VENTILATION SYSTEM

  • The ventilation system in Luzchem photoreactors limits temperature increases in the main chamber to 3-4ºC above room temperature. A safe exhaust is standard in all photoreactors except the LZC-EDU and provides a safe exhaust for any ozone generated in the chamber. The exhaust tubing needs to be connected to a proper exhaust, such as a fume hood, whenever using UVC lamps (also called germicidal or 254 nm lamps) or when there could be any possible corrosive or irritant gases.
  • The unit’s air intake is at the bottom. Four rubber feet provide space for ventilation: do not remove them or block the bottom air intake.
  • The LZC-ICH2 model incorporates an upgraded ventilation system, which includes temperature control and additional fans to homogenize the chamber temperature.

EYE PROTECTION REQUIRED
Luzchem suggests eye protection at all times with its devices. Luzchem supplies all LZC and CCP photoreactors with UV-limiting safety glasses. Users must wear the provided “yellow” glasses when opening the door while the lamps are on. The transmission spectrum is below Figure 1 . Dark green light- limiting safety glasses for LED and other bright light sources are also available from Luzchem. These glasses cut out UV light and cut out >95% of visible radiation.

Luzchem recommends that the user switch off lamps before opening the door. The photoreactor control panel (Figure 2, below) includes a blue LED indicator that illuminates when the lamps are on.

SAFETY INTERLOCK

  • Luzchem photoreactors include a safety interlock which turns off the lamps to protect the user any time the door is opened. Once the door is closed, the lamps will automatically reignite.
  • In all models other than the LZC-EDU, the safety interlock can be overridden by using the key at the back of the unit, but this is not recommended. There is no override in the LZC-EDU.
  • For details on the safety interlock and bypass, please refer to section 2.1.

SKIN PROTECTION RECOMMENDED
Avoid skin exposure of more than 5 seconds by switching off lamps or wearing proper clothing to cover exposed areas. The typical intensity within the chamber is 0.3 mW/cm2 per lamp used.

DO NOT USE LIQUID SAMPLES IN OPEN CONTAINERS
Luzchem recommends that liquid samples in the chamber use closed containers but provide means to release any pressure buildup.

IN CASE OF SPILLS

  • Unplug unit. Call safety personnel at your institution for instructions.
  • Clean following procedures for specific chemical composition and properties of spilled substance.
  • Before attempting to restart the unit, check electrical components. Call your local electrical authority for inspection and approval.

Safety Interlock

  • All Photoreactors have a door safety interlock that turns off the lamps to protect the user any time the user opens the door. If the user opens the door, the LAMPS ON indicator LED will stop illuminating, and the red DOOR OPEN indicator LED (refer to Figure 2) will light up.
  • A bypass for the safety interlock can be found on the rear panel, although not recommended.
  • Inserting and rotating the interlock bypass key allows the lamps to remain powered if the user opens the door. Once in the override position, the key is no longer removable. The user must rotate the key counterclockwise to remove the key again.

LAMP EMISSION SPECTRA

  • Turn on the lamps approximately 5 minutes before the experiment begins. Luzchem recommends that the user switches UV lamps and LZC-LED lamp banks off before opening the chamber door. It may prove convenient to use a tray to place and remove
  • samples with minimal skin exposure or to minimize time when the lamps are off and may cool down between warm-up and experiment.
  • Luzchem provides detailed information on its lamps; see below for the emission spectra for several available lamp types.
  • Go to www.luzchem.com and click on Exposure Standards for further information.

It is possible to use germicidal or 254 nm lamps in any model except in the educational model, LZC-EDU, which does not have the exhaust system required for ozone generated by UVC lamps.

How to recognize the various fluorescent lamps:

  • LZC-VIS: Visible lamps have a white phosphor, usually labelled “cool-white.”

OPTIONS

Power meter

  • A Visible/UVA power meter is available for Luzchem photoreactors. Some packages, such as the LZC-4V, include this option.
  • Luzchem recommends annual inspection and recalibration of the power meter. Some compliance applications may require this option.

Connecting the power meter
To use the power meter, connect the detector head (sensor) inside the chamber (back left), and install the supplied cable to the handheld and the front panel (pictured right).

Power Meter Readings

  • The Power meter reads in lux units (illuminance) and has scaling options from lux to x100lux. Power meter calibrations are only valid with the sensor and handheld listed on the calibration certificate supplied.
  • The light intensity varies in different locations in the chamber; monitor the power at the locations where you will place your samples. All power meter calibrations are guaranteed to have ±10% error.

Visible Measurement
Luzchem verifies the factory illuminance readout before shipment in the x100 scale. Sometimes, a calibration certificate for LZC-VIS lamps is provided at purchase, indicating a correction factor. Luzchem only guarantees the validity of the factory readout or correction factor for 12 months from purchasing the power meter. Place the detector where in the sample’s intended spot in the chamber. Close the door, record the x100 value indicated on the handheld, and apply the calibration factor if applicable. Remove the detector and insert the sample to begin the experiment.

Refer to the instructions on the calibration certificate for applying the calibration factor

Narrow-band Visible Measurement
LZC-VIS lamp calibrations are not valid with narrow-band visible lamps such as LZC-420 and LZC-LED series lamps. Calibrations for these lamps are available on request.

UVA Measurement

  • Place the detector where in the sample’s intended spot in the chamber. Close the door, multiply the readout in the x1 lux scale indicated on the handheld by the calibration factor and record. Remove the detector and insert the sample to begin the experiment.
  • Refer to the instructions on the calibration certificate for further information on applying the calibration factor.
  • This calibration is specific to the LZC-UVA-367 lamps supplied.

Recessed Magnetic Stirrer
(LZC-D) Located centrally and approximately three inches from the front of the chamber, a magnetically coupled drive below the photoreactor floor allows for magnetic mixing. (see Figure 13). A rotary switch knob allows the user to control the speed from the front panel.

Carousel and turntable drive motor

(LZC-A) Luzchem’s installed carousel or turntables mate to a recessed motor drive linkage (see Figure 14). A rotary switch knob allows the user to control the rotation speed from the front panel.
Luzchem has fused silica test tubes available for use with the installed or portable carousel. Quartz test tubes are available in sets of eight or fifty. Pyrex test tubes are also available in sets of sixteen (P-tubes).

Installing Motor Drive Option
The sample carousel or turntable is easily installed and removed. To install it, place the axle on the chamber access hole (see Figure 15) and align it vertically over the hole. Then lower the axle and rotate gently until the locking pin engages the drive. Insertion should not require force.

Portable carousel and turntable
Portable carousels and turntables are available from Luzchem. These accessories have an internal rechargeable battery and fit in all Luzchem Photoreactors.

  • Power ON: Touch any key
  • R/L switches between clockwise and conterclockwise

Shut down timer
Standard on all photoreactors, the 3-position power switch controls the timer by selecting TIMER mode. Time-out is available from 1 to 99 minutes.

Using the Shut-down timer

  • Set “Power” to the OFF or middle switch position.
  • Use the Shift key (4) to select a digit to be changed. The selected digit will flash. Use the Up key (5) to increase the selected digit to
  • Repeat until the desired time displays on the lower screen.
  • Pre-select the desired functions (lamp selection, carousel or stirrer) concurrently with the timer.
  • Set the power switch to the ‘timer’ position. The Photoreactor will power on, including the fan and selected functions. The upper screen will display the set time and begin to count down. The Run LED (1) will begin to flash, and the Out LED (2) will illuminate green until the timer has elapsed.
  • Pressing the RST key (6) while the timer is counting down will restart the countdown from the set time. Be aware that the RST key will begin the countdown even when the front panel switch is in the OFF position.
  • Pressing the PAU key (3) while the timer is counting down will halt the countdown until the button is released. Note that this will not power the lamps off
  • To repeat exposures after the timer has elapsed: Set the front panel power switch to the off position and back to ‘timer’ to start the Photoreactor again.
  • To abort a countdown: Move the back panel power switch to the off position.

NOTE : If the door interlock override key is in the vertical position, the timer will pause when the user opens the door, and the lamps will power off. When the door is closed, the timer will resume counting down.
If the door interlock override key is horizontal, the timer will not pause, and the lamps will remain on.

Optional temperature monitor
This digital monitor reads the ventilation air temperature as it exits the irradiation chamber. The display can be factory set to Celsius or Fahrenheit. Unless otherwise requested, the factory setting is Celsius.

Temperature control
The LZC-ICH2 model include temperature control as part of the standard configuration. Temperature is only available with the LZC-ICH2 or in custom builds upon request for a fee. The minimum available temperature setting is 3-4 degrees above room temperature and up to 50°C. A front panel module allows for setting and monitoring the temperature. The temperature control system uses exhaust fan actuation, heat generated by the lamps and a 190W heating system to regulate the temperature within the chamber. Information on the temperature module is described separately in information from the third-party supplier of this unit and included with the manual of photoreactors that have the temperature control option.

Basic guidelines to set the temperature
Use the up and down arrows (↑↓) to choose the desired temperature (Holding the arrow will modify the set value faster).

SERVICE
DISCONNECT POWER BEFORE REMOVING THE TOP OR BOTTOM COVER
Everyday use should not require the end user to remove the bottom panel or top covers. See the service section for more information. The bottom cover (supported by seven screws) provides access to switches and motors for the carousel/turntable drive (optional) and the magnetic stirrer (optional). The inverted-U-shaped top cover, locked in place by six screws on the back and 4 (2 of which partly support the bottom) on the sides, provides access to lamp ballasts.

DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN SCREWS

Installing the exhaust hose

The exhaust tubing needs to be connected to a proper exhaust, such as a fume hood, whenever using UVC lamps (also called germicidal or 254 nm lamps) or when there could be any possible corrosive or irritant gases.
Installation of the exhaust hose/tubing also prevents the risk of injury from UV light escaping through the photoreactor exhaust port.

To install the exhaust hose:

  1. Connect the exhaust hose to the Photoreactor:
  2. Slide the hose clamp provide over the exhaust hose first.
  3. Slide the hose with a clamp over the exhaust port in the back panel of the Photoreactor. Tighten the clamp moderately using a slot screwdriver.

The other end of the exhaust hose must connect to an appropriate exhaust system, such as a fume hood:

  • A minimum of bends and curves as possible.
  • Install via the shortest path possible.
  • Exhausting over distances of more than 8 feet or with multiple bends may require a booster fan.
