NIGHT OPS TACTICAL RNVG-15 Ruggedized Night Vision Goggle
INTRODUCTION
Thank you for your purchase of the RNVG – Ruggedized Night Vision Goggle. The
RNVG is an extremely tough, full featured night vision binocular. Any user
familiar with the PVS-14 monocular will find the controls to be intuitive. The
switch and focusing functions are identical to the PVS-14 and the switch has
three positions: OFF, ON and ON with IR Illuminator. Like the PVS-14, the
switch does not cut power to the tubes when changing positions to turn the IR
illuminator on. The RNVG has IR signaling capability. As a safety feature the
switch knob must be pulled out to turn the IR illuminator on. When the IR
illuminator is turned on a warning LED will be visible as a steady red
indicator light in the edge of the viewing area.
An IR spot/flood adapter can be added if the user desires more range from
their IR illuminator.
The RNVG is available in CR123 battery style. A flashing red indicator light in the edge of the viewing area lets the user know when the battery is low and needs to be changed. It is also now available with an auxiliary port which allows for the use of an external ANVIS style battery pack (for battery packs outputting up to 3.6V maximum).
RNVG optics feature a full range of adjustment. The Mil-spec Objectives allows the user to focus between 9.8 inches and infinity, while the Mil-spec Eyepieces offer a diopter adjustment range of -6 to +2. The interpupillary distance is adjustable to match the user’s eye spacing from 51mm to 73mm. IP adjustment is accomplished with jackscrews on both sides of the unit that maintain user settings using a ball-detent method to prevent any changes due to vibration.
The RNVG was designed from the ground up to be extremely tough. When a night vision binocular is dropped and broken, it will most likely fail at the joint between the optical pods and the bridge. However, both the optical pods and bridge on the RNVG are CNC machined from solid billet 7075 aluminum to prevent breakage. This material is 36% stronger than most common steel making the RNVG the most rugged night vision goggle in production.

IR Illuminator & IR Protrusion (A)
The IR Illuminator. The protrusion around the IR LED is made to accept a PVS-7 Spot/Flood adapter. -
Dovetail Mount (B)
A Dovetail style mount is used for the RNVG. -
Lanyard Loop (C)
Loop for option to add a neck lanyard to the RNVG to aid in preventing drops. -
Power Switch Knob (D)
The RNVG uses a standard three position switch knob. Off, On, and On with IR Illuminator. The IR Illuminator on the RNVG has a safety feature in which the power switch knob must be pulled out before you are able to turn the IR Illuminator into the ON position. -
Battery Cap & Insert (E)
The battery cap is tethered to the unit by a small lanyard and is screwed onto the battery insert. The
RNVG has a low battery warning indicator that flashes within the viewing plane when the battery needs changing. -
Objective Lens Assembly (F)
The Objective Lenses Assembly allows the RNVG to be focused. -
IP Adjustment (G)
There are individual IP Adjustments on both sides of the RNVG to fine-tune interpapillary distance. -
Auxiliary Port (H)
The Auxiliary Port on the RNVG allows the use of an external ANVIS style battery pack. -
Eyepiece Lens Assembly (I)
The Eyepiece Lens Assembly allows for diopter focus adjustment of the RNVG.
OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
INSTALLING / REPLACING BATTERIES
BE CERTAIN TO FOLLOW THE BATTERY MANUFACTURERS GUIDELINES FOR PROPER CARE, USE, AND DISPOSAL.
To protect the image intensifiers from damage due to excessive light exposure, always keep objective lens caps or daylight covers on when the unit is not in use.
In the viewing plane of your optics, a flashing red indicator light will be visible when the battery is low.
- Make certain the power switch is in the OFF position and the objective lens covers are in place before installing or replacing the battery.
- Unscrew the battery cap in a counterclockwise motion.
- Remove the old battery if necessary. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for properly disposing of or recycling the used batteries.
- Insert new battery with positive side up towards the cap.
- Replace the battery cap and, turning clockwise, firmly secure the cap.
Please note that it is recommended to remove the battery when not in use to prevent leakage and corrosion and to remove the on-board battery prior to using your RNVG with an external power source.
POWER / IR INDICATOR
IMPORTANT: Operate the RNVG only during night or low light conditions. Be certain to use objective lens covers or daylight covers during daylight conditions or when not in use. The RNVG is a high voltage electrical device and should not be operated in potentially explosive environments.
- Prior to use, ensure that the battery is installed correctly.
- Turn power switch clockwise to the first position to power the unit ON.
- To turn on the IR Illuminator, pull out on power switch knob and turn clockwise to the next position. Within the viewing plane you should now see a solid red warning light indicating that the infrared is engaged. The IR Illuminator is invisible to unaided eyesight. It can, however, be detected by other night vision devices. This safety feature prevents the user from unintentionally turning on the IR Illuminator.
SETTING FOCUS & IP ADJUSTMENT
Your RNVG unit will be collimated by your dealer/retailer prior to you receiving it. Collimation will properly align the images in your unit to prevent double vision or eye strain with extended use. The eyepieces will need to be set to match your vision; this is a one-time setting for each user. The objective lenses will need to be adjusted depending on the distance you are focusing on with the goggle. The IP distance will need to be set to match the distance between your eyes, this is also a one-time setting for each user.
Under dark conditions follow the steps below to set your lenses and IP distance:
- Look through the goggle at an object across the room or in the distance and rotate the Objective lenses until the object comes into focus and you achieve the optimal sharpness for your vision.
- Rotate the Eyepiece lenses on your RNVG to adjust the diopter setting until the image is the sharpest possible for your vision. The diopter adjustment is now set for your eyes. If you pass your goggle off to another user, the user may need to adjust the eyepiece diopters to work with their vision. The diopter setting can be compared to matching a set of prescription eyeglasses to a person’s vision. The setting will be different from person to person.
- IP (Interpupillary) distance is the distance between the pupils of your eyes as measured from center to center. Using the IP Adjustment knobs, move the optics in or out until you reach the most comfortable setting for your eye spacing.
CLEANING & MAINTENANCE
RNVG BODY
- Using a soft, dry, lint free cloth, gently wipe dirt and debris off unit.
- Once loose debris is removed, if necessary, then use a clean, damp cloth (water only) to gently wipe the housing of the unit only.
- Dry with another soft, dry, lint free cloth.
LENSES
- Always use a suitable optical cleaning cloth or lens paper when cleaning lenses. Do not use detergents, use fresh water only.
- Use dry lens paper to gently wipe debris from the lenses.
- Use moist lens paper to gently clean the lenses.
- Follow up with a dry lens paper to remove any moisture.
WATER EXPOSURE
If the unit is exposed to saltwater, rinse with fresh water prior to following
general cleaning and maintenance instructions. Clean lenses as noted above.
Important: While the unit is sealed and safe to submerge to the rated
depths, it is NOT recommended to power the unit ON underwater.
