Installation
Important notes
- Consult an expert when in doubt about installation. Professional installation is always recommended.
- This product is weather resistant, but not waterproof. Occasional moisture will not affect performance. Allow the product to ventilate and dry after water moisture.
- To maximize product life, position in areas protected from the elements, such as the underside of eaves and overhangs.
- Use only mounting kit provided with the product.
- Before mounting, make sure the wall/ceiling can support the weight of this product.
- Before you drill any holes for wall/ceiling mounting, make sure there are no cables, wires or pipes located underneath the surface.
- Make sure this product is firmly secured to the wall to avoid falling and causing injuries.
- Do not remove the grilles from the speakers. There are no user-serviceable parts behind the grille.
- Removing the grille will damage the speaker.
Placement
NOTE: Room acoustics can largely affect sound performance, such as room shape and size, type of wall and ceiling, windows and reflective surface.
Follow these guidelines for speaker placement to attain best sound effect.
- Place the speakers towards the listening area.
- Place the speakers at least 6’10” (2.08 m) apart.
- Place the speakers well above ear level.
- Place the speakers on either side of your AV receiver, and the three are at equal distance from your listening position.
- Place the speakers in a corner or near a wall to achieve greater bass where additional energy can be reflected from the walls.
- Experiment with various speaker positions to find the optimal setting for you.
Mounting
Multiple options are available for you to install the speakers, as described below.
TIP: You may rotate the badge on the speaker grille to a preferred position when the speakers are installed horizontally or other angled ways.
Placing on tabletop
You may simply place the speakers on a table or other flat surface. Make sure the surface is stable and sturdy.
Mounting with the supplied bracket
NOTES:
- See the section “Important notes” for safety precautions.
- Attach the speakers to walls/ceilings constructed of solid wood, brickwork, concrete, hollow building blocks or wood studs. Do not attach the speakers to non-reinforced plaster sheetrock (gypsum board)
-
Determine the location where the speakers are to be mounted.
-
Use the supplied bracket as a template to mark two screw holes on the mounting surface, then drill two holes.
-
Attach the supplied bracket to the wall/ceiling by inserting two supplied screws to the drilled holes. Make sure the screws are tightened to secure the bracket on the wall.
If needed, use anchors (not included) to secure the screws.
If needed, use two supplied rubber strips to further fasten the bracket on the wall/ceiling for vibration avoidance. -
Fix the speaker to the bracket with two supplied thumb screws.
If needed, place one supplied EVA sticker around the screw hole on the speaker’s top/bottom cabinet. The EVA sticker can make the connection tighter to avoid vibration.
Before tightening the thumb screw, you may pivot the speaker to its ideal position (e.g. facing the listening area). -
Repeat the steps above to mount the other speaker.
Hanging on a screw
NOTES:
- See the section “Important notes” for safety precautions.
- Attach the speakers to walls/ceilings constructed of solid wood, brickwork, concrete, hollow building blocks or wood studs. Do not attach the speakers to non-reinforced plaster sheetrock (gypsum board)
-
Determine the location where the speakers are to be mounted, then drill a hole.
-
Use a screw of proper length and diameter (not included) to firmly fasten it on wall.
If needed, use an anchor (not included) to secure the screw. -
Hang the speaker on the wall using the mounting hole on the back of the speaker.
-
Repeat the steps above to hang the other speaker on a screw.
Wiring
-
Using high quality marine-grade speaker wires (minimum 18 gauge recommended, not included), connect the speakers to your AV receiver or amplifier for audio output.
Connect the speaker wires to the speaker terminals on the back of the speaker, positive wire to the red terminal and negative wire to the black terminal.
Strip the wire insulation to a proper length so that the stripped portion can be fully inserted in the speaker terminal and securely held in place.
-
Make sure the speakers are wired correctly at 4 ohms. Observe speaker polarity when making connections.
Do not allow the positive and negative wires from the AV receiver/amplifier to make contact, as this will cause a short circuit. -
Avoid routing wires near any sharp or moving parts. Run wires away from other wires that may cause unwanted noise. Insulate bare wires properly.
TIPS:
- Speaker wire: Typical speaker wire has a pair of separate speaker wires with insulating jackets that are molded together. Measure enough wire to reach from your receiver/amplifier to each speaker plus additional length to allow moving the speakers or the receiver/amplifier without having to disconnect the wires. When connecting the speakers in a stereo configuration, the wire length should be similar. One length should not be dramatically longer or shorter than the other. Maintaining similar wire lengths will provide superior sound quality.
- Polarity: Speaker wires are marked for polarity consistency so that you can determine the positive and negative identity of the individual wires within the molded pair insulation. Polarity is shown by a color stripe on the insulation, by ridges molded into one side of the insulation, by the color of the insulation case around the wire, or by the color of the wire itself (copper or silver)
Troubleshooting
Distortion/Knocking sound
-
If you hear distortion from the speakers, immediately lower the volume level of your receiver. Those sounds often indicate that either the receiver or the speaker is being overdriven, and damage can result from playing your source material (music-CDs-DVD-MP3) at high volume levels for prolonged periods of time.
You should also avoid turning the bass or treble fully up and using your “Loudness button” when the volume level is at or above normal listening levels (Note: The Loudness button on most receiver is designed to add depth when your system is being used for background music or at very low volume). -
Distorted or unnatural sound can indicate poor connections, defective electronics, damaged source material or speaker failure. If only one of your speakers has poor sound quality, check the speaker wire and audio connections. If that does not fix the problem, try putting each speaker in place of one another (swapping).
If the sound remains poor on the suspect speaker after swapping location and the distortion moves with the speaker to the new location, the speaker may be the problem. If the distortion remains in the original location then the problem is elsewhere in your audio/video system.
