TYPES OF WEFT EXTENSIONS

  • GENIUS WEFT (THE O-WEFT)
    Width: 26° | Height: 2mm / Weight: 50g – 70g per weft
Genius Weft Extensions combine the finest qualities of hand-tied and flat wefts to create the ultimate hair enhancement. These virtually invisible wefts are almost as thin as hand-tied wefts, offering a seamless look, and can be cut for effortless customization. With no return hairs to cause scalp irritation, they truly live up to their name.

  • HAND-TIED WEFT
    Width: 11° | Height: 2mm / Weight: 12.5g – 20g per weft
Hand Tied Wefts are expertly hand-knotted with fine thread, designed to lay close to the scalp for ultimate comfort and wearability. Highly requested in the market, they are suitable for clients with even the finest hair. These wefts can promote the growth and health of your natural hair. However, they do contain return hairs and are known for their delicate nature.

  • MACHINE WEFT
    Width: 20° | Height: 5mm | Weight: 100g per weft
A machine-weft hair is a versatile and long-time favorite among stylists. However, traditional machine wefts are thick, bulky, and contain return hairs that may cause scalp irritation. As the oldest type of weft, they are now considered outdated. They are made with a triple-head weft machine, they are durable, shed-free, and 100% reusable. They can be cut to any desired width and applied with beads or sewn in without adhesive or glue.

  • FLAT WEFT
    Width: 32* | Height: 10mm / Weight: 50g per weft
Flat Wefts combine the thinness of hand-tied wefts with the versatility of traditional machine wefts, allowing for easy cutting and customization. Designed with no return hairs, they are gentle on sensitive scalps. The flat design ensures they lay close to the scalp, providing discreet and comfortable wear for a seamless, natural look.

BEFORE CHOOSING AN EXTENSION INSTALLER

As a consumer, it’s essential to take proactive steps to ensure you choose a qualified and experienced stylist.

HERE ARE SOME TOP TIPS…

  • ASK QUESTIONS : Don’t hesitate to ask the stylist about their experience, techniques, and the types of extensions they work with. Inquire about their training and how long they have been installing extensions.
  • REQUEST PROOF OF QUALIFICATION: A reputable stylist should have certifications or proof of training in hair extension techniques. Ask to see these qualifications to ensure they are properly trained.
  • REVIEW THEIR PORTFOLIO: Ask the stylist to show you before and after images of their work. Pay special attention to how the installations look and how the extensions grow out over time. This will give you an idea of their skill level and the quality of their work.
  • CONSULTATION : Schedule an in-person consultation to discuss your hair goals, budget, and any concerns you might have. This meeting allows the stylist to assess your hair and determine the best extension method for you.
DISCUSS LIFESTYLE FACTORS: A good stylist will consider your lifestyle when recommending extensions. Discuss how factors like swimming, exercise, and the types of aftercare products you use might impact the longevity and maintenance of your extensions

THE PRO-WEFT METHOD
The Pro-Weft installation method is the method that we teach in our education, the stylist creates a tension-free foundation using aluminum beads. The wefts are meticulously sewn to this foundation with nylon or polyester thread, ensuring the beads are fully covered from both the top and bottom. This technique provides a secure, comfortable, and discreet installation, making it an excellent choice for a seamless and natural look.

THE WATERFALL METHOD
The Waterfall method involves creating a foundation by pulling hair through beads, with every second section either dropped down or included in the next bead. This technique can result in an unnatural direction of hair flow and does not allow for mini maintenance. Additionally, the foundation makes it challenging to dry the hair once installed, leading to potential discomfort and maintenance issues.

THE NATURAL BEADED ROW
The Natural Beaded Row method involves creating a foundation using beads at fewer contact points, integrating thread into the foundation, and stitching the wefts to the thread instead of directly to a bead. This technique can lead to unevenly distributed weight, potentially causing damage to natural hair. The method does not adhere to the 1:1 ratio rule of natural hair versus extensions added, increasing the risk of hair damage and discomfort.

THE NO-STITCH METHOD
The No-Stitch method involves placing the weft first, then pulling natural hair and extension hair through a bead to secure it to the head without using any thread. This technique does not follow the 1:1 golden ratio rule, often resulting in exposed beads and an untidy appearance. Additionally, it does not ensure even weight distribution or tension-free installation, potentially leading to discomfort and hair damage.

TIPS ON HOW TO BECOME A COVETED EXTENSION INSTALLER…

To become the right extension stylist for your clients, it’s important to focus on the following areas:

ONLY YOU CAN BE THE BEST VERSION OF YOU

  • Continual Education: Stay updated on the latest techniques and products in the hair extension industry. Attend workshops, obtain certifications, and practice new methods to enhance your skills.
  • Comprehensive Consultations: Spend time with your clients discussing their needs, preferences, and lifestyle. This helps in creating a customized plan that meets their expectations and fits their daily routines.
  • Building a Portfolio: Keep a detailed portfolio of your work, including before and after photos. Showcase different types of installations and how they grow out. This not only builds your credibility but also helps potential clients make informed decisions.
  • Transparency and Honesty: Be honest about what clients can expect from their extensions. Discuss the pros and cons of different methods and be transparent about maintenance requirements and costs. Personalized Aftercare Advice: Provide clients with tailored aftercare instructions and recommend products that will help maintain the health and appearance of their extensions. Educate them on the importance of proper care to maximize the longevity of their extensions.

WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF WEFT SHEDDING

  1. STRUCTURAL STRENGTH
A weft band that is too short may lead to shedding because the weight of the hair exceeds the band’s size.

  2. HEAT SENSITIVITY
Excessive heat on the weft band during styling, Aluminium Beads heat up to high temperatures which can melt the glue. Learn how to protect your weft.

  3. MOISTURE: DAMAGE:
Leaving genius wefts wet for extended periods can break down the glue. Discover the best drying techniques.

  4. PRODUCT REACTIONS
Products like Olaplex and Aerosol Dry shampoo have ingredients that can cause the glue to disintegrate. Find out which products are safe to use.

  5. BRUSHING TECHNIQUES
Incorrectly brushing wet wefts vigorously can compromise the band. We’ll show you the right way to brush.

  6. CHEMICAL EFFECIS
Using products containing bis (3-aminopropyl)amine can also lead to disintegration of the weft band.

EXTENSIONS AND DISCOLORATION HARD WATER

Hard water contains high levels of minerals, particularly calcium magnesium and copper which can significantly impact the color and texture of hair extensions. When hair extensions are washed with hard water, minerals from the water deposit on the hair strands. Over time, this buildup can lead to a noticeable change in the hair color.

  • SUNSCREEN
Sunscreen can change hair extension colors due to the chemical reactions that occur between the ingredients in the sunscreen and the hair fibers. Sunscreens often contain UV filters and absorbers like Avobenzone, Octocrylene and Oxybenzone that can leave a residue on the hair. This residue can build up over time and cause the hair to appear pink, brassy, or discolored.

  • HEAT AND UV EXPOSURE
Excessive heat from styling tools like flat irons, curling wands, and blow dryers can cause the pigments in the hair extensions to break down, leading to color fading. Heat can accelerate the oxidation process, especially if the hair is exposed to air and heat simultaneously. Oxidation can alter the color of hair extensions, particularly if they have been chemically treated or dyed.

  • SALT WATER & CHLORINE
Saltwater can lift the hair cuticle, increasing porosity and making the hair more prone to absorbing unwanted minerals and pollutants that can further change its color. Chlorine is a strong oxidizing agent and can strip the hair of its natural oils and color.  It reacts with the pigments in the hair, causing them to break down and fade. This can result in dull, lifeless color and even a greenish tint, especially in lighter-colored extensions.

SHORTER OVER TIME…

  • Wear and Tear: Daily styling, brushing, and washing can cause the ends of hair extensions to become frayed and split. Over time, this natural wear and tear can lead to the extensions breaking off at the ends, making them appear shorter.
  • Shedding : Hair extensions can shed strands with regular use. While high-quality extensions are designed to minimize shedding, some loss of hair is inevitable, contributing to the overall reduction in length and volume.
  • Maintenance Trims : To keep hair extensions looking healthy and free of split ends, regular trims are necessary. These maintenance trims, although minor, can gradually reduce the length of the extensions over time.
  • Chemical & Heat Damage: Coloring, perming, or using heat styling tools excessively can weaken the hair extensions, causing them to break or become damaged, leading to a decrease in length.
  • Natural Hair Breakage : Your natural hair can also break off, but because it continuously grows, you may not notice the breakage as much. Extensions, on the other hand, do not grow, so any breakage or shedding results in a noticeable reduction in length over time.
  • Product Buildup: Using hair products that contain harsh chemicals or heavy ingredients such as Hair Spray and Dry Shampoo can cause buildup on the extensions, leading to dryness and brittleness. This buildup can weaken the extensions, causing them to break more easily.

MOISTURE VS PROTEIN

Here’s a comparison chart that outlines the differences between moisture products and protein/repair products for hair extensions.

WHY DO ASH TONES FADE RAPIDLY?
Ash hair colors, known for their cool, muted tones and sophisticated appeal, are a popular choice for those seeking a chic, modern look. However, maintaining these beautiful hues can be challenging, as ash colors tend to fade more quickly than other shades. This rapid fading is due to a combination of factors including the composition of ash pigments, the porosity of lightened hair, environmental influences, water quality, and the use of improper hair care products. Understanding why ash hair colors fade faster can help you take the necessary steps to preserve their stunning vibrancy for as long as possible.

  • Pigment Composition: Ash hair colors often contain blue, green, or violet undertones, which are more prone to fading compared to warmer tones like reds and browns. These cooler pigments are less stable and can wash out more easily with each shampoo.
  • Porosity of Hair : Hair that has been lightened or bleached to achieve an ash color is usually more porous. Porous hair absorbs color quickly but also loses it more quickly because the cuticle is not as tightly sealed, allowing pigments to escape more easily.
  • Environmental Factors: Ashtones are more susceptible to environmental factors such as UV exposure and pollution, which can break down the cooler pigments more rapidly. Sunlight, in particular, can cause oxidation, leading to color fading.
  • Water Quality: Minerals in hard water can affect ash tones more noticeably. These minerals can deposit on the hair, leading to dullness and altering the cool tones more rapidly than warmer shades.
  • Hair Care Products: Using shampoos and conditioners that are not color-safe or designed for color-treated hair can strip away the pigments faster. Sulfates, in particular, are harsh on delicate ash tones.
  • Natural Hair Undertones: Hair with warm natural undertones may cause ash colors to fade faster because the underlying warmth will gradually come through as the cool pigments wash out.

To maintain ash hair colors, it is essential to use color-safe, sulfate-free hair care products, minimize exposure to harsh environmental factors, and consider regular toning treatments to keep the cool tones vibrant.
