Product Usage Instructions
Power On:
Remove all tape from the printer. Plug in and power on. Choose your
language and country/region on the control panel.
Load Paper:
Load Letter or A4 paper and adjust the guides. Refer to the Reference guide
for loading legal paper.
Connect Printer:
Ethernet:
- Connect an Ethernet cable from the printer to the same network as the computer.
- Confirm the IP address on the control panel and proceed to the home screen.
Wi-Fi:
- Ensure computer Wi-Fi is on and in range of the printer during setup.
- Enter Wi-Fi information on the control panel matching the computer’s network.
USB:
- Connect the USB cable to the printer and computer.
- Follow on-screen instructions to reach the home screen.
Choose Setup:
Basic Setup:
- For basic printing from a local computer or network, download HP software from hpsmart.com/download and complete setup.
Advanced Setup:
- Requires Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection.
- Visit hpsmart.com/setup to install HP Easy Start software, follow on-screen prompts, enable cloud features, and pair the printer to your HP account using HP Smart Admin.

Power on
Remove all tape from the printer. Plug in and power on. On the control panel, choose your language and country/region.
Power off the original printer and remove the power cord from the wall outlet, open access door and remove toner cartridge and install toner in your replacement printer along with all other accessories
Load paper
Load Letter or A4 paper and adjust the guides.

Connect printer
On the control panel, choose your connection method: Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or USB.
Ethernet
- Connect an Ethernet cable from the printer to the same network as the computer.
- Press “Continue” on the control panel to confirm the IP address. Continue with the steps on the control panel until you reach the home screen. Then go to the next section of this guide.
Wi-Fi
- Make sure the computer Wi-Fi is turned on and in range of the printer during setup.
- On the control panel, enter Wi-Fi information when prompted. Choose the same network as the computer.
- Continue with the steps on the control panel until you reach the home screen. Then go to the next section of this guide.
USB
- Connect the USB cable to the port on the back of the printer and to the computer.
- Continue with the steps on the control panel until you reach the home screen. Then follow the instructions for Basic setup in the next section of this guide.
Choose setup
Choose a setup option: Basic OR Advanced
Option 1 – Basic: Choose this option for basic printing from a local computer or network.
- Go to hpsmart.com/download to download HP software and print drivers.
- Install software and complete setup. Basic setup ends here.

Option 2 – Advanced: Choose this option for advanced setup with HP Smart Admin — web-based tools for remote printing and multi-printer management. See the next section for more information on HP Smart Admin.
Requires printer Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection.
- Go to hpsmart.com/setup and install HP Easy Start software. If prompted to enter a PIN, open the cartridge access door and enter the PIN displayed on the product label.
- When prompted, choose the option to enable cloud features. Follow the instructions to generate a pairing code on the control panel. Make note of the pairing code.
- In HP Easy Start, open HP Smart Admin and use the pairing code to pair the printer to your HP account. Follow the remaining steps to install drivers and finish setup.

This section is for users who choose advanced setup with HP Smart Admin.
HP Smart Admin is a web-based dashboard with tools designed to help you easily
manage printers, users and supplies.

- Invite users and other admins to access or manage printers in your fleet (business use only)
