5 Installation Instructions
It is not permitted to perform an installation of the Globehopper Edge device
inside a hazardous area. If the installation of the Nexxiot device is
performed outside of a Hazardous area, then there are no special safety
considerations or precautions required.
Before the device is mounted at the desired location, make sure the following
conditions are met: Make sure, drilling holes in the chosen mounting location
do not weaken the mechanical structure of the asset. In case of uncertainties,
get in touch with the manufacturer of the asset to define appropriate mounting
locations. Make sure, drilling holes in the chosen mounting location do not
puncture the assets cargo holding area in an unwanted area. Special care must
be taken for any kind of tank asset and bulk goods assets. Make sure, drilling
does not puncture any electrical, hydraulic or air tubes or lines or
functionally vital installations on the asset. Such installations can be
installed intentionally on the rear side of structural beams to protect them
against damage.
Wear the necessary personal safety gear during the whole installation to avoid
any injuries.
5.1 Intended Use / Restrictions of Use The Globehopper Edge is a smart device
for industrial asset monitoring and tracking. It is power independent with a
rechargeable battery and a solar panel. It is intended to monitor dry
containers.
Do not use this device for any other purposes. Nexxiot AG is not liable for
any damage to property or personal injury that result from unintended use.
5.2 Maintenance Instructions While the operation of this device is maintenance
free, it is the responsibility of the customer to ensure maintenance
operations according to IEC 60079-17. It is not possible to replace the
battery.
5.2.1 Cleaning For best performance, please clean the solar panel on every
service interval of your asset. The cleaning of Globehopper Edge device must
be performed outside of a hazardous area. To avoid scratching the solar panel
and degrading its performance, it is recommended to wash the device with a
sponge or cloth, using water and soap, suitable for Polycarbonate surfaces.

6.3 Mounting Guideline The container has a steel girder construction to
stabilize the container. Furthermore, the walls of the container are also made
of steel. This is not ideal for transmission and reception of radio
frequencies, like GNSS and GSM. The steel and the corrugation of the
construction direct and shield the signals. Especially for GNSS signals the
corrugation is shielding big parts of the sky and obtaining a fast and
accurate position fix is very challenging. The following overview shows the
location of the antennas within the Globehopper Edge device, being the basis
for the mounting consideration for an optimal operation of the device.
Figure 3: Antenna allocation
The Globehopper Edge must be installed in the locations shown in 6.4.
6.4 Preferred Mounting Position In the following visualization, the mounting
locations, considering the signal reception are sketched.
Whenever possible, mounting should be done onto the right door of the
container as this mounting position provides a clear view of the sky and
exposure to sunlight most of the time, even when the containers are stacked.
See the following reference images for recommendations for mounting the
Globehopper Edge in different configurations. Please check with the
manufacturer of the specific asset type onto which the Globehopper Edge is to
be mounted to get approval for the chosen mounting location. The Globehopper
Edge must never cover any text or specifications on the container.

Best Location:
The device should be mounted at least half a device length away from the right vertical pole and at least one device height away from any concealing construction element of the container to minimize shielding of the antennas. Ideally the antennas have a clear view of the sky. The solar panel being on the left-hand side.
Alternative Locations:
When the container number or other specifications are written on the preferrable mounting location, please choose the left door, upper left corner or any other locations marked as “yes” on the pictures above. Please check that the device is not mounted below the metal bars. Alternative mounting locations are numbered in priority.

8 General Recommendations about Globehopper Edge Performance
The installation location of the Globehopper Edge is very important for
achieving the best performance. The GNSS signal is very sensitive with regards
to steel obstructions; therefore, the mounting position should be chosen so
that the Globehopper Edge is not affected by such obstructions. Did you know
that GNSS satellites are circling the earth in an orbit of about 20’000 km and
their signal needs to be able to reach the Globehopper Edge? Every obstacle
will make it harder for the signal to reach the device.
Therefore, these rules should be applied to find the optimal mounting
location: The device must be mounted on a vertical flat surface. Avoid
overhanging steel structures above or below the Globehopper Edge. The top of
the Globehopper Edge should have an unobstructed view of the sky. Avoid
overhanging structures in general. Choose a place with as much sunlight as
possible and with as little exposure to brake dust as possible.
Examples of unfavorable installation locations: Shady, almost impossible to
receive direct sunlight Very low on the asset, therefore exposed to a lot of
brake dust Surrounded by steel, metal or other obstructions
