Batteries

The electric motor for the film transport, the light meter and the zoom motor are powered
by 1.5 v penlight batteries (we recommend Mallory batteries Mn 1500) :
BAUER C2A: 4 batteries
BAUER C2B: 6 batteries
The cover 16 of the battery housing can be opened and closed with the aid of a coin. When you insert the batteries, make sure that their positive and negative ends meet the
corresponding pole marks in the handgrip. One set of batteries will run about 15 films through a C 2 A and about 25 films through a C 2 B. When the temperature is below zero (when skiing) it is advisable to take along another set of batteries which should be kept, if possible, at body temperature. A green signal (ill. 1) above the viewfinder indicates the state of the batteries. When this signal starts flickering it will soon be time to exchange the batteries. ‘The signal lights up only at a speed setting of 18 frames per second. When the green light dims out completely it is high time to insert new batteries. For shooting at 50 frames per second it is recommendable to use new batteries.

Loading

The BAUER C 2 A and C 2 B are loaded with the conventional super 8 cartridge. The camera is loaded as follows : Push cover latch 4 upward ; open camera cover 2 and drop film cartridge into the cartridge chamber (see ill. 2) ; close camera cover. 4 Make sure the cover is carefully closed with the latch 3 all the way down. The camera is fitted with a ‘feeler’ which automatically sets the film speed within a range from 10 to 64 ASA. In a film-type indicator window 5 you can check with which type of film the camera is loaded. The filter slide ® must be set according to the kind of light available ‘ for shooting: In artifical light push it upward (ill. 3). in daylight push it downward (ill. 4). For black and white film, the filter slide remains in its upper position (ill. 3).

Footage counter

A super 8 cartridge contains 50 feet of film ; this is equivalent to three and a half minutes of shooting or showing at 18 frames per second. The footage counter 11 (ill. 5) is auto matically touched off when a cartridge is inserted. It indicates the number of feet yet to be exposed. The footage counter resets itself automatically to ’50’ when the cartridge is taken out. This means you should take note of the footage left if you take out a cart ridge before it is finished. If the footage indicator should not move at all when you shoot, there is probably some trouble in the cartridge. In such a case take out the cartridge and push the film ahead by an inch or so. Re- insert the cartridge and the film will most likely run on.

“Running speed
Use switch 13 for setting the running speed.
BAUER C2A: 12 -18 – 24 frames per second
BAUER C2B: 18 – 24 – 50 frames per second
You will take most of your films at 18 frames per second which is the accepted normal running speed. If you want to get a slow-motion effect you will shoot at 24 frames per
second (C 2 A and C 2 B) or at 50 frames per second (C 2 B) . At 12 frames per second you achieve a fast-motion effect (C 2 A) .
Important: Never release the camera at 50 frames per second if the camera is not loaded. Incidentally, the light regulator is automatically adjusted to the various running speeds.

Focusing
Before using the through-the-Iens focusing system, adjust the eyepiece to your eye. This is done in the following way: Set the lens 8 to 7 feet and the zoom lever to the longest focal length (telephoto). Then view a subject which is 7 feet away and adjust the eyepiece 19 by turning it to the left and right until the center of the cross-hair and the object are in perfect focus. Check: The center of the cross-hair must always be in focus r]0 matter what distance setting is used. When putting on the head rest <D or the plain eyeshade, make sure that the eyepiece setting is not accidentally changed. The adjustment range of the eyepiece extends from +5 to -5 diopters.
For focusing through the lens (distance is actually measured from film level) set the zoom lever to the longest focal length (telephoto) and adjust the distance setting ring ® until both cross-hair and subject appear sharp in the viewfinder.
The through-the-Iens viewfinder is a most valuable aid in close-up shooting. At the short est distance . setting in combination with the telephoto setting, very small objects may already fill the whole picture size. If you want to move even closer up, you may use one of the conventional close-up lenses with screw-in mount (diameter C2A: 55xO.75 ; C2B : 49xO.75).

Zoom lens and light regulator

The zoom lenses of the BAUER C 2 A 1 C 2 B permit highly convenient framing : Move the zoom lever 7 to the left or to the right, or simply use the power zoom by pressing the key 6 (T’ means telephoto; ‘W’ means wideangle setting).
Right below the viewfinder image (ill. 1) you will find an fl stop indicator. The red zones beyond f/1.8 and f/ 16 are warning signals indicating that you are on the verge of under exposure or overexposure. The fully-automatic BAUER CdS light regulator reads behind the lens and only the light that falls upon the film. This method guarantees a safe and well balanced exposure control. The light meter is fitted with a manual override for shoot ing scenes with unusual lighting conditions. For manual control, open the cover 9 and turn the manual f/stop setting wheel until the desired lens opening appears in the f/stop indicator below the viewfinder. This cover 9 can only be closed whEln the manual over ride is set back to ‘AUTO’, i.e. automatic exposure control.
