indicating that all factory values ​​have been reset (for Espresso and filter coffee/Chemex/French the press coffee functions).

Cleaning and maintenance

CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE (Fig. A-H-I-L)

  • Make sure the coffee bean container (2) is empty and then activate manual mode (M) to remove any coffee residue from the grinder.
    • Before any type of cleaning work is carried out, the plug must ALWAYS be pulled out of the socket.
    • Never immerse the motor base (1) in water or other liquids.
  • Remove container (2) by turning it counterclockwise.
  • Remove any coffee beans that are in the grinder using the included cleaning brush (10).
  • Lift the handle (15) and turn the upper mill (9a) counterclockwise to unhook and remove it.
  • Clean the upper (9a) and lower grinder (9b) and the coffee outlet hole with a brush with stiff bristles or with the supplied cleaning brush (10).
  • Reassemble the upper mill (9a) making sure it is level with the two notches “ Down ” and “ Up ” and turn it clockwise to secure it “ Down ” and “ Up ”.
  • The container for coffee beans and ground coffee (2,4), the lid (3), and the plate (5) can be washed with lukewarm water and a neutral detergent.
  • The motor base (1) can be cleaned with a damp cloth and the use of cleaning agents or abrasive materials should be avoided.

What to do if

Problem/Possible reasons/Measure

  • The device does not work.
    • The contact is not inserted.
    • The coffee bean container has not been inserted correctly.
    • The motor’s thermal protection has been activated automatically after 90 seconds of continuous operation.
    • Insert the plug.
    • Check that the coffee bean container is correctly inserted on the motor base.
    • Wait until the thermal protection resets (about 15 minutes).
  • The LED on the knob blinks.
    • The coffee bean container has not been inserted correctly.
    • Check that the coffee bean container is correctly inserted on the motor base.
    • To assemble the coffee bean container, see the Assembling Components section.
  • The device stops during the function.
    • The motor’s thermal protection has been activated automatically after 90 seconds of continuous operation.
    • Wait until the thermal protection resets (about 15 minutes).
  • The appliance works but the ground coffee do not come out.
    • Coffee beans are missing from the associated container.
    • Block mill.
    • Add coffee beans.
    • Remove the grinder and check that there are no objects blocking the rotation.
  • The setting of the ground level appears to be inaccurate or difficult to perform.
    • The upper part of the mill (9a) is missing.
    • Worn out mills.
    • Insert and secure the upper mill (9a) in its seat.
    • Replace the grinders by returning the appliance to an authorized service center.

If the problem has not been fixed or in the event of other types of errors, you should contact technical support near you.
