Self-contained luminaires and systems feature a very high degree of operational reliability, as faults in a safety luminaire are never able to influence the entire system.
Each luminaire functions practically autonomously for the prescribed nominal duration.
The systems are easy to install because there are no special requirements for the mains lines or for a special fire protection concept.
Nevertheless, self-contained luminaires must be properly stored, installed and serviced at regular intervals according to the regulations set out by the country in which they are located.

Note on the proper, ideal storage of luminaires with batteries:

  • Temperature: +5 to +25 °C / relative humidity: max. 65 % z5 96.
  • Avoid environments with corrosive gases.
  • Do not connect the batteries.
  • Avoid storing discharged batteries.
  • Longer storage of batteries when not connected results in battery self-discharge and deactivates the chemical components. Multiple charging-discharging cycles are then  required in order to achieve the Original battery capacity.

The mains (UN/PE) are connected in the relevant room with the same cable used to supply the general lighting. Ensure that the battery is charged using the permanent phase and not the switched phase.
ATTENTION: Repeated mains interruptions will cause damage to the battery.

Please note the correct steps for commissioning:

  • Install the safety luminaire after the construction phase, when the mains voltage is continuously available;
    ATTENTION:

  • Write the commissioning date on the battery.

  • Insert the battery cables

  • Remove the jumper for the “non-maintained light° switching mode

  • Add the switching mode to the adhesive label on the luminaire (0 non-maintained light/1 maintained light)

  • Connect the luminaire to the mains.

  • Close the luminaire (covers, etc.)

  • Switch on the mains

  • Carry out a visual inspection

  • Check the status LED (permanently green)

El D/E2D/E3D safety luminaires are fitted with an auto-test function. After successfully connecting the mains and applying permanent voltage to UN for at least 20 h, the self-contained luminaires are fully operational (ready). From this point, the automatic test sequences take place. A short function test is triggered weekly and a duration test is triggered annually to test the full nominal duration of the safety luminaire. The test type and result is indicated by a bi-colour LED. THORN Voyager E1D Self Contained Luminaires -

The optional coupling of the safety luminaires via the DALI port to a superordinate controller (SB 128 // LITECOM) can be used to synchronise and jointly log the tests required by standards via the calendar and clock function. This central approach eliminates the need for tedious, manual maintenance of a physical test book. THORN Voyager E1D Self Contained
